Obituary OTAGO WITNESS 26 Jun 1925, p57
A Gabriel's Gully pioneer, in the person or Mr Francis Nicoll, died at Levin on June 9, his remains being interred at Lawrence. The deceased, who was 84 years of age, arrived in the dominion in 1861. He was born in Caithness, Scotland, and on arrival in New Zealand quickly found his way to Gabriel's Gully in quest of gold. There he was joined by Messrs d. Morrison, J. Cormack, and D. M'Intosh. Mr M'Intosh is working a claim in the Blue Spur cement. When Mr Nicoll and his party were on the field, hydraulic sluicing had not been introduced, the then method of working being by tunnelling and crushing. Success having attended the efforts of the party, the partnership was dissolved but Kr Nicoll did not give up his interest in gold mining, but continued to identify himself with alluvial mining, and was a recognised authority and reported on many West Coast and other claims. Later, in partnership with his brother-in-law, he engaged in contracting, and was responsible for the construction of the Round Hill tunnel, and a large section of the railway line at Ngapara. He was also interested in anything which savoured of the sea, as was natural in the case of one born at a fishing port, and he acquired an interest in several whaling vessels, in partnership with the late Mr William Elder, then of Port Chalmers. After retiring from active participation in mining, Mr Nicoll removed to Lawrence, where he and his family resided for many years. While there, he purchased a farming property at Evans Flat, which he later disposed of and came to live in Dunedin. Subsequently he resided at Oamaru, but for the last year or two had made Levin his home. He is survived by one son (Mr G.S. Nicoll, Chief Clerk of the National Provident & Friendly Societies Department, Wellington) and four daughters - Mrs. Snow (Levin), Mrs Fowler (wife of the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes, Wellington), Mrs Houston (wife of' the office inspector of the Department of Agriculture, Wellington) and Mrs L. Deans Ritchie (Dunedin). Deceased's wife died in 1913. [JRSD, JD026]

'In 1886 the new hotel was opened, and competed with the "Caley" for the tourist and commercial traffic. At this time it passed from the hands of Mr George Leith (who succeeded his father) to that of Mr Coghill, a native of the town, recently come from the south. He died on 30 Dec 1899 in Lawrence, Central Otago, NZ. (1712)(1713) OBITUARY
Dr F. J. NICOLL, M. B., C. M., Edin.
We record with regret the death of Dr F. J. Nicoll, which occurred at his residence in Lawrence on Saturday last after a very short illness, so short, indeed, that his death may be almost pronounced to have been a sudden one. Dr Nicoll had been suffering from congestion of the lungs and thought himself so well on Saturday morning that he intended to have visited a patient of his in the vicinity of his residence. He did not however, do so, nor, indeed did he leave his house until his death, which occurred about four o'clock. When that sad event took place he was up and dressed in his bedroom and passed away surrounded by his family and friends. Dr Nicoll, who was only 34 years of age at the time of his death and therefore in the prime of his manhood, was a native of Lawrence and was educated at the District High School here, where he was, we believe, the first dux scholar, passing through all his studies creditably if not with distinction. After leaving the High School he proceeded to the Otago University, where he studied for two years, his intention being to go in for the profession of medicine. At the end of that period he went to Edinburgh where he completed his courses of study, going through his various examinations in a manner that earned him the ecomiums of some of the most distinguished professors in that ancient seat of learning. Having successfully taken his degree he proceeded to the North of England where he discharged the for some time the duties of locum tenens for a medical man at Newcastle on Tyne, eventually returning to this colony and settling down to practice in his native town. The life of a doctor in an up-country goldfields town is at the best of times is a hard one, exposed as he is in the discharge of his professional duties to the vicissitudes of a variable and trying climate at all hours of the day or night over bad roads and through rough tracts of country, and the late Dr Nicoll was a man who, under all conditions of ill-health never swerved or refused to respond to the call of duty. His death is deeply regretted throughout the district and there is the deepest sympathy felt for his respected parents, Mr and Mrs Nicoll, and for his family generally, throughout the whole of Tuapeka. The interment took place in the Lawrence cemetery on Tuesday, The Rev. Mr Will reading the funeral service.
