1840 CENSUS, Morgan Co, IN, #126: John is listed as a male 20-30; with him are a female 15-20; a female 20-30; and a female 40-50. Does this represent John, his wife, Mary "Polly", mother-in-law and perhaps a sister-in-law? (John is living next to Dilion ASHER, father of Eli ASHER, in 1840 at the time the census was taken.)
1850 CENSUS, 38th District, Holt Co, MO: 35 years, born KY, no occupation, $300, Living with spouse, Rebecca and 7 children.

John and his wife, Rebecca, sold property to William POTTER, 20 Aug 1850, Holt Co, MO.

John POTTER died intestate. James Riggs was named administer of John's estate, with the first annual statement to the Court in the August term, 1855: $599.05 from sales, additional inventory $181.95, bills paid $107.34, leaving balance in estate of $653.66. Eli ASHER (his brother-in-law) was appointed as guardian of John's minor daughters, Lucinda and Elizabeth. (Inventory filed 19 Jan 1858). William McCRORY was curator for John's minor son, William R. Rebecca POTTER, received $200 on 18 Jul 1854 as the widow of John POTTER. (She signed with an X.) The 4 children each received $139.18 plus 1/4 of John's property (subject to the widow's dower, which apparently was the $200). The final settlement for Francis M. was 2 Nov 1857; final settlement for William R. was also 2 Nov 1857; final settlement for Lucinda was 10 May 1859 ($139.18 signed for by Lucinda and her spouse, Jasper CORN) Elizabeth's share was taken up with bills for her care (submitted by Eli ASHER). John POTTER had sold land to: William and Susanah McCRORY (39.89 Acres; deed); William and Martha Jane POTTER (39.76 Acres; deed); P. M. Chesney (59.15 Acres; deed) There was "One note of hand" dated 11 Apr 1850, due 1 May 1852 (to bear interest) for $112 against Amos HALLSA and Howard Runnels. It was crossed out. John POTTER had no money on hand at the time of his death.
