(William 'Billy' Sutherland is #1526.) William was born 25 March
1822. William was the son of Daniel Sutherland and Phoebe Fuller.
William died 3 June 1909 at 87 years of age. William made many trips
into the Sandy Basin to visit and hunt with relatives. He liked the
country, and he liked even better the opportunities of indulging in the
excitement of the chase after bear, deer, wolves and other wild animals
that filled its forests. Having resolved to make it his home, he
build a pole cabin on land belonging to his brother, James, cleared a small
field and put out a crop in the spring of 1846. In a few months he carrried
his young wife and their first-born, Jasper, out along the wilderness bridle-path,
up Dumps Creek, across green-clad Sandy Ridge, down the torturous twistings
of Frying Pan Creek, and finally finished the 15-mile trip by climbing
a steep, new path one mile to his little log cabin sitting bravely in the
shelter of a highland vale. (In 1930, Jasper recalled that they lived
there until he was five or six years old.) His brother, James, and
a cousin, Abednigo Kiser, were his nearest neighbors - each a mile away.
The next nearest neighbor was at Sandlick, seven miles away.
Both are buried in the family cemetary established
by them on a beautiful knoll about a quarter of a mile from their home.
Without moving his home site, William had lived in three different counties
- Russell, 1846-58; Buchanan, 1858-80; and Dickenson, 1880-1909.
In recognition for his services, his poitrait hangs in the Dickenson County

February 1828. Elijah died 18 October 1907 at 79 years of age.
He married CATHERINE 'KATY' RASNICK
23 November 1848. (Catherine 'Katy' Rasnick is #1529.) Catherine
was born 24 April 1832. Catherine was the daughter of Jonas Rasnake
and Rachel Laforce. Catherine died 24 December 1910 at 78 years of
age. They lived a few years at Cleveland, Va; a year at the home
of his sister, Sylvia (d-130); and a year in a hunter’s cabin at the mouth
of Josh’s Branch of Lick Creek before erecting a hewn log house about a
mile downstream in 1854. This became their permanent home.
It is said the neighbors were invited to a house-raising and that the walls
of Elijah’s house and those of his brother Noah (D-133), some two miles
down stream, were both raised on the same day. The land on which
the house was built was conveyed to him by his father in 1873. The
same year he also purchased an adjoining tract of 670 acres from Dale Carter
which, with his 200 adjoining acres purchased from Warders in 1860, gave
him a total of 1270 acres - later surveyed to be in reality 2500 acres.
While much of his early life was spent hunting deer, bear, wolves, turkey
and other wild game in this wilderness, he and his children also cleared
many acres for farming.
As his lick Creek home was located consecutively
in three counties, Elijah served as Overseer of the Poor, Russell County,
1852-58; Census Enumerator, Buchanan County, 1860; first Clerk of Sandlick
District School Board, 1870; first Overseer of the Poor, Dickenson County.
Because of physical disabilities, he was exempted from military service
during the Civil War. He tried to remain neutral but suffered some
harassment. Being better educated than most of his neighbors, he was persuaded
to teach a term or two of school after the war. He donated the hunter’s
cabin on Josh’s Branch for the school house.
Church records show Katy transferred her membership
by letter from Reeds Valley Baptist Church to Sandlick Primitive Baptist
Church in November 1866; was dismissed by letter in 1881. In 1874, Elijah
became a member of Reeds Valley Primitive Baptist Church. He later
moved his membership to Sulphur Spring Church. Licensed to preach
on June 1, 1875, he pastored several churches during his 32 year in the
ministry. At the first meeting of the Washington District Primitive
Baptist Association after his death, his obituary (written by William B.
Sutherland, E-646, son of his sister Sylvia) was ordered published. It
stated:
"A firmer man never lived ... Opposed to the
introduction of new things amongst the Baptists ... Brother Counts traveled
many miles through wet and dry, heat and cold, preaching the glad tidings
of great joy, and in his latter days was undoubtedly possessed with brighter
views and revelation. He was entertaining and instructive in his
conversation. He seemed to be greatly impressed in teaching the practical
duties of the church and the discriminating laws of Zion and in unfolding
the glorious mysteries of the oracles of God’s Word to the edification
of the Saints and the feeding of both the sheep and the lambs. The
doctrine ... was not his own, but His who sent him. He sought not
to please men, thereby proving to be a servant of God, ever standing firm
upon the walls of Zion and preaching salvation by grace through Christ,
and that grace given in Christ before the world began. We traveled
with him much amongst the churches and to associations and, the more we
traveled together, the better we loved him. He was honored and esteemed
by all sound Primitive Baptists."
Late in life, Elijah thought more and more
about his maternal grandfather, Abednego Kiser, who had died in the service
of his country before the age of 30, and was buried at Norfolk. In 1907,
Elder Counts decided to travel to Norfolk to see the Jamestown Exposition
and to search for the grave of his grandfather. On 6 Oct. 1907, he
rode horseback the 20 miles to the nearest railroad station at Cleveland,
expecting to take the eastbound train the next morning. He spent
the night with relatives, but morning found him too ill to travel.
Lingering until the 16th, he quietly passed away near the place of his
birth and was buried in his father’s graveyard. For a more complete
sketch of the life of Elijah Shelby Counts, see "Some Sandy Basin Characters"
by Elihu Jasper Sutherland, pages 67-89. From E. J. Sutherland's
Some Descendants of John Counts of Glade Hollow, COUNTS D131 pg. 221

Abednego3, Joseph Keyser2, Charles1 Keyser) (#1532) was born 26 April 1831.
Noah died 1 December 1898 at 67 years of age.
He married AILY AMBURGEY in Dickenson
Co, Va, 10 March 1853. (Aily Amburgey is #1539.) Aily was born
12 February 1832. Aily was the daughter of John Amburgey Jr and Aily
Grizzel. Aily died 7 December 1918 at 86 years of age. They
lived with his father until 1855 when he brought his wife and first child
to Lick Creek near the mouth of Dog Branch, downstream from the home of
his older brother, Elijah, 8.2.2.b (COUNTS D-131). Here in the wilderness,
with the help of neighbors, mostly kinfolk, their log house had been raised
in 1854. His pioneer life was similar to that of his brother-in-law,
William Sutherland, 8.2.2.a (COUNTS D-130), except that he was farther
from the mills and stores of the Clinch settlements.
At the 1964 Counts Reunion, Hoge Sutherland
(F-1475) told this panther tale which had been handed down to him by his
mother, the oldest child of Noah. Soon after the family moved into
the new house, Noah returned to the Clinch for urgently needed supplies.
A coverlet hung over the opening for the front door of the unfinished house.
Late in the afternoon, Aily went to milk. Baby Isabelle started crying
up a storm in the house. A panther heard the noise and decided to investigate
- giving a scream as he passed the gap above the barn. Racing to
the house ahead of the panther, Aily could not bolt a door she did not
have. Standing outside the doorway, the baby yelling within, the
black panther advancing without, she recalled hunters’ tales that a panther
is a cowardly animal and, when not cornered, will not attack a human who
shows no fear. Mother instinct gave her courage to jump in the air,
scream and shake her apron at the animal. It backed off and ran into the
woods.
Noah cleared land for farming. As there
was much wild game, he became a noted hunter. Their home, being between
the county seats of Buchanan and Dickenson counties, was a favorite stopping
place for traveling lawyers and litigants, as well as for hunters from
a distance.
He was a Democrat prior to the Readjuster
regime in Virginia when he followed General Mahone and Governor Cameron
into the Readjuster Party and then went with Mahone and others into the
Republican ranks. During the gubernatorial campaign of 1881, he entertained
overnight William E. Cameron, Readjuster candidate for Governor, and his
party of stump speakers going from Grundy to Gladeville (Wise). Noah
enjoyed arguing with the lawyers and stump speakers. He was a great
talker and one campaigner commented that, if Mr. Counts had been educated,
he would have been a great stump speaker. His son, John, 8.2.2.d.4
(COUNTS E-675), stated that Noah "had a strong voice and good delivery
and more common horse sense than all his boys ever had."
During the Civil War, Noah served as Lieutenant
of Co E, 21st Va Cav, CSA (Confederate States of America) (See E-638).
He was a strong advocate for the formation of Dickenson County. After
its formation, he was appointed by the county court as one of the commissioners
to designate districts and to locate a new road between the county seats
of Ervinton and Grundy.
He regularly attended the monthly church meetings
and always carried an axe to clear the bridle paths. He and Aily
were members of Sulphur Spring Primitive Baptist Church. Both are
buried on top of a high hill opposite their home. See E. J. Sutherland's
Some Descendants of John Counts of Glade Hollow, COUNTS D-133 pg. 235,
