One of the drawbacks with the descendancy approach to showing genealogical data on the web is that it's not always terribly easy to follow the line of descent for the more distant folks. I hope that the presentation was not too confusing. The STANFILL GEDCom from which this descendancy was produced does not show any dates for this Sarah Stanfield; however, it does show her as the dau of John Stanfield/Stanfill Sr (1733-1784) and Mary Sherrod. I would estimate her date of birth as approximately 1770 based on better data on some of her siblings.

The descendants of Jesse STANFIELD & Hester REED have been fairly well documented by their direct descendants. They had 7 children all born in Melrose twp, Clark co,IL. Levi STANFIELD, whom you mentioned was their youngest, born ca.1876. Jesse STANFIELD (c1824-c1907) had 3 children by his 1st wife Barbara MEDSKER & 4 children by his 2nd wife Hester REED. He was the son of John STANFIELD (1790-1874) & Hannah BEAMS. According to the accepted schema, John STANFIELD was a descendant of the Whitley co,KY branch of the "Cavalier" Stanfield Line of VA. There is no direct relationship with the people you are interested in. Ellis STANFIELD was born ca.1878, York twp, Clark co,IL, son of Moses STANFIELD (1852-1942) & Ann WILLARD, who were married about 1876 and are residing with her mother Lucinda WILLARD in the Census of 1880. Response: I have the following Census Finding which you may find interesting: Laurel was the county immediately North of Whitley and was erected in 1825 from Whitley, Knox, Clay, and Rockcastle counties. If the 1813 date from the IGI is correct, then she would have been born in Knox co,KY as is the case for Sampson's children born between 1804-1818. OTOH if born in 1820 as your info and Census finding indicates, then she would have been born in Whitley co,KY. Assuming that the Census finding represents the right people, it would appear that she was married in ca.1837 probably Whitley co,KY. This is all knowledgable conjecture, as far as I am aware no proof exists for any of these connections.
Sampson Stanfield came from Anson co,NC in about 1804 and settled in that part of Knox co,KY that became Whitley co,KY when that county was erected in 1818. The information in the Mormon IGI gives Rachel's DOB as ca.1813 and all researchers who have based their work on the IGI entries have followed this. I had not previously been aware of a marriage for this dau of Sampson although I now see that 5-6 researchers show her as wife of Darling Jones on WorldConnect. My feeling is that this is largely "follow the leader" and represents no original research. None shows a Marriage date.

As a foot-note to the identity of Phoebe Stanfield, I have found conflicting Parentage for her Husband, Samuel M. Graham. Your Info has one option and the other I have found list a Charles Graham and Elizabeth McCallum as his parents. This would explain his middle name. When I first starting searching all the info I had was Samuel "Mac" Graham, so the second set of parents fit the profile better. I know this isn't the Stanfield line directly, but any input would be helpful.

I believe this is the same James STANFIELD, who served as a bondsman for Mason STANFIELD and Elizabeth KIDD who married 27 April 1806 in Surry co, NC. I also think they are brothers, possibly sons of John, but have no proof. This is the only Mason I have found during this time period with the exception of Mason's son Mason in Pickens co,GA. The only problem I see is that if these are James and Nancy's children they were born late in their marriage (1806), but brothers named their sons after their fathers and brothers.
Just a few houses from James lives a Davison STANFIELD 21, Farmer, bn TN, Jane 20, and Timothy 1.

STANFIELD, b. 2 Feb 1851 Brown co, IL. Her father was James M. STANFIELD, b. about 1830 in Haywood co, TN, and died about 1871/74 in Coffee co, KS. Margaret's mother was his first wife Elizabeth HULLETT, dau of Charles and Lucy T. R. HULLETT. They married 20 May 1847 in Brown co, IL. About 1858 they went by wagon train to Kansas with children, Margaret E, Alice (b. 5 Nov. 1855 d. 26 Jan 1936, m. Charles E. FOLLMER 11 Oct 1873, Wilson co, KS), Stephen A. Douglas STANFIELD, (b. 1 Feb 1857, Brown co, IL, d. 17 Nov 1921, Wilson co, KS, m. Clara Theresa PEARMAN 14 Feb 1875 Wilson co, KS), another daughter, Sarah was born 2 Aug 1860 in Burlington, Coffee co, KS (d. 21 Mar 1934, m. Hugh ARBUCKLE in Wilson co, KS). James' wife, Elizabeth died about 1861 and he married (2) Mrs. Sarah Jane TAYLOR, 30 May 1868 in KS. They had a daughter Ida.
I found a William STANFIELD in the 1830 Haywood co, TN census, so suspect he is the father of James, but have no proof nor the name of his wife. The uncle of Margaret was named Elijah STANFIELD, and after the re-marriage of James, the older Stanfield lived with their uncle Elijah in Wilson co, KS.
I think William STANFIELD's wife's name was Elizabeth., I suspect possibly could be Elizabeth HISE from Greene co, TN. Other family names were Samuel J, Elijah, Henry H, Thomas C, William E, John P, Sarah A, and Martha, all of whom were in Brown co,IL at the same time as James M. STANFIELD
Margaret was an enigma in itself. My mother-in-law told me that she had been married 4 times, and my husband and I finally found all 4 marriages in IL, the last to Henry COLCLASURE, produced one son, my husband's grandfather, Charles. I have pictures of Margaret and her sisters taken in their old age in Kansas, also pictures of Margaret and Charles when he was a child about 6, plus another picture of her holding my husband, a baby about 4-6 months old.
I am very interested in trying to find the ancestors of James, and any help you could provide would gladly be appreciated. I will be more than happy to exchange the information I have on Margaret.
Response: I am unable to positively identify your people in my database, although there are some tantalizing possibilities. There is an Elijah STANFIELD b.ca.1814 in Greene co,TN, son of Samuel STANFIELD (c1788-c1835) & Hannah SMITH. This Elijah came to Vermilion MM in Illinois with his parents in 1828 and settled in Edgar County. Elijah married Angeline CLARK 23 Oct 1845 in Edgar co,IL. Unfortunately there is no mention of William as a son of Samuel & Hannah in the Quaker records. Of course that might not signify if he came to Western Illinois and not to Eastern Illinois with rest of that family. By virtue of your people being in Western Tennessee in 1830, I would surmise that they came North to Western Illinois on the Mississippi River rather than the inland migration path taken by the people from Eastern Tennessee.

I disagree. The "unknown" parent of William Stanfield, b.1792 likely died before 1805. In 1806 the Quaker Thomas Stanfield Sr removed to Ohio as a part of the general Quaker movement to separate themselves physically from the influences of Slavery. I think it highly unlikely that his son would have gone in the opposite direction.

Some of the question's answers are obvious ones; others are more detailed and harder to prove and will be hard to accept, but I am still in need of and would appreciate your input. I will have an answer for every question that has been asked of us and the proof, if we know the answer. That's how we work.
Thank you all very much again and I hope to be hearing from you soon.

Thomas Harrison Lewis ------- NAME: Thomas Harrison Lewis EMAIL:JALJAL@AOL.COM SURNAMES: STANFIELD DATE: Sunday, November 30, 2003 QRYTEXT:Can anyone tell me how to find out if any STANFIELDs were pirates working for the King or Queen of England. I have found that Robert was a sailor in the 1680's and Samuel was a master of a ship called the Hopewell before 1658. I believe that the early Non-Quakers may have been involved in robbery and pirates on the North Carolina coast preying on the Spanish ships.

Cecil Abram Stanfield (1895-1972) of Tulsa,OK, the grandfather of our friend Rowland Stanfield, in correspondence with Stanfield researcher Goldie Hieronymous, in speaking of his own great-grandfather Jonathan Stanfield (1814-1903) said that there was a family tradition that he was the offspring of BOTH major Stanfield lines and was therefore the descendant of a Quaker and a Pirate. Current thinking is that Jonathan was the illegitimate son of Quaker Mary Stanfield (1797- ? ) who later married Abraham Starr in Greene co,OH in 1818. ------- NAME: Angelia Lively EMAIL:firstname.lastname@example.org SURNAMES: JOHNSTON, STANFIELD DATE: Friday, June 1, 2001 QRYTEXT:I was reading some of the querys and came across one where the responses was the information needed was found in your databases. Response: Beyond a certain point in English history, only the pedigrees of the wealthy can be proven. The very simplest explanation is that the inheritance of wealth depended upon proof of descent. The Stansfield family was not an immense family but it was large. For every 100 men named Stansfield there was one very wealthy guy, 6 middle class guys, and 93 real poor guys. The eldest son of the real wealthy guy was also a real wealthy guy while his younger sons became middle-class. The eldest son or two of the middle-class guys stayed middle-class while the younger sons became real poor guys. All of the sons of the real poor guys remained real poor guys. Every once in awhile an exceptional individual, born a real poor guy, would succeed in making it into the middle-class. The descent of the real wealthy guy is well documented. The descent of the middle class guys can be carried back some with quite a bit of work. For the real poor guys, forget it. At some point in going back you run into the problem of trying to ascertain which of the 30 John Stansfields living in Yorkshire is your guy. You may know who they all married from the Parish Register, but which John Stansfield is the parent of your person? Without a Will, the connection cannot be made. Guess what -- none of the 93 real poor guys made wills because there was no need to do so. At present we have not been able to find any proof of the parentage of Samuel Stansfield (ca.1644-1699). Although such proof may be merely awaiting being found, it is just as likely that it does not exist. Until such time as it is found, all that can really be said is that he was probably born one of those 93 real poor guys and is related to the real rich guy but we are not quite sure how.
The page at the Stanfield Family website entitled
Ancient History of the Stansfield Family in England
is taken from Oscar C Stanfield's book History of a Stanfield Family and has been independently confirmed by more recent research to represent ONE of the primary Stansfield Main Lines in England. Much of this descent has been documented by the College of Heralds as various wealthy branches of the Family were armigerous. It has been generally accepted that all people of English descent bearing the name Stansfield, Stanfield, Standfield, Stanfill, Stanphill, or other obvious variation, are the descendants of Wyon Marion, 1st Lord of Stansfield. Being able to prove that assertion is another matter.

I have posted your query to the Stanfield Group. I doubt if anyone has more info on the question you raise than I do, so I thought I would respond. As indicated on the page in question at the Stanfield website, the source for the info is History of a Stanfield Family, by Oscar C Stanfield, Cheyenne,WY, 1961. I have no idea where Oscar got his material as he really did not cite individual references. It appears, however, that the full descent from the time of the Conquest may have been found by him in History of Stansfield-Crompton of Esholt Hall which he mentions as one source for part of this material. He also cites a Yorkshire history for part of the material. In neither case does he give an author, publisher, or publication date.

Thomas died 1851. Naomi died 1855. Notes from elderly family. The Richards, along with the Stanfields and Quakers lived in KY, then PA, then Ohio. Thomas emigrated from Wales as a small boy. I do not know his birthdate, but 1850 census states he was 30. Do not know who gave the 1850 census information as they spelled Naomi's name wrong and "unknown" where Thomas was born. Addl info - Grandmother Stanfield kept Tecumsah. Stanfield settled a section of land in Ohio. Had saw mill; made shingles. When the Stanfield's moved to Ohio they settled among the Indians. The deed for the land was stamped on buckskin; had 640 acres. They paid the Indians for the land since they were Quakers. Am trying to locate the movement of the Stanfield family. Thomas and Margaret REAMS STANFIELD (Naomi's parents) were married in Ohio 1814, but what towns did they live in KY and PA. If I can locate that info I may be able to trace the movement of the Richards. Would anyone have a picture of the Thomas STANFIELD family.? Response: We have a Family Group Sheet on the website for Naomi Stanfield's parents at:
Thomas Stanfield Jr (1790-1838)
Much of the data on this page is based on the correspondence & research of Oscar Cyrus Stanfield (1878-1953) who was the original author of the Stanfield History. From what he says in his book, he was in correspondence with Stanfield descendants in OH. All indications are that the Stanfields came directly to Champaign co,OH (later Logan co) from Greene co,TN, in 1806.
