William Henry DAVEY⁽⁵³²⁾ was a Gentleman (formerly miner).⁽³²⁷⁾ From same family as Sir Humphrey Davey of Penzance in Cornwall He was also known as Henry.⁽⁵³³⁾ Syd records they lived at Adelaide.Bill Symonds reports that Kapunda where family born is 100km north of Adelaide, It was an early copper mining town in what they called the "copper triangle", consisting of Wallaroo-Moonta, Burra and Kapunda. There was also a William Henry Davey married to a Mary Jane Smith at the Moonta mines.
It is probable that ther were two William Henry Davies and Mary Ann's father was known as Henry. Parents: John ? DAVEY and Unkn DAVEYSP.

I have had a good look at the extracts from the SOM PRO and the pages from
Social History of Curry Rivel that Pat sent.

It has been clear that there were two Marys, the question is to whom did
they belong. The Mary that married John VAGG called one of her children
George Tilley VAGG and George TILLEY b. 1857 who married
Francis/Fanny/Frances DAVIDGE is almost certainly her father. I am sure
that, that Mary did not marry a HODDER.

I am researching the TILLEY surname from the area immediately east of
Taunton which includes Curry-Rivel, Fivehead, Isles Abbotts, Coombe St.
Nicholas, and Hambridge. I have come across those Tilley's you mention
in those parish records. I got the parish and census records of
1841-51-61 from the FHC of the LDS.
I have yet to connect George Tilley and Mary Tilley to my line. I
believe that George is probably a son or possibly a brother of my
Thomas Tilley and Elizabeth ??? . There are records of Tilleys in
Curry-Rivel and Isles Abbotts as early as the 1500's.

My interests in the Tilley name include:-

marriage between George Tilley and Fanny Davidge and a part copy of
"A Social History of Curry Rivel in the Nineteenth Century" which has
information on the Tilley Family.
I use a program called Family Scrap Book, which handles GEDCOM files
and normally use Wordperfect for text files (however I can read Word
files also). I have been corresponding with Patrick Tilley.
Most of my information has come from other peoples information and
this is a problem as there appears to be some errors somewhere.
Most of the information came from a C.M VAGG who was a descendant
from George Tilly VAGG a son of John Vagg and Mary TILLEY who also came
to Australia. I was aware that there was also a clash of information
as I had a copy of a Descendancy Chart from the "Ancesteral File" which
said that Mary TILLEY m William HODDER and tried to follow it up with
the submitter who lives in South Australia. I spoke to him on the
telephone and although he was sure of his information down from James
Samual TILLEY, he said that the information above was suspect/incorrect.

Davidge is not an uncommon name in SOM. My knowledge pre the arrival of
John DAVIDGE in Bristol c. 1820 is sketchy. His father was William DAVIDGE,
servant, who was in Frome in 1780 when John was born. William is not in
the Frome Parish Registers but there were a couple of DAVIDGE families
in the area at that time. (Frome seems to be about 30m. away from
Langport or a days horse ride.)

He died after 1878. He was a Shoemaker, Policeman & Baptist Missionary.
He was married to Martha DOUGLAS on 30 Nov 1856 in Bristol Registry Office.

1851 census at Sion Row with mother & step-father, 13,. John DAVIDGE and

Thanks Kevin for sending on your information. Henry Vagg was my
ggg grandfather, a carpenter, who apparently came up from
Somersset to make his way in London, where he married and had
six kids.

One of them, Mary Ann married my gg grandfather, Richard
Hurst and may have been instrumental in his becoming a
successful timber merchant when the silk trade collapsed in
London.

Incidentally you of course know of Mervyn Vagg, author of the
Vagg Odyssey. I just heard that he intended before his death
passing on his records to a cousin who was one of the Tilley
Vaggs.

I enclose a register printout of my Vaggs in case they are ever
of use to you.

I've been given your email address by Patrick Tilley. He said that you
had been researching the Vagg family of Somerset. I am related to the South
Petherton side of this family.My great*3 grandmother was Annice Vagg who was
born in South Petherton in 1821. I can trace her ancestry back to Richard
Vagg of South Petherton through the line as shown in the attached text file.

I would be very grateful for any information you could give me to do with
this family. I am also trying to trace a copy of a book called "The Vagg
Odyssey: A thousand years of the Vaggs" I know that it was published in
Australia by C. Mervyn Vagg but have as yet been unable to find a copy.

Any assistance on either of these matters would be much appreciated.

fishmonger at 1 Charlton Rd, Hotwells, Bristol.
In 1881 was shown as living in Clifton, Bristol and was working as a Railway Clerk.
