From Gwyn BARKER: William served in the Civil War as a Private in M Company, 9th MO Cavalry. He served from Sep 1863 until Jul 1865. His records say that at age 37 he was 5 feet 7 inches tall and had a dark complexion, black hair, and blue eyes.

Craig Leader, 20 Jan 1950: "30 years ago; William ASHER one of the old residents of Bigelow died at his home in that city last Friday, Jan 19, 1920."
Oregon Sentinel, 2 Mar 1917: "William ASHER of Bigelow; William was born on Schaeffer farm South of Forest City on 27 Jul 1846. He was the son of Eli ASHER who came to Holt Co from Morgan Co, IN in 1843. Lived in Holt Co 70 years. He served in Union Army, Company M, 9th MO Cavalry. William was married 3 times. First time to Miss Lucy F. ADAMS of Callaway Co, 19 Sep 1880; no children by first marriage. By the second marriage he had 3 girls, with 2 still living: Mrs. W. L. PACKETT of Pawnee City, NE and Mrs. Walter TRIPLETT, Stillwell, OK. By his third and present wife, there were 8 children; 2 are dead. Living are Emmett of Lincoln, NE; Mrs. C. E. JONES and Mrs. E. E. BOOK of Napier; Lee of Bigelow; Robtert of Bigelow and Tommy. Mr. ASHER has 5 sisters. 4 live in Craig. The eldest, Mrs. Marion ODELL, now 82, was born in Morgan Co, IN; Mrs. Jack SCOTT; Mrs. Elizabeth GALLOP; Mrs. Maggie SWEETWOOD and Mrs. Eliza ODELL of Auburn, NE. 22 grandchildren." MO Death Certificate #26519: Lucy Frances ASHER, born 13 Jun 1861, Calloway Co, MO; died 10 Aug 1930, Bigelow, Holt, MO. She was 69 years, 1 month, and 26 days of age at her death from Carcinoma of the stomach. She was the widow of William Blevins ASHER. Her parents were John Quincy ADAMS (of KY) and Amanda BASINGER (of Calloway Co, MO). The informant listed was Mrs. Earl Book, Bigelow. Lucy was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mound City, on 12 Aug 1930, by W. H. Crawford, of Mound City.
