Introduction
to Religion and Churches by Ralph Terry
Even though we did not receive histories of a few active churches of
Coleman County, for inclusion in Coleman County and Its People,
in 1983, we attempted to cover all that could be located with photographs.
Over the years, Coleman County has seen many churches come and go with
the population shifts ... a shame that more was not written down about
their organization and history.
The religious life during the frontier days was by no means neglected.
Circuit riding preachers made their appearance with the first settlers
and carried on their work as best they could. With no churches, services
were conducted in the homes of the settlers to which the whole neighborhood
came upon the announcement of the visit of some minister. The first
churches were began in the late 1870’s in Coleman, with a Baptist Church
about the same time near Trickham. Santa Anna churches first began
in the early 1880’s.
