BOOK STATUS:

POLK COUNTY HISTORY BOOK HAS ARRIVED
At long last the Polk County History book is finished and has arrived at the Polk County Genealogical Society Library in Bolivar, MO. A big thank-you to everyone for your patience in this undertaking. Bunny Jones, chairman of the project says, "We started this book project in March of 2002 knowing that it would be a two to five year project, hoping that it would be closer to the two-year mark. We feel that we are pretty well on target." Jones says that the process of creating a book of this magnitude was a very time-consuming chore. Jones says that until she had purchased these books from other counties and started the monumental task of helping produce this one, even she did not realize what all was involved. There were over 700 family histories written by Polk Countians and their families. There is also a section of county history that will walk us through the years of Polk County since its inception in 1835. It is the first book of its kind for Polk County in 114 years and is well worth the wait.

If you would like to purchase a book, you may still do so for a very short period of time. You can make your check payable to Polk County History Book and mail it to PCGS at PO Box 632, Bolivar, MO 65613. The price is $68.00 plus $6.00 shipping if you need to have your book shipped. For further questions call 417-777-2820.

Sample Biography by Linda Crawford

John Quincy Breshears was born 16 March 1793 in South Carolina. His parents were Henry Breshears and Eleanor Hardin. John married Naomi Ann "Oma" Hogg in Lawrence County, Tennessee on 1 March 1821. Naomi was the daughter of Reuben Hogg and Mary Wisdom. She was born in Lexington, Kentucky on 17 June 1804.
John and Naomi moved from Tennessee to Polk County, Missouri by 1840 as they were enumerated on that census for the county. John is not listed on the 1837 Polk County tax list. John and Naomi were the parents of 17 children. They were Mary, Henry Hardin, Reuben Dobbin, William Arthur, Sarah P., Jesse Carroll, Susan, Nancy G., John W., Margaret "Peggy," Joseph W., Ozais Martin "Mark," James Knox Polk, Thomas Hart Benton, Andrew Jackson and two who died in infancy. John and Naomi are buried in Breshears Cemetery in northeast Polk County.
Jesse Carroll Breshears was born 17 December 1830 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. On 1 February 1855 he married Rhoda Catherine Jump who was born on 22 December 1836 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Rhoda was the daughter of James Jump and Eulila Palmer who moved to Polk County about 1838. In addition to Rhoda they were the parents of Peter, William Kincaid, Lucinda, Joseph Henry, and James Knox Polk Jump. James and Eulila are buried in Lindley Creek Cemetery in northeast Polk County.
Jesse and Rhoda Breshears were the parents of James Knox Polk, John Henry, Naomi Elizabeth, Joseph Carroll, Sophronia Angeline, Mary Lucinda, George Washington, Missouri Bell, Jesse Simon, Matoke Erickson and Lewis Hardin. Mary Lucinda married Charles Leslie Gladden. Leslie and Mary were the parents of Florence Elnora "Nora" and Pelura Elizabeth "Lura." Nora was just three years old when her father died. It was decided that Mary and her two daughters would live with her parents Jesse and Rhoda. By this time Grandpa John Breshears had died and Grandma Naomi was living with Jesse and Rhoda in their home also. Nora told how she could remember her Great Grandmother Naomi sitting in a chair piecing quilts or doing the mending. She cut threads with a small pocket knife. That knife was given to Nora after Naomi died. Larry Fowler, son of Carl and Minnie McGee Fowler and grandson of W.K. and Nora McGee is now in possession of the knife. The tips are broken off both blades. Larry is the brother of Linda Fowler Crawford. Along with Sandra and Brenda they are the children of Carl and Minnie McGee Fowler who spent their last few years living at Pleasant Hope in Polk County. Linda and her husband Jack Crawford have lived in Polk County since 1961. Their daughters Julie Graves and Jeannie Cook grew up in Polk County and attended school in Pleasant Hope as did the sons of Ray and Julie Graves. They are Matthew and Andrew Graves.
Beginning with John and Naomi and ending with Matthew and Andrew all eight generations have lived all or part of their lives in Polk County, Missouri.
