Charles A. Longacre

The large Longacre family of Johnson County, Missouri came from Tennessee, and before that, Virginia. When the Civil War came along, nearly all of the men joined the Confederate army.  Many of them served in one unit after another until the War's end. Several of them died in the War.
Charles was no exception, except that he also rode with Quantrill's Guerrillas.

Charles was born in Roane County, Tennessee and his family took him to Kingsville, Johnson County, Missouri at a young age.  About 1859, he married a girl named Eliza and they were living in Jackson, Johnson  County in 1860. The area had already felt the brunt of Kansas Jayhawker violence for many years and the raids increased when the Civil War broke out.  Along with many other young Southern men in the area, Charles joined Quantrill's Guerrillas.

After the battle at Pleasant Hill, Missouri on July 11, 1862 Union troops found Quantrill's muster roll on

one of the dead guerrillas.  C. A. Longacre was listed on the roll of 91 names. Six days later, about 10 miles from where the Muster Roll was found, the father and a brother of Charles were murdered by Jayhawkers. The killer, Lt. Levi copeland was later executed by Quantrill, himself, for the double murder.

Confederate Records show that Charles A. Longacre lived in Kingsville, Johnson County, Missouri. He enlisted in 1862 in Johnson Co., in the 16th Mo., Parson's Brigade, Capt. D.M. Raker's Co. D, commanded by Col. Vard Cockerell. He was a private and was in the Battle of Lone Jack. He was not wounded nor taken prisoner. He transferred to another branch of service 23 Nov. 1862 . Ref.: Capt. Raker's Roster.

Charles also served in the following Confederate units:
1. Quantrill's Guerrillas
2. 3rd Missouri Infantry
3. Lewis' 16th Regiment Infantry Volunteers CSA
4. Co. C, Pindall's Sharp Shooters Missouri Volunteers (Deserted at the Arkansas River, 17 January, 1863)

In 1870, he lived in Lamar, Barton County.  About 1876, his wife died and he remarried to Missouri Ann Burris, the widow of Job Lloyd Bouse in 1877. They can be found in 1880 in Webb City, Jasper County, Missouri.

In 1890, Charles attended a Confederate Reunion in Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri and gave his residence as Carthage, Missouri.

By 1900 Charles was living with daughter Nancy Anna and husband, Henry Clifford, in Benton County, Arkansas.
He is listed as age 61 and widowed.

Charles and Missouri went from Carthage, Mo. to Arkansas, probably Benton Co., after 1890.

They seem to have moved back and forth between Arkansas and Coffey Co., KS 1890-1900.

In 1900 he's living with a married daughter in AR and says he's a widower.

Missouri is living on a farm in Coffey Co., KS alone and says she's married. She says she has had 12 children. She seems to also be counting step children.

Charles was back in Burlington, Coffey Co. with her when she died in 1905 and still there in 1907.

There is an estate record for her, but not for him.

He signed his rights to the farm over to one of her Bouse sons for a small fee.

No trace of him in 1910 anywhere.

ANDREW J. LONGACRE

Farmer Section 5, Post-office, Milo

A life of honest, steady and not unsuccessful efforts sums up in a word the active career of the subject of this sketch - a man whose only occupation has been that of farming. Very naturally, therefore, he is conceded to have an intimate knowledge of this calling and to apply it in the right direction. Born in Rowan County, Tenn., September 16, 1829, he was the son of Benjamin and Judith (Perkins) Longacre, the former a tanner by trade and of Virginia nativity, and the latter a native of Tennessee. Andrew J. was the youngest of nine children in his parents' family. When seven years old be accompanied his father to Johnson county, Mo., and there made his home for a number of years, or until coming to this county in 1857. Here he has since remained, closely connected with farming and kindred pursuits. His place numbers some 200 acres of land, and while perhaps not as large as some tracts in the county, Mr. Longacre very properly considers that labor spent on an ordinary farm in a thorough manner will produce greater results than the same amount of labor bestowed on one twice the size. He has done well in his operations and the future promises encouraging results for him. In November, 1849, Mr. Longacre was married to Miss Polly B. Shumate, who was born in Lafayette County, Mo. She died April 9, 1864, leaving three children who are now living: William C., Benjamin H. and Balis A. In February, 1865, his second marriage occurred, when Miss Sarah F. Caton, of Carroll County, Mo., became his wife. She was the daughter of Hugh M: and Nancy Ann (Harvey) Caton, frequent mention of whom is made elsewhere in the present volume. To Mr. and Mrs. Longacre a family of four children have been given: Hugh L., Precious T., John J. and Emma May. Mr. L. is a member of the M. E. Church South and also belongs to the A. F. and A. M.

NOTE:

Most researchers give his middle name as Anderson. I've found no record listing his middle name.  A grandson was named Charles Austin Longacre so I suspect that was his name too.

-------

After the battle at Pleasant Hill, Missouri on July 11, 1862 Union troops found Quantrill's muster roll on one of the dead guerrillas. C. A. Longacre was listed on the roll.

Six days later, about 10 miles from where the Muster Roll was found, the father and a brother of Charles were murdered by Jayhawkers. The following week, Charles went to Holden in Johnson Co., and joined the Regular Confederate Army.

Obituary

Martha Jane Longacre, Daughter of Benjamin Isham Longacre and Nancy Tucker Longacre was born in April 15, 1850 and died March 24, 1932.

Fourscore Years in a Community.

Mrs. Martha Baker died at her home near Kingsville Thursday afternoon after an extended period of invalidism.  The funeral was held Saturday afternoon in the Kingsville Baptist church which was filled with sorrowing friends.  The services were in charge of Rev. E. W. Chewning, and burial was made in Bluff Springs cemetery.

Martha Jane Longacre, daughter of Benjamin Isham Longacre and Nancy Tucker Longacre, was born near Kingsville April 15, 1850, and spent her life in the immediate vicinity.  She was the eldest daughter in a family of four.  March 27, 1878 she was married to Edward Baker.  To them were born three sons.  All of whom survive.  Roy Thomas Baker of Detroit Mich., whose illness prevented him from attending the funeral: Frank Granger Baker of Kingsville: and Edward Longacre Baker of St. Louis.  She is survived by three granddaughters.  One by each son.

In early life Mrs. Baker became a member of the Kingsville Baptist church and continued as active and faithful worker in her Masters vineyard until old age and infirmity prevented.  She loved her church and to it gave the best of her life's efforts.  Her last year of invalidism did not dim her faith.  Her many good deeds will live long in the memory of those she served.  A veritable mother in Israel has gone to her well earned reward.

Charles Austin Longacre - Hinton, Oklahoma   Occupation: Barber  He's single.

------------------

1930 United States Federal Census > Oklahoma > Noble > Perry > District 18

--------------------

"Charlie" Longacre operated the White House Barber Shop at 608 Cedar Street in Perry for many years. Charlie Longacre was a tall, slender and friendly man. For years he served as secretary of the Noble county election board. He had a thorough knowledge of the law governing elections and he invariably interpreted it correctly. Reporters from the local press who were stationed at the office on election night appreciated his courtesy and understanding very much. But the election board was just a kind of avocation for Longacre. He also was an ace barber.

The White House Barber Shop had three chairs, sometimes four, and they were usually occupied by customers. In addition to Mr. Longacre, who had the shop's second chair, Frank Taylor was the first chair barber and Ira Stanly had the third chair. Other barbers worked in the shop from time to time, but those three must have had the longest tenures. An enterprising young man named Bill Irvin also operated a shoe shine stand in the shop. He left Perry as a youth but returned years later for Mr. Longacre's funeral.

Dixie Nicewander was Mr. Longacre's niece, and she also helped Ermine Marchbanks when a used clothing store later occupied the entire Gem Cafe and White House Barber Shop building.
