Yetman and related families of Newfoundland

Notes

Jacob or James BRIFFETT

I am assuming that Jacob Briffett was born in Bryant's Cove since two older siblings were born there, he died there and his father died there or in Harbour Grace. He was buried in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery (Roman Catholic) age 73 in 1933.

Jacob (also listed as Jake and James) was a fisherman. He converted to Catholicism at the age of 63 (May 20, 1919). He was maried to Bridget Duggan on June 24, 1886 in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, Canada in the Methodist Church by Joseph Lister. The witnesses to the wedding were Adrial R. and Mary J. Hurlihy.

Most of the information obtained about Jacob was taken from the Provincial Archives, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

According to the Provincial Archives, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, Jacob was 22 at the time of his marriage to Bridget Duggan 24 January 1886 which would make his date of birth 1864.

Involved in Catholic/Protestant confrontation in Bryant's cove in 1883.

1904 McAlpine's Directory, Jacob Briffett of Eliel, fisherman

1921 Census -- "Jacob Briffett -- Bryant's Cove -- head -- married, born Aug 1858, 62 years of age, born Bryant's Cove, English, Roman Catholic, fisherman in cod fishery -- works on own -- also small farming.

According to family tradition, Jacob was a handsome man with a big moustache that curled at the ends.

Bridget DUGGAN

I am guessing Bridget Duggan's year of birth since the information I was given says she was 76 at the time of her death. Bridget is listed as having the occupation of "domestic." Information listed came from the Provincial Archives, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Her parents are listed as being Edward Duggan and Sarah Dunn.

According to the Provincial Archives, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, Bridget was 23 at the time of her marriage to Jacob Briffett 24 January 1886. This would make her year of birth 1862.

1921 Census -- Harbour Grace -- Upper Island Cove to Feather Point: "Bridget Briffett -- Bryant's Cove -- wife, married, born Mar. 1858 -- 63 years old, born Bryant's Cove -- English, Roman Catholic."

1935 Census -- same area as 1921 census: Bridget Briffett -- mother, widow, 75 years, parents of Nfld, homemaker.

Years of birth from above sources: Death 1862, Marriage 1862, 1921 Census 1858, 1935 Census 1860.

Thomas BRIFFETT

Thomas never married. According to the "Descendants of Lyle Briffett" sheet (p. 2), given to
me by John Briffett of California (no relation), Thomas died at the age of 26 in 31 Mar 1914 while on a sealing ship, the SS Southern Cross.

Thomas was baptised by a Rev. A. McDonald. I do not know if this occurred at Immaculate Conception -- the Roman Catholic church in Harbour Grace or not. I am assuming so as all of the other children in the family were baptised there. Information on birth and baptism from Provincia Archives, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

Thomas died on "The Southern Cross" which was lost with all hands. I have in my possession a book entitled "Death on the Ice: The Great Newfoundland Sealing Disaster of 1914" by Cassie Brown. It has a picture of the Southern Cross and some information about its loss. [JYB]

Jacob BRIFFETT

Jacob was baptised by J. March at Immaculate Conception Church (Roman Catholic). His godparents were P. Hunt and Catherine Duggan. Birth and baptismal information taken from Provincial Archives, St. Johhn's Newfoundland, Canada.

Kathleen BRIFFETT

According to my second cousin (David Briffett of Verdun, Quebec, Canada), Kathleen died 20 May 1959. According to the information given to me by John Briffett (of California, no relation), Kathleen died 20 May 1964.

Kathleen did not have any children but she adopted her sister's (Maria Beatrice) daughter Marie after Maria Beatrice's death.

I am guessing at Kathleen's birthdate by putting it at two years after her previous brother's birth (Francis). I am also assuming she was born in Bryant's Cove as all of the other children in the family were.

She was also known as Kitty - first name could have been Catherine.

From Harbour Grace Standard 14 Sep 1928 (email from Sue O'Neil, 19 Apr 2000), Mrs. J.D. Donavan and little daughter Marie of Boston visiting her parents M/M Jacob Briffett of Bryant's Cove. During the past summer M/M Briffett were also visited by their son Edward (Rin 68) (and his little) [sic] from Sydney, C.B. where he has been residing for the past 9 years.

Joseph F. YETMAN

Uncle Joe and Aunt Pauline did not have any children.

Pauline Mary MARRIE

Aunt Pauline gave me the information about her birth and marriage.

Aunt Pauline died of cancer. She and my Uncle Joe were married later in life.
I believe she was about 40 and had originaly planned to be a Catholic nun. She
was in the nunnery but came out to look after her younger brothers and sisters
after her mother died. She had at least two miscarriages and never had a live
birth nor did Uncle Joe and Aunt Pauline adopt any children.

Mary YETMAN

Yetman.

Vol 45B
Abode: "of Harbour Grace" at time of marriage

Clement YETMAN

Clement Yetman added to the family of Joshua Yetman and Caroline Hutchings based on the naming of Joshua [albeit Chipman] on the marriage record of Clement Yetman [Chitman] and Harriet Butt, and this Joshua being the only Joshua Yetman found born about the right time to be Clement's father. Clement's birth date as given in the 1921 Census is is only eight months after the birth date of the previous sibling. But his birth year is listed differently in every record found for him. At the time of his marriage to Harriet in 1888 he is listed as age 26, making him born in 1862. In the 1921 Census he is listed as being born in May 1867, but being age 64 which would make him born in 1857, obviously one is in error. In his obituary in 1927 he is listed as age 75, making him born in 1852. To add to the confusion, when he is married to Georgina Lundrigan he is listed as Clarence Yetman, son of Joshua Yetman, age 26 in 1884, making a birth year of 1858. But in the christening of their child Elfrida he is listed as Clement Yetman.
1921 Census - St. John's West; age listed as 64 at time of census. Street address listed as: St. John's West Ward 2 Patrick Street; Belonged to the Church of England; Profession: Laborer

St. John's - St. Mary's Church of England - Parish Records; Marriages: 1917 - 1923, Box 2
Newfoundland Provincial Archives; Occupation: Agent.

The Daily News, St. John's P. 10 -- 27 December 1927:
Passed peacefully away on December 26th, Clement Yetman, aged 75 after a long illness, leaving a wife, three sons, two brothers, three sisters, and a large circle of friends to mourn his sad loss. Funeral takes place from his late residence, 394 Water Street at 5:30 PM Tuesday , to the railway station.

As of 1927 he still had 3 living children and 5 living siblings (maybe others who preceeded him in death?)

McAlpine's 1904 Directory, Tilton; Clement (of Josh.) laborer [Also William, of Joshua, fisherman].

McAlpine's 1908 Directory, P 532; Clement Yetman (Occupation - furniture) living in Harbour Grace.

Apparently Clement and Harriet had not yet moved to St. John's from the Harbour Grace area. Oldest son (William) was born in Spaniard's Bay and the other three were born in Tilton. Therefore, marriage must have taken place in that area as well, probably in the Church of England.

Bay Roberts -- Tilton and Spaniard's Bay -- Church of England; Vol. 41; Baptisms: 1860 - 1891
Marriages: 1860 - 1891. Lists Clement as a fisherman on his son William's birth/baptism entry.

Marriage record is found there: Lists Clement as being "of Tilton" and Harriett as "of Spaniard's Bay."

Tilton - Spaniard's Bay - vital Statistics; Baptisms: 1860 - 1891, Vol. 41; Church of England - Spaniard's Bay - Harbour Grace, Fisherman

Marriage took place in Spaniard's Bay; Living in Tilton at time of marriage; 26 at time of marriage; Fisherman

Although Clement is listed as a bachelor at the time of his marriage to Harriett Butt, it seems evident that he is the same Clement Yetman who was married to Georgina Lundrigan and had a child Elfrida. Since both Georgina and Elfrida had died, this may have been a simple error in the records.

Georgina LUNDRIGAN

Tilton - Spaniard's Bay - Vital Statistics

Church of England - Spaniard's Bay - Harbour Grace

Mark YETMAN

Information taken from headstone in cemetery in Harbour Grace. Mark was 80 at the time of his death.

1921 Census - Harbour Grace District, Newfoundland, Canada; Upper Island Cove - Feather Point; Mark was living with his wife, Eliza J. (as she was listed in this record) and their 5 children in Bryant's Cove. Age: 54; Religion: Church of England; Nationality: English

There may be older children, as only these five named in the 1921 Census, but there is a five-year gap after their marriage before Alexander's birth.

Second wife said to be a Harriet, and possibly the Harriet (Butt) first married to Clement Yetman. But is not the Mark age 79 in 1921 Census with wife Harriet. There are two Mark Yetmans in the 1921 Census, one with Eliza Jane and their five children, he aged 54, and one with wife Harriet (possibly the one married to Clement Yetman) he aged 79.

Delayed birth registrations 1840 - 1915; s/o John & Susanna Yetman, fisherman, Dated 19 Jan 1927.

Marriage, age 25, fisherman, son of John Yetman; witnesses Nathanuel Yetman, Julia Crane.

Harriet Sophia BUTT

Death date is approximate and place of death is believed to have been St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada but that is not certain.

1921 Census - St John's West. Age listed as 50 at time of census; Address listed as: St John's West Ward, 2 Patrick Street.

Valerie Simms (nee Yetman, cousin of Jennifer Yetman Bell) supplied information that Harriette's last name was Butt. Valerie also said that Harriett's second husband was a Mark Yetman.

Death date found in newspaper. Living with "Clem" -- "Uncle Bob's son" (according to Val Simms) on Craig Ave. at time of her death. (January 1999)

Bay Roberts -- Tilton and Spaniard's Bay -- Church of England; Vol. 41; Baptisms: 1860 -- 1891
Marriages: 1860 -- 1891

Harriett was married twice -- both times to a YETMAN. Her second marriage was to Mark YETMAN (I believe he was my Mother's uncle). She lived in Bryant's Cove with Mark. Later in life, after Clement's death, she lived with my great uncle Bob. After her marriage to Clement, she lived in Tilton and had a store there. Information provided by Val (nee Yetman) Simms, my cousin -- 4 Feb 1999. The second husband probably the Mark Yetman first married to Elizabeth Jane Noseworthy.

John BUTT

Extensive research on the Vokey and Butt families by Grace Collins resulted in her conclusion that the John Butt who married Jane Walker was the son of Moses Butt and Keziah Vokey. Not the John Butt son of John and Margaret chr 1839.

Jane WALKER

Possibly the Jane Butt died 27 Jul 1874 in Spaniard's Bay. -- According to Grace Collins, this was the same Jane Butt.

??Could be the Jane Walker chr 10 Jul 1836 at St. John the Baptist, St. John's, d/o Thomas Walker and Anne Pippy (first married to John Yow.

Virtue BUTT

According to my Aunt Julia, Isabella Noseworthy was first married to my grandfather's brother (Thomas Yetman) and had one child with him before he died. Later she married my grandmother's brother (Edward Briffett) and had 11 children with him.
