Mrs Elizabeth Donehue, wife of Mr Frank Donehue, of "Felton", Carapook, passed away at the Coleraine Bush-Nursing Hospital at 1 am on Friday last. She had been an inmate of the hospital for five weeks. She was born at Branxholme 62 years ago, being a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Henry Grey. For the past 25 years she, with her husband and family, had lived at Carapook, where her husband is a well known grazier. She was a keen work for social functions and public institutions at Carapook and an ardent member of Scots Church, Casterton. She is survived by a husband, five daughters and two sons. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon at Casterton where the Rev G L Richardson conducted the burial service.
GREY - The death occurred on Christmas Day of Mrs Catherine Grey, who was aged 72 years. She had been an inmate of the Horsham Base Hospital for the past six years. Born at Glenisla, the late Mrs Grey was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Varley and was married at McKenzie Creek at the age of 39 years. Her husband Mr John Grey, was accidentally killed some years ago, and there was no family. The following are brothers and sisters of deceased: Mr Thomas Varley (Drung South), Eliza (Mrs Helyer, New Zealand), May (Mrs Myer, Henty NSW) Messrs. Ernest A and Alexander A Varley of Drung South. The Funeral took place on Monday, leaving St Andrews Presbyterian Church after a service by the Rev J Fairlie Forrest.
The death occurred on Wednesday at the Horsham base hospital of Mrs Ellen Amelia Grey, wife of Hugh Grey of Mill Street, Horsham. Deceased was born at Woolpooer, was 49 years of age. Apart from a sorrowing husband, she leaves two daughters, Irene and Elizabeth to whom deep sympathy has been extended. Her remains were interred in the Horsham Cemetery on Wednesday.
WOMAN DIES IN SMASH
A Hamilton woman was killed on Thursday when she was
involved in a railway crossing accident. She was Freda Grey, 70, of
Alexandra
Parade. The accident happened when a car and train crashed at an
unmanned
crossing on the Midland Highway. Her grandson Mr William McGregor, of
Park
Street, Portland who was driving the car, was injured in the crash near
Byrneside, 114 miles north of Melbourne. He was taken to the Mooroopna
Hospital where his condition was described as satisfactory. The three
carriage
diesel rail motor was traveling from Toolamba to Echuca. The car and
train
were badly damaged.
Mr George Grey, of Carrsdale, Branxholme, died recently in the Glenelg Base Hospital, Hamilton, after a long illness. Mr Grey, 82, was a son of the late Henry and Mary Grey, of Branxholme.
Three brothers, Hugh, Sam and Dave, and two sisters Mary (Mrs McPherson) and Elizabeth (Mrs Donehue) predeceased him. The surviving brothers and sisters are: Bob (Shepparton); William (Melbourne); Margaret (Mrs Jackson, Melbourne); Amy (Mrs Hutchinson, Horsham); Frank (Melbourne) and Harold (Branxholme).
Mr Grey married Miss Ethel Millard at Wallacedale in 1912, and they have lived at Carrsdale, Branxholme for the past 50 years.
There are six children: Alma (Mrs T Ratcliffe, Condah); Methyl (Mrs JA Hayhoe, Branxholme); Violet (Mrs C Heaney, Hamilton); Athol (Branxholme); Lucy (Mrs R Watt, Branxholme); and June (Mrs A C McErvale, Wallacedale); seventeen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Mr Grey was well-known for his great interest in horses, Jersey cattle and dogs. He was a life member of the Branxholme Pastoral and Agricultural Society, having assisted at all shows held by the Society.
The funeral service at the Presbyterian Church, Branxholme and at the Condah Cemetery was conducted by the Rev W A Johnstone. Pall-bearers were Messrs Athol Grey, C Heaney, JA Hayhoe and R Watt. The Masonic service at the graveside was read by Mr A Leask.
A Branxholme man involved in many of the town's organizations and clubs was buried at the Branxholme cemetery on Monday afternoon. Mr Harold Alfred Grey died at Hamilton Base Hospital on Friday.
The burial followed a funeral service at the Branxholme Presbyterian Church which was conducted by Rev Fyfe of Branxholme, and Rev R Davis, of Macarthur. Mr Grey's popularity in the district was revealed by the large crowd and many floral tributes at the funeral. Born at South Branxholme, Mr Grey was the son of the late Henry and Mary Grey.
He was the man behind the formation of the town's bowling green which was opened only two weeks ago. Mr Grey was also the instigator of the Branxholme Indoor Bowling Club. A life member of the Branxholme P & A Society, he was also a former president of the Branxholme Hall Committee.
During World War I he was a member of the Home Defense. Mr Grey, 71 had been a member of the Masonic Lodge since March, 25, 1926. He was appointed a Justice of the peace on September 17, 1959. A commission agent for Southern Farmers for two years, Mr Grey was a farmer and three years ago leased his property to his son-in-law. Mr Grey was president of the Back to Branxholme celebrations in March 1972.
He is survived by his wife Myrtle, daughter Lynette, son-in-law Ray Downes and grandchildren, Tania, Narelle and Matthew.
An old identity of the district in the person of Mr Henry Grey, died on Sunday morning last at the age of 76 years. He had been in indifferent health for the past 4 - 5 months, though prior to that he had been able to get about very well, having been accustomed to live an active life.
Mr Grey was born at Bordertown (S.A.) and in 1877 married Miss Mary Black of this district, who survives him. The couple have spent most of the 53 years of married life in the Branxholme district. Mr Grey followed farming pursuits.
At the funeral on Monday a large number of friends attended to pay their last tribute of respect. Rev. J.A. Pawson officiated at the house and the grave. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Mr Greed of Hamilton.
Mr Robert Grey, 82, of the Lutheran Rest Home, Horsham, formerly of Glenisla, who died at the Wimmera Base Hospital on Saturday, will be buried today.
He was born at Mooralla, the son of Mr and Mrs John Grey, and later married Mary Ann Coustley, at Hamilton. Brothers and sisters: Norman (Yarraville), Frank (Rupanyup) and Cis (Mrs A Anderson, Glenisla). After his marriage he lived and worked in the Warrnambool - Hamilton area, until he went to live with his sister at Glenisla nine years ago.He moved to the Lutheran Rest Home recently and had been in ill health for some years. His sons and daughters are: Percy, Gordon (dec), Ernest, Leslie and Eileen.
He was buried in Horsham Cemetery today after an 11 am service at Horsham Presbyterian Church by the Rev R Corr.
In our last issue brief reference was made to the death of Mrs Sarah Grey, wife of Frank Grey, of Rupanyup North. This sad event occurred at the home of Mr Grey’s parents at Cavendish early on Thursday morning last. The deceased lady who was 41 years of age, had endured considerable suffering during a protracted illness, from which, sad to relate, little, if any, hope was held out for her recovery. For many months the deceased lingered on, bearing her trouble with wonderful fortitude and, whilst, her end was not unexpected, her demise is deeply mourned by a large circle of friends, amongst whom the deceased was held in the very highest esteem. Many good deeds marked her life, the whole of which had been spent at Uranium North, where her parents the late Mr and Mrs William Carter selected land over 50 years ago, they being amongst the first settlers to arrive in this district. Deceased was their second eldest daughter.
In the heavy cross which they have been called to bear, the sorrowing husband and two sons John and Willie, the eldest boy being nine years, heartfelt sympathy is extended, also to other relatives sorrow is expresses in their sad bereavement.
Sisters and brothers of the deceased lady are Jane (Mrs J Carter, Sydney), Mary (deceased), Susanna (deceased), Emily (Mrs O'Breen, Yarraville), Susan (Mrs J Smith, Yarraville), Lillian (Mrs E Belfrage, yesterday), William, Robert (deceased), Charles (deceased) and John of Rupanyup North.
Deceased's mortal remains were laid to rest in the Rupanyup cemetery last Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large number of sympathizing friends. Beautiful wreaths were sent by relatives and friends. The coffin bearers were six of Mr Frank Grey’s brothers, viz., Robert, Leslie, Alfred, Norman, Frederick and Henry.
The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. F. W. Rankin, Presbyterian minister.
Mr Robert Hutchinson, of 31 Harriet St, Horsham, died at his home on Sunday, aged 73.
He was born at Wail, the son of Mr and Mrs George Hutchinson, and when aged 29 married Amy Beatrice Gray at Horsham. Mrs Hutchinson is still living.
Mr Hutchinson is survived by three sons, Robert Douglas (Melbourne), Norman Bruce (Mt Gambier) and Graham Ralph (Melbourne) and a daughter Lesley Joan (Mrs A Kroker, Horsham).
Mr Hutchinson was Horsham's first RSL President and former the 1st Scout Group in Horsham. One of Australia's first enlisted men, he had the low serial number of 571. He fought at Gallipoli and rose to the rank of sergeant.
Mr Hutchinson was cremated at Ballarat Crematorium yesterday after a service at Horsham Presbyterian Church. An RSL Service was held at the church so that many friends unable to go to Ballarat could attend.
Services at the church and crematorium were conducted by Rev R Corr and the RSL service was by Mr F Graham. Mr B Barnes sounded the last post. A Masonic service at the crematorium was led by Mr W Hobbs of Horsham. Coffin bearers: Messrs. J Baker, A Kroker, W Hutchinson, W Hobbs, A Jolley and Lex Anselmi.
