The Shilton family research has so far reached a sticky end in Berkshire. The man at the top of the family tree is William Shilton. He was, according to the 1841 census, born in Berkshire and was at that time a publican in Windmill Lane, Great Faringdon. I have yet been unable to find a marriage between himself and his 'wife' Sarah Ansell. The only clue to William before the 1841 census return, had been a card index showing "William Shilton of Bradfield Elect. Reg. 1832" However, evidence then lead me to Madingley, Cambridgeshire, where William appears as the father of John and William baptised there in 1827 and 1830. He is stated as William of Chilton nr Hungerford, Berks and was a servant.
So could he be William of Bradfield from the 1832 Elect. register and be the same man from Chilton and Madingley? Possibly, but I cannot link his movements before 1838. By 1838 he was living in Faringdon.
There is also a reference to Shiltons of Bradfield in a collection of wills i.e. John Shilton of Bradfield, Yeoman in 1798 and Thomas Shilton of Bradfield, Yeoman in 1775, and William Shilton of Bradfield, Gentleman in 1815. However, we do not yet know if this is the same family.
According to a recently found 1851 census, William Shilton was probably born in Shellingford, near Faringdon, Berkshire in about 1800, perhaps the son of Thomas Shilton, of Shellingford and his wife,Elizabeth, although there is no confirmed link as yet.
If this is the case, then Thomas and Elizabeth were the parents of:
William Shilton b 1800? Shellingford
m ?? to Sarah Ansell
d 27.6.1872 Faringdon
Susannah Shilton bp 1.5.1803 Shellingford
m 2.11.1837 Wantage to Thomas Hester
d by 1881
Ann Shilton bp 20.7.1806 Shellingford
The marriage entry of Susannah states that she is the daughter of Thomas Shilton, publican, so this gives us a little extra information. Perhaps William was publican in what was his father's pub. Thomas was buried on 25th January 1837. His widow Elizabeth is living in Great Faringdon in 1841 with Jane Whaine. Elizabeth died on 8th February, 1846 at Faringdon.
William appears on the 1841 census with his 'wife' Sarah (Ansell) and sons John, George and daughter Mary at Windmill Lane, Great Faringdon where he was a Beerhouse Keeper, possibly at the Red House (which no longer exists).
In 1851 William and Sarah lived in Chawton, near Alton in Hampshire.
Their children were:

William was a butler to Edward Knight and his family at Chawton House, Chawton, Hants but Sarah and the children were living seperately in Chawton Street, Sarah being a farmer of 10 acres. She was stated as being born in Madingley, Cambridgeshire. Neither appear to be in Chawton by 1861. William appears to have returned to Farringdon, Berks by 1871 where he was lodging at the Angel Inn, Market Place, a widower. He died there on 27th June, 1872 of Heart disease, aged 72. No family members were in attendance.
George Shilton was born on 13th December, 1838 at Windmill Street, Great Faringdon, Berkshire. George married Mary Jane Footner (daughter of George Footner), a domestic servant on 18th August, 1874 at Pimlico.
At the time, he was a butler at Little Chester Street, London.
They had two children:

George William Shilton (Grocer) b 1882 Pimlico

It was assumed that this photograph was of George Shilton and his wife Mary Jane, taken approx. 1887. However, we now know that George was widowed at least as early as 1891, but moreover, this lady appears in the wedding photo of Bert Lym which took place after 1901. In which case, it is now thought to be that of George's sister Ellen Lym (nee Shilton)
By 1881 George, Jane and Alice were living at 2 Palace Street, Westminster, where George was working for the Lady of the House, Rachel Allen.
By 1891 George was working as a servant at Alderhurst, Egham in Surrey. He was now widowed.
By 1901 George was working as a Domestic Butler in Kensington. He died on 15th April, 1914 and is buried at Tottenham cemetry.
Alice Eleanor Shilton was born on 1st June, 1875 at Westminster.
In 1891 she and her brother, George were living at Evelyn Place, Tottenham with her aunt and uncle Ellen and Jospeh Lym and their family.
She was living at 162 Church Road, Tottenham when she married George Nicholas Kille on 16th July, 1898 at Tottenham. This was where they were living when her first daughter Grace Winifred Kille was born in 1899.
The photo opposite is for Alice Eleanor Shilton and her younger brother, George taken approx. 1887.
George William Shilton was born in 1882. He was a Grocer and had a sweet shop in Church Road, Tottenham. In 1901 George and Emma lived at
16 Gloucester Road, Edmonton.
He married Emma Gibbons and they had two sons:
Albert Shilton b 1901 Edmonton
m ? Maud Lottie?
d 1981 Tottenham
Roy Shilton b ?
Ellen Shilton born in Alton in 1847 was the youngest of George's siblings and she married Matthew Jospeh Lym in Kensington in 1873.
They had four children:
Joseph George Lym b 1874
William Walter Lym b 1875 Hammersmith
Herbert Shilton Lym b 1879 Edmonton
m 1906 Edmonton to Florence Victoria Hardy
George Lym b 1886 Tottenham

[The following information has been obtained by help given to me by Jane Hurst who in turn had inherited a great deal of data on the people of Chawton village, including the Shiltons - thank you Jane].

John Shilton was possibly born in Faringdon, Berks but baptised in 1827 at Madingley, Cambs. He was the son of William Shilton and Sarah of Chilton, Berks. At the time of the 1851 census when his father and siblings were living at Chawton, Hants, John was a carpenter & joiner lodging at 3 Dorset Street, Islington with Thomas Philips and his wife Mary.prenticeship. He is not found again until 1871 when he was married to Elizabeth Willows, daughter of James Willows and Mary (whom he married in 1854) and living at Islington. His brother Thomas Shilton born in 1845, a Carpenter was living with him. In 1881 he was living at 5 Vorley Road, London (RG11/0246/88/3).
