On the English Origins website I found the details of James PORTER senior's indenture of apprenticeship from 1763 which gives his father's name, George PORTER, a shoemaker, and his home town - Douglas in Scotland. James was apprenticed to John NIND on 13 June 1763 and was probably aged in his late teens - born c1745. His father George back in Douglas was probably born c1710-1720...'

- [S55] Research notes by Michael FLYNN; 8 May 2001, 'The Porters: London Origins' (PorterStory1.rtf): 'James PORTER senior applied for a marriage licence in October 1766. He was described as a resident of St Mary's parish Lambeth, a glassmaker aged 21 and upwards. His prospective bride was Catherine HARLEY of Battersea, a spinster and also aged over 21. The licence was issued by the Commissary Court of Surrey. Two dates are recorded on the abstract, the first being 16 October 1766, probably the initial date of application, both parties being described as of Battersea. The second record dated 17 November 1766 described James as being of Lambeth parish and Catherine of Battersea. The register of St Mary's Battersea indicates that the ceremony took place there on 18 November 1766, with James being described as being of St Mary's Lambeth and Catherine as 'of this parish'. Both appear to have been able to sign their names, although the signatures are very similar.'
- [S40] E-mail, Michael FLYNN to Judy WEBSTER, 27 Feb 2006, quoting The History and antiquities of the parish of Lambeth in the County of Surrey (1786) (anonymous), which Michael found via the Gale Group's 18th Century Collections database at the NSW State Library: 'St Mary's parish, Lambeth, south London - transcript of epitaphs 1786. On an upright stone: In memory of Mrs Elizabeth Haythorne of this parish who died October 12th 1774 aged 61 years. Also Mr James Porter son-in-law of the above Mrs Elizabeth Haythorne who died April 7th 1777 aged 35 years. Also three of his children.'
