1.  JAMES1 SUTHERLAND (#110) was born in Scotland circa 1750.  James died 1825 at 75 years of age.
 He married twice.  He married SARAH BUCHANAN.  (Sarah Buchanan is #111.)  Sarah died after 1815.  He married NANCY SMITH.  (Nancy Smith is #1446.)
 James Sutherland "came from over the sea."  The exact place of his birth is shrouded in oblivion, so far as his descendants now know.  There is a strong tradition in the family that he was Scotch. The name SUTHERLAND is a very ancient Scotch name. A large portion of the extreme north of Scotland is known as the County of Sutherland and has had that name for more than seven hundred years. There were several ships, crowded with immigrants, coming to America from Scotland during the period of his youth.  It is most likely that he was one of these wanderers from "dear Scotia."
 Nothing is known of his parents or his brothers and sisters.  The date of his birth is also unknown.  The United States Census of 1820 for Russell County, Virginia (the only census in which his name appears) records that he and his wife were both of 45 and upwards."  His oldest child, Nancy Sutherland Yates, was born about 1780.  It is therefore probable that he was at least 20 years old at that event.  Evidently he was born not later than 1760.
