"Shipwrecks, NZ Disasters 1795-1950" has at p62:

WHITE SWAN, steamer: When on a passage from Auckland to Wellington, via Napier, the
White Swan was totally wrecked at Uruti, about 17 miles south of Castlepoint, on June 29, 1862. Her 65 passengers included His Honour Chief Justice Arney, Colonial Secretary Hon. W. Fox, three members of the Legislature, the Auckland members of Parliament, five ladies, and public servants. The steamer arrived at Napier on lane 28, and sailed at 4.30 p.m. the same day. under favourable weather conditions. Shortly after 6 o'clock the following morning those on board were alarmed by a violent shock, which was immediately followed by the alarm, "All hands on deck, the ship is sinking". An examination disclosed that one of the fore compartments was stove in and fast filling with water. The master ordered the vessel to be run ashore, and within a quarter of an hour of striking the White Swan was beached, stem on, about 100 yards from the shore. After some delay, the boats were launched, and, a good landing place being available, passengers, crew, mails and a greater part of the luggage were all safely landed. Handsome rewards were offered for the recovery of 12 cases of public documents, but despite willing efforts the cases proved to be too heavy to handle. Subsequently, two cases were washed up on the beach. By II a.m. the sea was making a clean breach over the vessel. On the night of the 29th the wind blew heavily, and on the following morning nothing but the bowsprit of the steamer was visible, the hull being embedded in the sand and her masts and funnel gone by the board. Passengers and crew embarked on the steamer Storm Bird on July 2, and arrived at Wellington the following more morning.
At the Nautical Inquiry into the loss of the White Swan the Court consisted principally of Officers from H.M.S. Harrier. the second-lieutenant acting as President. The finding was not made public.
The White Swan, No. 31,638, was a screw steamer of 335 tons register, built at Glasgow. Scotland, in 1854. Her engines were of 72 h.p. The steamer was commanded by Captain Allen Harper.
