Christmas 2002

Season’s Greetings

Over the past year, many exciting things have happened to the members of our family. Especially for our son Josh.

STAN

Stan is still driving tractor-trailer. Freight has been down somewhat this year in comparison to previous years. He did however get the chance to build a picnic table with Josh last June. Let me tell you that this picnic table is very heavy and there is no way that it can grow legs and walk away very easily. It is a very pretty color too! The color is ‘wineberry’ and to me looks more to be a pinkish/lavender. You should be able to see the glare there where you live. But, because we had the extra paint I also painted my lawn swing the same color. Stan also got the chance to put in some deer hunting and did end up with a doe which I am in the process of getting ground up.

JUDY

My year has been in turmoil. From the beginning of Josh’s senior year of school I went to his soccer games, basketball games. Watched my youngest graduate from high school and leave the fold of our family to go into the Army. I have often been asked why he didn’t go on to college. To tell everyone truthfully I feel Josh is SAFER in the military than at the local college where drugs/parties run rampant. I also can not see Josh doing what I would consider Grade 13 - he totally hated to do school work unless it had something to do with computers - forget it!  The military sure did not do his father nor his grandfathers' (both sides) any harm.

The military instills responsibility, respect, honor and love of country. My hobbies (other than worrying about everyone) include watching the news, genealogy & watching the kittens Sandy & Shrek play, they were born July 18th. They are our only animal family left because Boots (Stan’s cat) and Sport (our dog) needed to be put to sleep. The kittens get into trouble and make the whole family laugh. Some of the things they do would make you chuckle. These kittens think they need to be in high places - so their favorite hang out places are on our shoulders.

SHAWNA

Shawna is our "social butterfly". She loves to go places and be with people. She spent most of this summer up to her Aunt Marta’s & Uncle David’s. For those of you who do not recognize the names Marta is Stan’s sister who lived in Colden. Well, Shawna spent her time helping Marta decide what to keep and helped her sell items at a lawn sale and house hold auction.  Marta and David decided to sell their home and  bought a ‘house on wheels’ David retired and they wanted to travel.

Shawna came home a couple of days before Josh left for the Army in September.

Since then she has been busy with her mutt (Tunk), helping me find a place in the house to put a Christmas tree, baking Christmas cookies and at other times has been going with her friends to do fun things.

One of Shawna’s friends Tammy Hunt is part of a Rock band "Wayside" with her brother Chad. Shawna has been going with the band to lend ‘moral’ support and is their #1 groupie/roadie.

JOSH (Stanley  J. Cwiklinski IV)

In March of this year the Whitesville Central Schools Boy’s Varsity Basketball team won the Section V Class D basketball title.

The picture above was in the "Times Herald" newspaper in Olean, NY. Josh in no way was going to give up the ball.

Josh’s winning shot

Josh also made the winning shots during a playoff game at Alfred University.

We had been down 22 points going into last half of the game. We ruled the basketball court during the 4th quarter and came within striking distance to win thanks to Josh. Making the first shot the coach of the other team thought to throw Josh off his shot. But Josh swished the shot. The team members then gave Josh the nickname "Iceman".

Josh also participated in NY State Area All-State and was also in Allegany All County Chorus. He participated in "Upward Bound" at Houghton College where he finished up on my birthday the 8th of August.

Josh Basic Training - Sept 21, 2002

On September 18th, 2002 he was inducted into the Army and flew to Ft. Jackson, SC where he underwent Basic Training. He graduated Basic Training Nov. 26th. The 27th he flew to Ft. Bliss, TX (near El Paso), and on Thanksgiving Day he was ’adopted’ by a local family for the holiday. Josh will be at the address given until the beginning of August 2003. He is undergoing his AIT (Advanced Individual Training).

Josh’s current address is:

((now at home))

Because this it seems as if this Christmas newsletter has more of a military theme I am also including Stan’s military picture from when he was in Basic Training. This is the only professionally taken military picture that we have. The original is in very bad shape - ripped, torn and bent. You will notice that I didn’t do a bad job of editing and fixing it.

You will also note that he doesn’t have a moustashe? I have never seen him without one (since I have known him) and this is one of the few pictures I have ever seen of him that he actually doesn’t have one. It will be the only time you will ever see him without one.

Best Wishes & Happy Holidays,
