Kitt Porter Rose

Kit was born near Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky but lived most of his life in Jackson County, Missouri. According to census records, he was a farmer. Later in life, he became the supervisor of the Jackson County Poor Farm which was built on land donated by Henry W. Younger, his father-in-law.  "Kate" Quantrill, the widow of William Clarke Quantrill was one of the inmates of the Poor Farm. She died there Jan. 9, 1930.

Kitt Rose was a member of William Quantrill's guerrillas, and being married to Emily Younger, was a brother-in-law to the famous Younger Brothers and former Quantrill members, John Jarrette, Richard Hall and George Clayton. He also was close to the James-Younger gang and train robber, Jack "Quail Hunter" Kennedy.

In 1879, the James Gang pulled off the first of two train robberies known as the Glendale robberies. The James Gang, consisting of Jesse James, Dick Liddil, Tucker Basham, Ed Miller, Clarence and Wood Hite and Bill Ryan, was harbored before the robbery at Kitt's house to devise their plan and afterwards they hid out at his home and divided the money. Kitt was indicted on this in 1880, but the charge was later dropped. Police had also pinned Kitt's house as the planning place and hide out for the James Gang during the famous "Blue Cut" train robberies as well. Kitt was quoted as saying that he had many of the outlaws hidden in the brush and bushes of his property at different times when law enforcment, armed "to the teeth", would ride up and ask if he knew their whereabouts. He denied he knew anything.

Once, it was reported, Jesse was sick and needed help getting back to his wife, Zee. He sent a man with a note to Kitt asking to meet him in some woods. Kitt went to these woods and found Jesse laying on his back with a gun in each hand and feeling poorly. Jesse asked him for $40 and a horse to ride back on. Kitt obliged and fetched him what he needed. Not too long after that, another stranger appeared at Kitt's home with a note and the horse Kitt lent Jesse. The note was to Kitt from Jesse with $40 and a thanks for his help.

Jack "Quail Hunter" Kennedy was a notorious train robber that was close to the Rose family all his life. In 1898, Kennedy and James Redmond robbed a store at 17th and Campbell in Kansas City, and shot the woman running the store. Before the woman fell, she got off a shot that hit Redmond in the mouth. Immediately afterwards, riding in a buggy rented from Ed Eylar's livery stable and saddles, the two found refuge at the Rose home where Redmond was patched up by Kitt and his servant, William Handy. Police arrested Kitt and brought in Emily and several of the Rose children for questioning in the police interrogation room. The entire Rose family denied knowing anything including Kitt's daughter, Henrietta who was a sweetheart of Kennedy's.

(some of the above information is from the Elmwood Cemetery site)

Kitt and Emma had a rocky marriage. They divorced, had it voided, then divorced again.

The Nevada Daily Mail, 11/17/1893 pg. 2
Missouri and Missourians
“By request of the plaintiff Judge Gibson set aside Thursday the divorce granted Mrs.
Emma Rose of Independence last September, separating her from her husband ex-superintendent Kit Rose of the Jackson county poor farm.  Mrs. Rose said they had settled their differences and desired to again become husband and wife.  Judge Gibson expressed himself as being gratified and complied with the request.  Mrs. Rose is a sister of the Younger boys who gained fame as outlaws.”

06/26/1894 pg. 2
She Shot at Her Husband
“”Mrs. Kit Rose of Jackson county has made a record for herself by shooting at her
husband.  The man ran and she attempted to get another shot at him but failed.  Mrs. Rose says her husband has treated her badly, and she could endure it no longer.  She is sister of the Youngers, now in the Minnesota penitentiary, and Rose was in charge of the Jackson county poor farm.  Both are known in the county.”

They were back together in 1900, but divorced again. After the second divorce, she remarried to Algen S. Leach in 1905. Emily died in 1907 in General Hospital, reportedly from injuries sustained in a train wreck. Kitt died in 1919. Both Kitt and Emily are buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
