Plot 14, XVI Pres. Wises 1902 shows a Roderick Dickson, farmer at Hawainga. This probably is Hawaega Village Settlement by the Kawatau Improved Farm Settlement (opened up in 1894) [ER]
{The Land Act, 1892, governed such settlements and other schemes. A rental was payable and work had to commence within 1-4 years and to be continuous for a minimum of 6 years with improvements required to the value of 20% of the value of the land within the first two years.[YB]}

Ian remembers, when 12 or 13, grandfather, Rod, and John Moir Dickson's pistol: "better go and see if it work". He fired it under the Mangaweka bridge; very frightening. [ID] Parents: John Moir DICKSON and Elizabeth CAMERON (Lizzie).

He was married to Rubina Maud BOWIE (Ruby) about 1907. (706) Family lost father and she, the mother re-married. .. .. (?) sort of farming in the South Island. By the time he sold up had quite a bit of money. He, (Pop), never had much time for old (step father) Hammond. Believed he only married her to get what money she had. {Her bankruptcy seems to have been hidden from the family [KAOB]}.
When he came over, (from Blenheim, Colin was) about eight before came up in Rangitikie. Rod, five years any sort of work that could be done. At 14-16 out cutting. He (Rod) had a block of 200 acres and when old grandfather sold out he sold dad's 200 acres at the same time. He took dad's £80 too and took off then to Taranaki. He went to Stratford and bought some cow country. He (Rod) went up up Kawhatau. None wanted that. Was able to buy all 100 acres and turn it into just a cow farm. In the Kawahatau Dad and Bill went and dropped. A lot of good people.. sick. Might have been 600 acres cleared. Dad better, and able to buy another place took his money and went to Pio Pio. We didn't go there with him.
Up at Pio Pio on the Government land; 200 acres cost £500. Spent over three months in the winter. Found it was "sleepy sick"; ( Rod) just took off. Something lacking in the ground after 12 months (sheep) just start to fade away. came back to house. Just started working. Farm Manager. (Farm) belonged to a woman, looked after till son came back from war. Pop he was looking after the place; ladies son lost in war, 1914-18, 600-700 acres
Came to the village, (Mangaweka) when Colin only three. Living two miles from the village. Mel born at house. Frogs in the sheep dip near the wood. Bad tempered at that time: told us don't you go near that dip. Pop came down running with his stockwhip, chased Ian around the paddock before he caught him. Quite happy there catching frogs; I was three.

'Dad, (Rod) was a drover'. Did have good dogs. You've got have that; b. of a dog could let you down. Worked all around the place. Took cattle to Wanganui, 60 miles , with Colin and returned same day. Good horse could do 5 miles an hour.

White Wings has an unconfirmed report:
1868 "Henry Miller", 433 ton. Captain Dickson sailed June 22nd arrived October 20th. On September 8th when off Mauritius a terrific gale with huge seas was encountered and 30 tons of cargo were jettisoned, the vessel labouring heavily and shipping heavy seas.

OBITUARY.
MR. WILLIAM DICKSON.
The death occurred in Marton early last Friday morning of Mr. William Dickson, in his 74th. year.
The late Mr. Dickson was the eldest son of Mr. John William Dickson, of Blenheim. Born at Wairau, Mr. Dickson came to the North Island at the age of 10 and worked In the Mangaweka, Hunterville and Halcombe. districts before returning to his home town where he married Miss Maude Player and then returned to the North Island. For some years he was engaged in the butchery trade in Patea and then came to Marton in 1901 to carry on his trade for W. Manning and Company, Head Bros. and W. Read after which he carried on in a butchery business on his own account
After selling this business, Mr. Dickson took up droving, where he was a notable personality throughout the Rangitikei and surrounding districts. He later started business as a general carrier in Marton but owing to ill-health had to relinquish this business and lived a semi-retired life until about two years ago when his health further deteriorated and he was forced to give up work altogether. Since then he has been practically confined to his bed.
The high esteem in which the late Mr. Dickson was held was evident by the large number of floral wreaths and messages of sympathy received by his family, and also the large gathering of his many friends who, followed the cortege to the Mt. View cemetery last Sunday afternoon to pay their last respects to a prominent citizen.
The late Mr. Dickson was predeceased by his wife 20 years ago, and he Is survived by a family of four- one son, Mr. J. Dickson (Marton), and three daughters, Mesdames G. R Dallas and J. A. Fitzsimmons (Marton, and Mrs. J. Pedley (Wanganul).
