A, 29th Virginia Infantry, in 1861 and was later a member of Capt. may's Troop of Cavalry.  Most of his serivce was in Kentucky - including the Battle of Middle Creek - as a corporal and sergeant.  He was discharged in 1863.  After Elizabeth's death he married (2) Barbara Colley (Owens / Sutherland).  There were no children born of his second marriage.  (It was her third marriage.)

He served in the Confederate Army under Captain R. M. Hagar.  Jeptha was listed as age 10 in the Russell County, Va. 1850 Census.

 69.  CATHERINE 'KATY'4 RASNICK (Rachel3 Laforce, Catherine 'Katie'2 Sutherland, James1) (#1529) was born 24 April 1832.  Catherine died 24 December 1910 at 78 years of age.
 She married ELIJAH SHELBY COUNTS 23 November 1848.  (Elijah Shelby Counts is #1527.)  Elijah was born 10 February 1828.  Elijah was the son of Joshua Counts and Martha Kiser.  Elijah died 18 October 1907 at 79 years of age.  They lived a few years at Cleveland, Va; a year at the home of his sister, Sylvia (d-130); and a year in a hunter’s cabin at the mouth of Josh’s Branch of Lick Creek before erecting a hewn log house about a mile downstream in 1854.  This became their permanent home.  It is said the neighbors were invited to a house-raising and that the walls of Elijah’s house and those of his brother Noah (D-133), some two miles down stream, were both raised on the same day.  The land on which the house was built was conveyed to him by his father in 1873.  The same year he also purchased an adjoining tract of 670 acres from Dale Carter which, with his 200 adjoining acres purchased from Warders in 1860, gave him a total of 1270 acres - later surveyed to be in reality 2500 acres.  While much of his early life was spent hunting deer, bear, wolves, turkey and other wild game in this wilderness, he and his children also cleared many acres for farming.
As his lick Creek home was located consecutively in three counties, Elijah served as Overseer of the Poor, Russell County, 1852-58; Census Enumerator, Buchanan County, 1860; first Clerk of Sandlick District School Board, 1870; first Overseer of the Poor, Dickenson County.  Because of physical disabilities, he was exempted from military service during the Civil War.  He tried to remain neutral but suffered some harassment. Being better educated than most of his neighbors, he was persuaded to teach a term or two of school after the war.  He donated the hunter’s cabin on Josh’s Branch for the school house.
Church records show Katy transferred her membership by letter from Reeds Valley Baptist Church to Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church in November 1866; was dismissed by letter in 1881. In 1874, Elijah became a member of Reeds Valley Primitive Baptist Church.  He later moved his membership to Sulphur Spring Church.  Licensed to preach on June 1, 1875, he pastored several churches during his 32 year in the ministry.  At the first meeting of the Washington District Primitive Baptist Association after his death, his obituary (written by William B. Sutherland, E-646, son of his sister Sylvia) was ordered published. It stated:
"A firmer man never lived ... Opposed to the introduction of new things amongst the Baptists ... Brother Counts traveled many miles through wet and dry, heat and cold, preaching the glad tidings of great joy, and in his latter days was undoubtedly possessed with brighter views and revelation.  He was entertaining and instructive in his conversation.  He seemed to be greatly impressed in teaching the practical duties of the church and the discriminating laws of Zion and in unfolding the glorious mysteries of the oracles of God’s Word to the edification of the Saints and the feeding of both the sheep and the lambs.  The doctrine ... was not his own, but His who sent him.  He sought not to please men, thereby proving to be a servant of God, ever standing firm upon the walls of Zion and preaching salvation by grace through Christ, and that grace given in Christ before the world began.  We traveled with him much amongst the churches and to associations and, the more we traveled together, the better we loved him. He was honored and esteemed by all sound Primitive Baptists."
Late in life, Elijah thought more and more about his maternal grandfather, Abednego Kiser, who had died in the service of his country before the age of 30, and was buried at Norfolk. In 1907, Elder Counts decided to travel to Norfolk to see the Jamestown Exposition and to search for the grave of his grandfather.  On 6 Oct. 1907, he rode horseback the 20 miles to the nearest railroad station at Cleveland, expecting to take the eastbound train the next morning.  He spent the night with relatives, but morning found him too ill to travel.  Lingering until the 16th, he quietly passed away near the place of his birth and was buried in his father’s graveyard.  For a more complete sketch of the life of Elijah Shelby Counts, see "Some Sandy Basin Characters" by Elihu Jasper Sutherland, pages 67-89.  From E.  He married MARY 'POLLY' BREEDING 15 January 1857.  (Mary 'Polly' Breeding is #2693.)  Mary was born 23 August 1839.  Mary was the daughter of Elijah Breeding and Susanna Artrip.  Mary died 18 April 1905 at 65 years of age.  Her body was interred 21 Apr 1905 in Artrip, Russell Co, Va, Breeding Family Cemetery.  They lived at the head of Lefthand Fork of Lick Creek; moved near Artrip in 1890.  He enlisted in Co. E, 21st Va Cavalry on 28 Mar 1863 for the duration of the Civil War.  In october 1864, while with his company in Buchanan County retarding the retreat of General Burbridge from his unsuccessful attach on Saltville, Elijah was captured by the enemy.  His captors told him that at the first shot from one of his comrades, he would be shot in retaliation.  Soon some shots came from the hills - without hesitation, he plunged down a steep embankment, swam Levisa River and escaped unscathed through a hail of bullets.  COUNTS D-54 pg 48-55

J. S.:  "I was born at Clinchfield, Russell County, Va ... I remember my grandfather, Joseph counts, moved to Iuka, Missippi, when I was about ten years old ... His, son, Uncle Andy Counts, had gone there when a young man ... Great Grandfather Counts (B-3) wa pretty strict.  When Grandpa Joe was nearly twenty-one, they were clearing the bottom at Cleveland, just across the Clinch River ... Grandpa left the house the night before he was free and went out with some boys without asking his father ... The next day Great Grandpa whipped him with a big hickory root.  It made Grandpa so mad that he tried to fell a big tree on his father, but it didn't fall right ... He left and went to the Salt Works at Saltville, where he stayed for sometime ... I've heard my grandmother, Sallie (Sarah Long) Counts, tell of living at Sandlick.  While there, they often had to beat out meal with a maul and had bear middlin's as thick as a case-knife was long ... They raised enoughcattle to buy a farm at Carterton from Truelove Brown.  Uncle Bill and mother and Tom and Josh were born at Sandlick.  Tom died and was buried there.  Mother was the oldest of the family.  She couldn't remember seeing Uncle Tom, but she could remember Uncle Josh who died at Carterton after they moved there.  Uncle billy Counts' girl, Susie (E-350), was taken by her grandmother Counts, and she died there when she was a great big girl.  My grandparents lived at Carterton until they moved South.  The farm is in a big river bottom and was later owned by Jack Carter ... Great Grandpa, Billy Long, lived beyond Lebanon.  He had a son named James who moved to Alabama and became wealthy - owned 90 slaves.  He willed five of them to his sister, Grandma Counts, and nine to his sister, Nancy Kiser, the wife of John Kiser. Grandpa Counts, Uncle Andy Kiser and father went down there after them.  While there, Grandpa stopped at Uncle Henry Long's and at Uncle Andy Counts' - they were neighbors.  They brought two slave men, Mose and Bert.  Mose's wife, Tempy, became Uncle Jeff Jesse's slave.  Bert was single. Three others were left at Uncle Andy Counts'. Sally was the mother of Mose and Bert, and Catherine was her daughter.  He brought Lewis and his wife, Fanny, and their seven children to Aunt Nancy Kiser.  I have their names, Liza and Indiana.  Alex was next - now I remember some more of their names - Sam and Sandy, Dock and Harriett. Not long after this the slaves were freed, but they stayed around a long time ... and did well." They lived at Wakenva, Dickenson County, Virginia. He was a large land owner, farmer and merchant.

 He married MARGARET COUNTS 20 May 1875.  (Margaret Counts is #1617.)  Margaret was born 11 January 1854.  Margaret was the daughter of Noah Counts and Aily Amburgey.  They were married at her father’s home which, at that time, was in Buchanan County.  In 1951, she stated:  "The second day after our marriage, we moved down Lick Creek to where I now live, at the mouth of Left Hand Fork of Lick.  I have lived here since that time.  When Dan and I moved here, we lived in the old log shack (previously built on the place) at first.  It had only one room, and one corner was about rotted down.  Dan and his brother Jack had been batching in the old house for two or three months before we married.  An acre or two had been cleared round the old house, which stood about where the west room of this house now stands.  Another small clearing had been made about a quarter of a mile up the creek where my son, Wade, now lives.  This was the only cleared land on Lick Creek at that time between father’s home and the mouth of the creek - about six miles."   COUNTS E-673 pg 237, COUNTS E-400, pg 124

 99.  JASPER4 SUTHERLAND (William 'Billy'3, Daniel2, James1) (#1582) was born 1 February 1845.  Jasper died 18 June 1936 at 91 years of age.  He married LOUISA DYER in Buchanan County, Va, 29 January 1866.  (Louisa Dyer is #1586.)  Louisa was born 5 February 1848.  Louisa was the daughter of Simpson Dyer and Ritter Burchett.  Louisa died 11 March 1937 at 89 years of age.  They settled near the head of Hatchet Branch (Nora).  This tract of land, a gift to Jasper and Elijah from their father, included a house in which the brothers had been "baching" for several years.  Jas bought out Lige’s interest and in 1887 received a deed from his father for 700 acres (Dickenson County Deed Book 2-143).  A new survey showed the tract contained 1002 acres (Dickenson County Deed Book 2-554). In 1930, he stated:  "Some years before the Civil War, a Hammons found some ore on Mcclure and took it to Dumps Creek to a shop (forge) where he ran out some metal that proved to be silver.  He hunted for the place but couldn't find it again ... He dug a big hole a hundred or two feet deep on the south side of Mcclure below the mouth of Roaring Fork.  He couldn't find any silver, got discouraged and went West.  Some of the Wamplers helped him build a big ladder.  I went and saw the hole while he was digging it.  The old pit is still there ... Sometime later I was hunting a wild-cat near the same place - probably within 200 yeard of the place.  There was three or four inches of snow on, but as I went around a little bench I found the snow off of about 75 square feet of the ground and a pile of something like corn-cobs piled up where the snow was off.  I didn't stop to examine them for my dogs were gettin' close after the wild-cat.  Later I remembered that the old man Hammons had found his silver in just such a place and in a piece of rock just like a corn-cob ... I tried to find the place again.  But the snow was all gone off and I could never find the place or the corn-cobs."
Jasper was a member of Co E, 21st Va Cavalry.  In his recollections (1930), he related some of Co E's military exploits:  "I served in the Confederate Army during part of the war.  I went in at Sandlick, during the summertime, probably in 1863.  At that time Jas Colley was Captain of my company and Zeke Counts was Major.  A short time after I joined, my company was called on to fight Burbridge as he came back from his first attack on the Salt-Works.  About 60 of us went to the Lavisa River below Grundy, but above Rock Lick, and waited for them to come back.  We lay by the road one night and cut trees in the road to block the Yankees.  We didn't take any provisions with us, so next morning we strung out in the neighborhood to get some breakfast.  Then Major Zeek, William Grizzle, Mack Owens and me went to see the blockade.  The Yanks were there in full force.  We darted back into the woods, but they saw us and followed and nearly surrounded us.  We went further into the woods and hills and got away. Major Zeke, Bart Yates and I went up the river and saw some more Yankees.  They got after us again and we had to run and scatter.  Lige Rasnick was in my company.  It was awful hot and we had run and scrambled over the rough hills so much that we were tired out.  William Grizzle suggested that we hide for awhile, but I said, ‘No.'  Major Zeke came up just then and said that the Yanks had caught Lige Rasnick and maybe had killed him.  We got down closer to the road and hid behind some big rocks and saw about 4000 Yanks go by.  Some of the Yanks were negroes - a company or two of them. We fired at the Yanks and they fired back at us. The bullets flew awful thick and glanced off the rocks and made the dirt fly all around us.  Mack Owens was behind a tree, but the bullets came too thick and made it too hot form him, making the bark fly off his tree.  So he ran back to us and hid behind the rocks.  We heard the Yankee officers say, ‘Go up that hollow and surround them.’  We saw a big company coming, so we scaled up the hill and went back down on the other side of the bend to the river again.  Here we saw they had Lige Rasnick a prisoner.  Major Zeke and some of us fired again at the Yankees and they fired back.  This drew their attention, and Lige jumped over the river bank and went down a kind of slip fifty yards or more to the river where he jumped in and swum across and got away.  The Yankees didn't shoot at him until he got nearly to the river, but they let go at him plenty then, but didn't hit him at all.  None of us were hurt.  The Yanks went on down the river, where they met Uncle John Colley and Sol Colley.  The Colleys ran and the Yanks chased them a little.  Sol stumped his toe and fell down and the Yanks hollered a lot. This made Sol mad and he got up and ran off.  When they got to the top of the hill, Uncle John Colley said, ‘Let's take another shot.’  And they did."
Jasper was a farmer, trader and merchant.  He served as Supervisor, Ervinton District, Dickenson County, 1889-93, 1897-99.  Both are buried on their homeplace.  COUNTS E-638 pg. 200.

D. Rush and Virginia Fulton.  They lived in Clintwood.  He attended the Old Buffalo School and Clintwood Normal College; taught in Buchanan and Dickenson counties before going to the University of Richmond Law School, 1902-03.  He began his long and distinguished 68-year law career at Clintwood in January 1904 and remained active until just a few days before his death.  He handled all legal proceedings well but was best known for land cases, which he seemed to enjoy most.  As a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, 1908-09, he introduced the first compulsory school attendance law and sponsored legislation to provide funds for public library books.  He was an active member of the Dickenson County Bar, Virginia State Bar and American Bar Associations.  In 1938, he served on the committee that created the integrated Virginia State Bar Association.  He attended the American Bar Association meetings in Hawaii, 1967; Dallas, Texas, 1969; and New York and London, 1971. (#7489) was born 12 Mar 1881.  Jesse died 6 Nov 1952 at 71 years of age.  He married LYDIA ESTELLA RASNAKE  in Dickenson Co, Va, 10 Mar 1908.  (Lydia Estella Rasnake is #9706.)  Lydia was born 7 Feb 1880.  Lydia was the daughter of Noah Kernan "Dock" Rasnake and Margaret Kelly.  She married J. W. SPURGEON "SPURGE" PENLAND  in Dickenson Co, Va, 13 Aug 1896.  They divorced in 1907.  They had 1 child, Blanche Penland, was raised by her paternal grandparents in North Carolina.  COUNTS E-259, pg. 72.
    Lydia died 13 Feb 1961 at 81 years of age.  After attending Clintwood Normal College, he taught school before entering the Richmond Medical College.  He was a beloved family doctor in Dickenson county until 1935.  He moved to Sparta, Illinois, and continued his practice.  He was killed in a car accident.  He married ELIZABETH 'BETSY' DYER in Buchanan County, Va, 8 October 1868.  (Elizabeth 'Betsy' Dyer is #1587.)  Elizabeth was born 24 October 1845.  Elizabeth was the daughter of Simpson Dyer and Ritter Burchett.  Elizabeth died 9 February 1916 at 70 years of age.  In 1869, they became the first settlers on Priest Fork of Frying Pan Creek, where many of their descendants still live.  He was a deacon of the Sulphur Spring Primitive Baptist Church for many years; the Overseer of the Poor, Sandlick District 1897-99; and a member of the first Grand Jury for Dickenson County in August 1880.  In 1924, he recalled:  "I was on the venire when the court house scare took place at Clintwood.  The old brick court house had been looking wobbly ... One day during court, one of the sleepers holding up the floor gave way or broke and everybody in the court house thought it was falling.  Judge George Counts was on the bench.  He jumped over the bench and through a window, badly tearing his pants. Ham Lyle got knocked down and nearly killed by people trampling him.  George Dyer got out but left most of his coattail.  I got hung in a chair and couldn’t move at all."   Newt was born at Cleveland, Va.  Both are buried in the William Sutherland Cemetary.  E. 'Polly' Artrip.  Jasper died circa 1930.  They lived in the Sink Hole Section of Russell County, Va. before moving to Cleveland, Va. in order to have a better school for their children. He had a livery stable at Cleveland; was constable, deputy sheriff, sheriff, justice of the peace, and postmaster (8 years); is buried in the Joshua J. Counts Cemetery. Her Niece, Lucy Jo Sutherland Pagenhardt, stated in 1974 that Martha lived to be over a hundred years old. (Per E. J. Sutherland)

 140.  ABRAHAM 'ABE'4 KISER (Nimrod3, Mary Polly2 Sutherland, James1) (#1884) was born 25 March 1857.  Abraham died 1939 at 82 years of age.
 He married SARAH 'SALLIE' SUTHERLAND 14 November 1876.  (Sarah 'Sallie' Sutherland is #1492.)  Sarah was born 3 June 1861.  Sarah was the daughter of Jesse Sutherland and Mahala Kiser.  Sarah died 1943 at 82 years of age.  Sarah's headstone lists her birth as 1861 and death as 1943. Abe and Sarah are burned in the Chaney Ridge/Powers/Kiser Family Cemetery.  They have a double marker.  The graves are in Row 3, #14.

 145.  JAMES SCHOFIELD 'TUG'4 KISER (James Marshall "Buck Jim"3, Mary Polly2 Sutherland, James1) (#1908) birth date unknown.
 He married NANCY ALICE DOTSON.  (Nancy Alice Dotson is #1911.)  Nancy was the daughter of Austin Dotson and Priscilla Kiser.
 They lived on Sandy Ridge.  He became blind in old age and lived with his son, Mont.
 The following story was told to E.J. Sutherland by RUSSELL POWERS, b. 10 Dec 1867, s/o JOHN and (2) MARGARET RASNICK (COUNTS D-25 pg. 38) BREEDING POWERS.  Margaret Rasnick Breeding was the daughter of ELIJAH and (2) ELIZABETH LITTON RASNAKE and the widow of JAMES HARVEY BREEDING.
 January 7, 1938, Clintwood, Va.  I knew Aaron Gibson fairly well.  He was a neighbor of mine for some time before he was killed.  He lived near me on Sandy Ridge, near Hazel, Va.  His wife was Sallie Laforce a daughter of John Wesley Laforce. They had two children:  Aaron Gibson and Sam, I believe his name was.  After Aaron Gibson’s death, his widow, Sallie Laforce Gibson, married Henry Sutherland, a son of Mont.
 I was at the party at (JAMES SCHOFIELD) “TUG” KISER’s on Sandy Ridge when Aaron was killed.  He was instantly killed by a pistol shot.  It was during the winter time.  I had been around to Sam Sutherland’s, whose wife was my half-sister, to the wedding of one of his girls.  Sylvester Laforce was with me and we started back home after the wedding.  When we got near Tug’s we heard a fiddle.  We were hunting for some liquor at the time, so we figured that Tug was having a party, and we could get a drink there.  We went in the house, and found Dock Brown playing the fiddle. There were several people there.  It was after night and we stayed around for some time. Later Aaron Gibson came in the house.  He was drinking and soon got into a racket with Taylor Sutherland.  Aaron hit Taylor in the breast with a rock and hurt him pretty badly.  As Aaron threw the rock, he slipped on the floor and fell out of the door into the darkness.  I picked up the rock and put it on the mantel.  Taylor was making a fuss over being hit, and I was trying to console him.  Some of the other people there said they saw Tug get his pistol and go outside, but I did not see this action.  The racket tore up the party, and I went home.
 The next morning, me and my wife went out Sandy Ridge toward some of our relatives.  As we passed Tug Kiser’s house, we found Gibson lying on his back beside the road about 30 or 40 feet from the house.  He was dead.  There was a little snow on the ground.  They sent for Dr. Lem Phipps at Clintwood, and when he came he found that Gibson had been shot through the breast, and the bullet was resting against the hide on the back.  Tug had had no trouble as far as I know with Gibson before this.  Taylor Sutherland was drinking at the time of the trouble.  Gibson was a low, heavy-set man, and was very strong.  Tug said he was afraid of him, as were a lot of the other neighbors.  He and Sim Kiser fought once to a draw, but Sim was a much larger man than Gibson.
 Tug was indicted at Clintwood for the murder of Gibson.  The trial was on the docket twelve months before the trial in the County Court.  I came to Clintwood eleven of the twelve days set for trial and started on the 12th when I heard it has been continued.  It seemed that the trial was badly botched up in several ways.  One of these unusual things was the way the court allowed some jurors to serve.  For instance, Sol Colley, when asked by the court, said he wouldn’t agree to a verdict to hang a man, but the court allowed him to serve on the jury.  Tug came clear at the trial, but most everybody believed he was guilty. See Pioneer Recollections, pg.. 290 & 276.

 He married CARRIE NELIA KISER in Russell County, Virginia, 4 Jul 1899.  (Carrie Nelia Kiser is #1916.)  Carrie was born in Russell County, Virginia 27 Jun 1879.  Carrie was the daughter of Lilburn Hendricks Kiser and Frances 'Frankie' Sutherland.  Carrie died 27 Feb 1968 in New Freedom, York County, Pennsylvania, at 88 years of age.

 He married MARY JANE POWERS.  (Mary Jane Powers is #2206.)  Mary was born 5 February 1870.  Mary was the daughter of Charles Carter Powers and Nancy Artrip.  She was a sister to Elzenia "Een" Powers who married John Tivis Kiser, brother to George Washington Kiser. They lived near the head of Hurricane Fork.  He was a farmer and merchant.  He wrote on 3 Feb 1948, while living at Clintwood, Va:  "I was born near Carrie (once Rollpone), Virginia, 19 February 1867.  My  parents were ELIHU L. KISER and MARY ANDERSON.  My Kiser grandparents were EPHRIAM KISER and POLLY SUTHERLAND.  They lived on Mill Creek of Clinch River, near Carbo, Virginia - in the next house above Uncle Dan Kiser’s mill, and where most of his children were born.  Uncle Noah Kiser lived at his Daddy’s Place after Grandpa died, and one of Uncle Noah’s children was Burb Kiser, who also lived there.  My mother was an Anderson.  I believe Amos was her father’s name, and "One-Armed George" Anderson, of Sand Lick, was her brother.  When I first can recollect, the Andersons lived on Gravel Lick.  They all died years ago, and I never knew them very well. Father moved to Sandy Ridge just after his marriage in 1857.  I think the land he got was a part of the patent or survey for Old Charley Kiser.It was on the county line between Dickenson and Russell Counties.  Father claimed the county line ran through the corner of his house.  He slept and voted in Russell County.  His land and Uncle Jeptha Kiser’s land was first laid off together but later divided, Uncle Jepth’s home being about one-fourth mile east of Daddy’s. Other early neighbors of ours were:  Jake Lambert - lived on head of Caney Fork of Indian Creek; Elijah Rasnick - lived on headwaters of Hurricane Fork of Dumps Creek; Jim Rasnick - lived on ridge near where his son Lige now lives; Sammy Sutherland - lived further west on Sandy Ridge; John S. Duty - lived on head of Indian Creek above Eiven Tiller’s; Uncle Henry Kiser - lived where Bob Kiser now owns - out next to Carrie Post Office; Uncle Jim (James M "Buck Jim") Kiser (father of James Schofield "Tug" Kiser) - lived further west on the Tug Kiser farm on Sandy Ridge - I think they moved there before Pa moved to Sandy Ridge; and John Powers - lived where his son Arch later lived.  Lie Sutherland was the first person living at Rollpone (Wilder) that I can recollect.  Father put an "L" in his name to make it different from other Elihu Kisers.  Mother put a "D" in her name, but I don’t know why."  E.  155.  JOHN TIVIS4 KISER (Elihu L.3, Mary Polly2 Sutherland, James1) (#1931) was born 21 May 1869.  John died 8 April 1928 at 58 years of age.
 He married ELZENIA 'EEN' POWERS.  (Elzenia 'Een' Powers is #2207.)  Elzenia was born 15 May 1872.  Elzenia was the daughter of Charles Carter Powers and Nancy Artrip.  Elzenia died 27 December 1959 at 87 years of age.

      John Tivis Kiser and Elzenia 'Een' Powers had the following family:

        i.  CHARLIE5 (#6966).  He married CYNTHIA CATHERINE "KATE" KISER .  (Cynthia Catherine "Kate" Kiser is #6961.)  Cynthia was the daughter of Dolphus Kiser and Mahala Kiser.

        iii.  MALVA ALTA (#6968).  She married VAUDIE GARSON KISER .  (Vaudie Garson Kiser is #6962.)  Vaudie was the son of Dolphus Kiser and Mahala Kiser.

 156.  MARY CAROLINE 'CARRIE'4 KISER (Elihu L.3, Mary Polly2 Sutherland, James1) (#1933) was born 1 August 1873.
 She married POWELL KISER.  (Powell Kiser is #1868.)  Powell was born 5 March 1882.  Powell was the son of Henry Kiser and Leah Duty.  Powell died 9 April 1935 at 53 years of age.  The Carrie Post Office is named for her.

 157.  ELIHU CAPERTON 'BABE'4 KISER (Elihu L.3, Mary Polly2 Sutherland, James1) (#1935) was born 15 April 1876.  Elihu died 13 Jan 1931 at 54 years of age.
 He married MISSOURI ILET "DOLLIE" POWERS 21 Dec 1898.  (Missouri Ilet "Dollie" Powers is #6976.)  Missouri was the daughter of James Harvey Powers and Elizabeth Sutherland.  He was a merchant at Carrie.

      Elihu Caperton 'Babe' Kiser and Missouri Ilet "Dollie" Powers had the following family:

        i.  WILLIAM ROBINETTE5 (#6977) was born 2 Oct 1899.  William died 1956 in Galax, Va, at 56 years of age.
        ii.  HERBERT SCOTT (#6978) was born 8 May 1901.  Herbert died Jan 1958 in Logan, WV, at 56 years of age.
        iii.  BELDON UTAH (#6979) was born 4 Oct 1902.  Beldon died 3 Aug 1988 in Clintwood, Dickenson Co, Va, at 85 years of age.  He married BESSIE OWENS .  (Bessie Owens is #6980.)  Bessie was the daughter of General Burbridge Owens and Louisa Bowman.
        iv.  NETTIE DALLAS (#6983) was born 29 Sep 1906.  Nettie died 28 Dec 1908 in Dickenson Co, Va, at 2 years of age.
        v.  AUBREY (ORA?) LEE (#6984) was born 16 Jun 1911.
        vi.  JAMES MARSHALL CURTIS (#6985) was born 23 Dec 1918.  James died 25 Jul 1961 in Jacksonville, Duval Co, Fl, at 42 years of age.

 She married CHARLES BRUCE SMITH in Russell Co, Va, 31 Dec 1888.  (Charles Bruce Smith is #8578.)  Charles was born 16 Jan 1869.  Charles was the son of William Patton Kiser and Phoebe Smith.  They lived on Sandy Ridge near Carrie.

        viii.  SADIE (#6954).  She married R. W. KISER  in Russell Co, Va.  (R. W. Kiser is #6955.)  R. was the son of Henry Kiser and Leah.  He was listed as age 23 when he married in 1909. His parents are listed on the marriage record as being Henry and Leah Kiser.  There is a Henry Kiser, son of Ephriam and Mary "Polly" Sutherland who married Leah Duty, but W. R. is not listed among their children.  It is probable he is their child, but he is not shown among this Henry's 19 children. She is listed as age 17 when she married in 1909.
