Browns and Leepers of Early Augusta County, Virginia:

A Finding Aid for Research in Chalkleys References

Compiled by James Armistead Brown, Jr.

Foreword: Almost four decades before the American Revolution, Virginia’s Augusta County – in the upper Shenandoah Valley – became an important “stopover” residence for the main group treated at the present website, specifically the William Brown family of Waxhaws District NC/SC, later of northeastern Tennessee and points west.  Also, members of the closely associated Leeper family migrated to Augusta more-or-less simultaneously with the Browns. Therefore a genealogist studying these Browns, Leepers and related families will necessarily be drawn to colonial Augusta County documents.

Presented below is an aid for research in the Augusta documentary sources. It’s a list of “clickable” hyperlinks to pages in the on-line version of Lyman Chalkley’s massive Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia.  The linked pages are those indexed by Chalkley’s on-line editors for references to individuals carrying the “Brown” and “Leeper” surnames.

(Note: No attempt is made below to differentiate among what clearly were several unrelated Brown families. On the other hand, all of the Leepers appear to be from one extended family.)

Chalkley’s three large volumes, originally published in 1912, consist mostly of abstracts from the surviving court and vestry records of early Augusta County. In one place or another, these volumes list nearly every free adult male, perhaps most of the free adult females, and very many of the children who lived in the County during the Colonial Era – often with valuable information on their relationships to one another. Unfortunately however, the work has serious errors of both commission and omission, especially the latter.  A discussion of Chalkley’s drawbacks may be found at the Library of Virginia’s website. The unmistakable message of this LoV critique is that the conscientious researcher will employ Chalkley primarily as a means of formulating hypotheses and locating original source documents. Chalkley should seldom (if ever) be used for a stand-alone, authoritative citation. Moreover, one should never interpret the absence of a record in Chalkley to indicate that a particular individual was not in the County during the 1700’s. Still, in spite of its faults, Chalkley’s magnum opus remains an indispensable point of departure for virtually any student of colonial Augusta County.

Finally, to formulate a full and proper citation for any Chalkley reference, or to find the original source document upon which Chalkley relied for a given abstract, the researcher will need to match Chalkley’s page and volume numbers to the Tables of Contents for the three volumes, linked here:
