He was married to Joy Heather PAUL on 5 Jun 1950.⁽⁹⁶¹⁾ Joy Paul was born in Wellington but lived at York Road (Midhurst) until Frederick Hammond died when family moved to a farm at Bell Block. Attended local school and New Plymouth Girls High to 6th form. Then at 17 worked as an assistant secretary for businessman Percy Stanton. Left to marry. Lived firstly then at Mangorei where husband, Denis, was cream grader at local factory. After second child moved to Bell Block house built beside parents (Mary & Percy). Denis then had poultry for two years and then became an insurance consultant. Joy was secretary to local school for 5½ years when Nick was five. Boys eventually attended NP Boys High School and Joy was asst Secretary at Boys High for 9 years. Then moved on to Psych Service and worked there 10½ years as Secretary before retiring to home, garden, music & pottery. Christopher passed UE and joined Housing Corp. Jonathon went to Lincoln and was Meat Inspector at Waitara.and Nicholas went to Massey Uni . Once Nick went to Massey Joy & Denis left Bell Block after Mary died & in 1977 settled at 213 Junction Road. The Junction Road house was relocated by Joy & Denis onto a basement. Denis then operated his own Tax Consultancy business from 1978 The ensuing years have been spent restructuring a large garden on the 1½ ha. property. After Denis retired, being a keen hunter, he spends his time gardening and hunting and is presently (Dec '98) Grey Power President & NP Organiser. Both Joy & Denis are committee members of Friends of Pukekura Park. ENG.⁽¹⁹⁸⁾ He was a Hotel manager in 1891 in Cullensville.⁽⁹⁶⁹⁾ It seems like Wises might be a bit behind or else Fred stayed at Cullenville for a while possibly managing the Miners Arms for the new owners, the Mahers w ho may be related to his wife Elizabeth by marriage into the Cameron family. He was a Dairy farmer in 1901 in Kawatau.⁽⁹⁶⁹⁾ He died on 14 May 1933.⁽⁹⁷⁰⁾ He was buried in Mount View, Marton NZL.⁽⁹⁷¹⁾ Mount View cemetery, on main State Highway 1, by Porewa:

Got "Dickson money" according to Eliza Dickson (Janice) but Elizabeth went bankrupt in 1889 and he took on responsibility of maintaining her 8 children by John Dickson.
A lot of Hammonds at Ohingaiti: [NZSocGen MI F:K03.19] also Taihape, Mangaweka & Marton.

Report from Maureen Keith that FWH was later a contractor at Marton.
The Marton connection is reinforced by the fact that they went to the area after leaving the South Island and by choosing to be buried there. There are many Hammonds living around Marton. Also they were living later at York Road Midhurst. Is this a coincidence or a reference to the past. Mathew Hammond and his brother Richard owned 'York Farm' at Onepuhi in the 1860's, itself a reference to their origins in York, England. [TOTR]
Wises 1883-84, 85-86 has several Hammond in Blenheim area, some living at Renwick, just over the Wairau River from the entrance to the Kaituna Valley; viz: David, Francis, Henry, W., See also The Cyclopedia of NZ vol 5, p365 for Hammonds at Wairau. Many also in the Marton area. Varied occupations throughout NZ but many listings for farmers with several butchers. Included in 1891-92 listing: John Hammond at Broadway Marton. Will Dickson, was later to become a butcher at Marton, perhaps John was influential. Another interesting entry is for F. W. Hammond at Halcombe in 1895 where Don Dickson, then 10, his future wife, Eliza Nielsen, was to come from. The entry is not there in Wises for 1896. 1901 has Frederick W., dairy farm, Kawatau.
"he did a bit of mining too; Iv'e got the nugget he had made (into earings) for gran". Chistopher, Halls odest son, has the gold scales. [JH] Parents: Thomas HAMMOND and Mary Ann .

He was married to Elizabeth CAMERON (Lizzie) in 1887.⁽⁹⁷²⁾⁽⁹⁷³⁾ About Sept 1889: bankrupted Elizabeth left Cullensville. Major flood halted mining and investments went sour. Had built up considerable debt in running Miners' Arms which she admitted to as Fred Hammond had kept his accounts in order. Hotel taken over on Sept 1889 by Patrick & Mary Maher.
Dec 24th 1889: Mary born.
Winter 1890: large slip covered the Elizabeth claim, formerly owned by Mrs Dickson. [GIATD vol 2]

1893-1894: FW Hammond managing Pelorus Hotel. FWH had also managed the Masonic Hotel at Havelock. [GIATD vol1]
Family moved to North Island when son, Will, aged 10 ( i.e. 1887) according to his obituary in 1950.

1889 must have been a difficult year as Mary Hammond was also born the same year. Birth regd at Palm North under Dickson name and re-registered a little later. Fred probably had to stay behind as he was shown managing hotels later at Havelock. Elizabeth may have come north to be with Cameron family at that time.
