ACKLEY, 3 Mar 1890, Emmett, San Benito, CA 1900 CENSUS, Corning Twp, Tehama, CA: born Apr 1876, 24 years, born UT, parents birth places Unknown, newlywed, 4 children born and 3 living, can read, write and speak English. Living in in-laws' home with spouse, Henry and children (Agnes and Charles ACKLEY and "Baby" STEVENS.). 1910 CENSUS, Red Bluff, Tehama, CA: 34 years, born UT, father born FRANCE, mother born U S, married 6 years, 3 children born and 3 living. Living with spouse, Harvey HALSEY and 3 children. 1920 CENSUS, Chico, Butte Co, CA, ED 10: "Gertrude E. HALSEY", 43 years, born UT, widow, rents, building janitor. Living with daughter (Alice M. HALSEY)and son (Harry D. HALSEY). 1930 CENSUS, Chico Twp, Butte Co, CA, ED 12: "Stella RICE", head of household, 53 years, born UT, parents born US, married at 14 years, rents for $10, no occupation. Living with Stella are her daughter(Alice BRUCE); son (Harry DURETTE); and grandson (Harold KELLY). From Elwood HALSEY: known as "Aunt Gertie". Kay DURETTE said she was dark haired, 'built like a man' and rolled her own cigarettes. Gertrude's father was listed as "Charles DURETTE" on her death certificate. On her marriage license to Harvey, she gave her name as "Gertie ACKLEY" and said she was born in NV. June 2000: could find no record of marriage or divorce from Henry STEVENS in Tehama Co. Court House, Red Bluff, CA. Her father, Henry DURETT, gives her birth date as 16 Apr 1876 on his pension papers. ACKLEY marriage from Bud Paige: 3 Mar 1890, Emmett, San Benito Co, CA; witness: G. W. Call. Both bride and groom were said to be from Emmett. Sylvester, age 35, and Gertrude shown as age 17 or 18 (actually, she was not quite 14 years of age). (Marriage Records of San Benito Co, CA; Book 2, page 155.) Tehama Co. took possession of the 5 youngest children that were living with Gertrude and Harvey in 1914 because of poor circumstances. Gertrude signed them over for adoption, stating that Harvey's whereabouts was unknown.. Her daughter, Alice, ran away and rejoined her mother; Gertrude took back the baby, Harry, and raised him to manhood. Marion was adopted from the Childrens' Home Society in 1914 by George Marcus and Belle LATIMER. Nothing more is known about the two youngest children, James Marcus and Dorothy. (Harvey's sister, Lydia, had wanted to keep all the children, but she already had 5 of her own, so it was not possible.) Gertrude sued Harvey for divorce, 5 Sep 1919, Butte Co, CA: suit #807R. Obituary, 29 Mar 1937, Chico Enterprise Record: "Mrs. Gertrude Estella RICE Called by Death: Mrs. Gertrude Estella RICE, 60, a native of Ogden, Utah, and a resident here for the last 3 months died last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. A. BAILEY, 3825-5th Ave. Survivors aside from the local daughter include the widower, John D. RICE, another daughter, Mrs. Clyde LACEY of Eureka, 3 sons, Charles S. ACKLEY of Nelson, George STEVENS of Winters and Harry DURETTE of Sacramento and 3 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon in the chapel of Westfall Funeral Home, the Reverend L. G. Morony of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Chico Cemetery" (Buried Section 26, lot 127.) Harvey and Gertrude had the following children:
