Notes for MARGO MICHELLE SYLVESTER:
Taken from the Sylvester 's 1992 Christmas
Newsletter:
"Our third loss is our oldest daughter, Margo, who turned 18 years old on July 12th of this year. At the end of August, Margo entered James Madison University as a freshman. She was at college for only seven weeks when the car accident occurred on October 17, 1992.
"Margo loved nature and star gazing, so with her encouragement a group of at least 12 other college friends left J.M.U. at 4 p.m. in three cars for Reddish Knob to look at the peak fall colors and to watch the sunset. Reddish Knob is a scenic overlook in the foothills southwest of Bridgewater, Virginia. It is located in the George Washington National Forest and is a very popular place with the local college students. This was the first trip for many of the students going that day.
"The accident occurred on State Route 257, a two lane, good hard surface road just inside the National Forest land. The contributing factors were a curve, sun glare, "some speed", a very narrow shoulder, and a large oak tree growing less than four feet from the road as well as growing on the slope of a nine foot ravine. Margo was riding as a passenger in the second car with George, a current boyfriend.
"George was driving his two door 1989 Beretta when he went off the right side of the road at the curve. He over corrected and crossed the double center lines. When he over corrected again, the car slid sideways into the large oak tree on the right side of the road. Margo, who was wearing her seat belt, was sitting in the right front seat where the impact with the tree took place. Lisa Hass, another 18 year old freshman, was sitting behind Margo. She was not wearing her seat belt and died at the scene from her injuries of being thrown into Margo’s front seat. George, the driver, and Jamie, Lisa’s boyfriend who was sitting also in the rear, were taken to the hospital in Harrisonburg. They were treated and released.
"Because of the length of time to free Margo from the wreckage and air lift her to the University of Virginia Medical Center at Charlottesville, Virginia, John and I were told by the neurologists that her chances of survival were not good. Margo had a severe skull fracture and other internal injuries to her right side. John and I were with her while she was in the ICU of the hospital. Margo showed no brain activities at 4 a.m. on Sunday, October 18, the day after the accident. Her requests from an earlier time were honored for her heart, liver, and two kidneys were used for organ transplants. Likewise, she wanted to be cremated. Margo’s remains are buried in Hagerstown, Maryland at the Rest Haven Cemetery. I say that she is laying in the arms of her Grandmother Brumback for Margo is buried above my mother’s vault."
