ELISHA / ELIJAH BAKER
OF SHELBY COUNTY,
INDIANA
Elisha Baker was born ca. 1800/1809. He was Sheriff of Shelby
County, Indiana from 1832 through 1836.
He married Nancy Mayhew on 6 January 1831 in Shelby County,
Indiana. She was a daughter of Elisha and Abigail (Tibbetts) Mayhew. Nancy
Nichols Mayhew was born 6/11/1809 in Levant, Penobscot County, Maine and died
5/1/1837 in Indiana.
Elisha Baker bought land from the U.S.A. in 1829 in the following
location in Shelby County.

He is listed on the tax list in 1842 in Addison Township with 298
acres.
Elisha and Nancy N. Baker are listed in Deed Book D
(1833-34).
Elisha is listed in Deed Book E
(1834-35).
He is called the stepson of Andrew Baker in Andrew's 1835 will in
Monroe Co., MO:
"Now my will desire is that the balance of my
children towit, Moses, Elizabeth, Phebe and Elijah Baker my step son who now
resides in Shelby County and the state of Indiana shall receive a full equal
share of my estate except for Nancy Snell and Polly Hayden the balance which my
be coming I leave to George Buckhart in trust for them and their children as I
do not want their husbands to have any control over it or any part
thereof."
Though he was called Elijah in the will it was definetly
Elisha - his mother, Phoebe, was living in his (Elisha's) household in Monroe
Co., MO, in 1850. He is shown in both the 1850 and 1860 census of Monroe
Co., MO, born ca 1800. He died 1864-1865 in Monroe Co., MO, and his estate
is of record in that county. He married probably twice after Nancy
Mayhew's death and had five children born between 1844 and 1855 - all born in
Missouri.
His stepfather, Andrew Baker, married Phoebe Collins in
Henry Co., KY, 11 Apr 1802. They were in Henry Co., KY, in 1810 and in
Owen Co., KY, in 1820. By 1830 they had moved to Missouri and were in the
Ralls Co., MO, census. It isn't known if Phoebe was married first to a
Collins, if she had been married to another Baker about 1800 when Elisha was
born or if Elisha's real surname was Collins and he took his step-father's Baker
name.
Some researchers think that Pheobe Baker's maiden name
was Wainscott (Winscott), and that she was a daughter of Isaac Wainscott.
One researcher stated "Isaac Wainscot died and their land (Andrew &
Phoebe's) in Owen Co., Kentucky, seems to have been their share of his
estate. He also signed their (Andrew & Phoebe's) marriage
bond." So, you can see there is probably some connection with John
Baker of Shelby Co., IN, who married a Wainscott. He was a descendant of Moses
Baker.
