The death occurred at Taihape recently of Mr. William Osmond Lawrence Gardner age 75 a former employee of the Taihape Borough Council. The late Mr. Gardner was born in Guernsey (Chanel Islands) and came to Taihape about the year 1902 & was associated with his brother-in-law Mr. W Hodder who was then in posession of a farm property at presently occupied by Mr EW Spooner & conducted a milk delivery service in Taihape. Subsequently Mr Gardner joined the the Public Works Dept. and was engaged on the construction of the main trunk railway, being leading hand of the ballast gang working from Waiouru to the completion of the line to Pokaka. Mr Gardner eventually left the railway service to take employment with local carrriers. Amongst his employers were Mr Riodan, Messrs Franslow & Wright & Thompson & BOwater. Mr Gardner the joined the staff of the Taihape Borough Council and reamined with that local body until his retirement. His mother was Mrs Mahoney whom, early settlers will recall, used to conduct a maternity hospital in Carver Street, Taihape. Deceased was in London immediately before he came to New Zealand with his parents at an early age. His father died a few years after arriving in New Zealand. A sister of Mr Gardner lives in Hamilton.

He died on 19 Jun 1954 in Taihape, New Zealand.⁽⁹⁰⁹⁾ He was buried in Taihape.⁽⁹¹⁰⁾ William Gardner, 1879-1954; and his beloved Margaret Gardner, 1886-1963.
