Obituary, The Democrat-Courier Craig, MO, Friday, 16 Dec 1898: "Mrs. Sarah JACKSON died at the home of F. M. ODELL on Saturday last, and was buried at Guilliams Cemetery on Tuesday. The funeral services were conducted by Elder Cies, of the Christian Church, of which she has been a member for 40 years. Mrs. JACKSON was born in Clay Co, KY, 5 May 1820, and at the time of her death was 78 years 7 months 8 days of age. She was twice married, the first time to Eli ASHER, who died some 18 years ago. She then married Jacob JACKSON who survives her. She was the mother of 9 children, all but one of whom survive her. They are Mrs. Marion ODELL, Mrs. Jack SCOTT, Mrs. Francis ODELL, of NE, Mrs. George GALLOP and Messrs. William, Robert and James ASHER. Deceased was a good Christian woman, and in her death a kind and affectionate mother is mourned by those whom she has preceeded to the better land, but not as those without hope."

Democrat-Courier Craig, MO, 23 Dec 1898: LOCAL HAPPENINGS--"In our write-up of the obituary of the old lady JACKSON, last week, we unintentionally left out the name of one of the daughters, Mrs. Judd ODELL, of this city. It was furnished us but by some of those hooks or crooks that cannot be explained, was omitted from the write-up."

1860 CENSUS, Holt Co, MO, Dallas Twp, Rush Bottom P.O., #1022: 40 years, born KY, farmer, $800, $780. Living with spouse, Sarah and 7 children.
1870 CENSUS, Dallas Twp, North Point P.O., Holt Co, MO, # 198/190: 50 years, born KY, farmer, $500, $500, cannot read and write, may be deaf and dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic. Living with spouse, Sarah and 4 children.
1876 CENSUS, Holt Co, MO, page 242: Eli is over 45 years. He is living with his wife, Sarah, and son (James A.). Eli owns 2 horses, 5 cattle, 12 hogs and has 500 bushels of corn. He cannot read or write.
1880 CENSUS, Holt Co, MO, Union Twp, #149: 60 years, born KY, father born IRE, mother born KY, farmer, cannot read or write. Living with spouse, Sarah, son and adopted daughter, Lillie BROWN.

1877 Holt Co Atlas, Dallas Twp, Rush Bottom P. O., Twp 61, Range 40, Section 2: States that Eli ASHER was born in Clay Co, KY, and came to Holt Co. in 1841. He is a farmer and stock raiser.

Gwyn BARKER has: death certificate of daughter, copy of marriage record from Morgan Co, IN, records from Coleman-David Funeral Home, grave location and photo, family Bible records of Eli's birth, copies of several maps showing location of property, copies of deeds.
Also from Gwyn: Holt Co. News, Issue 1, Volume 1; 1 Jul 1857, 10 Jul 1857, and 23 Oct 1857, letters for Eli ASHER at Post Office, Oregon, MO. Final Statement notice for estate of John POTTER. 3 Aug 1857. Eli was also one of 3 appraisers for Edwin ODELL estate, Nov 1859.

Deeds, Holt Co, MO: 24 Feb 1855 from Jacob Fitzwater and wife; 11 Apr 1853 from John Anderson and wife. Also sold land to William B. ASHER, 25 Apr 1859; 11 Jul 1878 from William Williams and wife. Gwyn has copy of deed dated 9 Nov 1870 where Eli and Sarah give share of his father's estate to Esther ASHER (this is to property in Martinsville, Morgan Co, IN.) This states that he is the son of Dillon ASHER.

Eli was named guardian of Lucinda and Elizabeth POTTER, minor daughters of John POTTER, deceased. (Have copy.) John was Eli's brother-in-law.

From Gone Home, page 43: Eli put up a grist mill on the "old Ed Vest farm".
Craig, volume 1, page 252: Mound City Globe, 22 Nov 1877, "Eli and Robert ASHER, of Rush Bottom, were in town last Tuesday, attending a law suit."
