Shirley Packham, Ethel's daughter, says he was a thoroughly nice guy, a shocking womaniser and binge drinker. Came home with a woman once and Ethel, a very fiery redhead, doused them both with the garden hose. Made home visits to measure and install soft furnishings and occasionally had problems with customers husbands.

She has handed me the letters and telegrams she has from time to time received from you. These as you know, reveal the history of your relationship with her over a long period. The last letter she received from you would suggest (to use a colloquial phrase) that you intend to "let her down".
It is this letter which has caused her to consult me.

Allan Halsey Winter member of firm Sullivan, Winter, solictors, Auckland. Acted in 1937 when instituted proceedings in Magistrates Court at Auckland to obtain maintenance order for herself and child of the marriage of the respondent.
Summons issued. Police unable to locate. Ascertained that L L Sowry issued proccedings for an affiliation order on behalf of a client who resided at Hawera. Warrant to Apprehend issued in that case 22/11/1937 and still gazetted ( 24/3/1942).
In November 1941 communicated with Director of NZ Military Forces but not located...

Extract from affidavit of petitioner Mrs E. M Hodder:

I was Elsie May Rhodes b. 12/8/1930. Married by Revd. Canon H Pack. After marriage lived and cohabited with my husband at Hawera and Palmerston North.
Our child Douglas Rhodes Hodder b. 20/7/1931.
On or about 1st day of July 1937 at Amesbury Street, Palmerston North.. wilfully deserted me.
..Salesman in and about Hawera.. lived together until February 1936 when we agreed to separate. Received £1-12-6 /week for maintenance compartively regularly.
Living at Amesbury Street, Palmerston North, H E Hodder left to go to Wellington and no word of whereabouts.. no support or contribution to child of marriage..
In July 1937 he showed me a letter (exhibit). He was very upset and said he was going to disappear. I reasoned with him. For the sake of our child I urged him to stay seeing the child was born during the period of our separation.

No order for maintenance was made; custody of Douglas was awarded to his mother.
