COMMUNITY LOSES POP

Community minded historian and music lover, Charles Edward McDonald died at Collaroy on Wednesday aged 86 years.

Mr McDonald, a former manly Daily History Columnist was born at Burwood, Victoria in 1906 and grew up in Albury where he met his wife Violet.

He moved to Gosford in 1937 to work as an ambulance officer. He began his long association with the peninsular in 1941 when he joined the historical society. His books included The Manly Warringah Story, Stories of the Peninsular and More Stories of the Peninsular.

Mr McDonald was heavily involved in the work of the DeeWhy Salvation Army and was it's first bandmaster and became it's Corps Sergeant Major. To people in the Corps he was 'POP'. He was a long time member of the Probus Club and conducted the Manly Senior Citizens Choir.

Also a family Orientated man, he had an extended family by caring for the community's less fortunate and will be missed by so many.
