Descendants of Thomas Benjamin Sumerfield

Thomas Benjamin Sumerfield married in 1818 at St. Mary, Whitechapel (or St. Mary, Lambeth), London, England, Sarah Terrey 8.

The 1849 marriage record of daughter Sarah to Augustus Raymond gave the occupation of her father as coal merchant. He and James Eversfield, coal dealers, jointly held a Sun Fire Office insurance policy dated 30 Dec 1824 on premises at 9 Whites Row, Spitalfields - an area in the Borough of Tower Hamlets in the East End of London 9. In April 1829 there was an advertisement in "The Times" that the partnership trading a Sumerfield & Co., coal-merchants, of Vauxhall-Wharf, Lambeth had been disolved 10. Likely it was the same partnership as Thomas Benjamin's first four children were baptised at St. Mary, Lambeth. The last four of his ten known children were baptised at Oystermouth, located 6 kilometres from Swansea - the second largest city in Wales. The seaport there was developed in the 18th century to export the coal mined in South Wales. The move by Thomas to the area in the late 1820s was presumably in order to deal directly with the smaller colliery owners who did not sell their output to coal merchants through a factor.
He was possibly born in Wales as the 1841 Wales census had instances of the name variant of Summerfield in Swansea and nearby areas. Whether he remained based in the Swansea area after the birth of his last child there ca. 1833 is not known. It is possible his wife died and he remarried in London as the marriage indexes have a March Qtr. 1840 (v.3, p.126) Islington registered marriage of a Thomas Benjamin Sumerfield. Thomas Sumerfield deaths noted in the indexes available in 2008 were - Thomas Sumerfield reg. Mar. Qtr. 1848 at Chorlton near Manchester (V. 20, p. 239) and a Thomas William Sumerfield, aged 76, in Dec. Qtr. 1873 reg. Camberwell (V. 1d, p. 469) who may have been a brother.

Children of Thomas Benjamin Sumerfield & Sarah were: 1
     1.   i.     Thomas Darlington Sumerfield
     2.  ii.     Benjamin Terrey Sumerfield
     3.  iii.    Margaret Terrey Sumerfield
     4.  iv.    Edward Terrey Sumerfield
     5.  v.     Sarah Terrey Sumerfield
     6.  vi.    Rebecca Sumerfield
     7.  vii.   Elizabeth Darlington Sumerfield
     8. viii.   Amelia Ann Sumerfield
     9.  ix.    Edith T Sumerfield
    10.  x.    Ellen Terrey Sumerfield

SECOND GENERATION

1.  Thomas Darlington Sumerfield chr. 16 Jun 1819 1 St. Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, England.

2.   Benjamin Terrey Sumerfield chr. 28 Feb 1821 1 St. Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, England.

3.   Margaret Terrey Sumerfield chr. 24 Jul 1822 1 St. Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, England;  died unmarried in June Qtr. 1898 at a recorded age of 75, registered Chestney (v. 2a, p.25).

At the 1851 census she was residing in Tower Hamlets, Hackney with three of her younger sisters - Rebecca, Edith and Ellen. Also in the household was a border George White, aged 9, and a visitor Sarah Asheley, age 84. As Sarah Asheley was born ca. 1769 she was perhaps one of Margaret's grandmothers who had remarried after the death of a first husband. Both Margaret's and Rebecca's occupations were given as stationers which suggests they had their own retail shop 4.
At the 1861 census Margaret was residing with her sister Elizabeth and husband Edward Power, a chemist, and their family in Walton on Thames in the Chestney district. At the 1871 census she was with sister Rebecca and husband John Cocks, a stationer, and their family at Weybridge in Surrey, and in 1891 at her last census appearance before her death was again listed in the Cocks household in Weybridge 5.
Margaret was one of the witness's at the 1849 marriage in London of her sister Sarah Terrey to Augustus Raymond. Sarah died before 1856 on a voyage to Australia with her husband. Another witness at the 1849 wedding was the groom's only brother Mead Terrey Raymond who had married a decade earlier in 1839 and died in 1866. Margaret must have maintained a close association with his widow Sarah as fifteen years after his death at the 1881 census she was listed as a visitor in the Sarah Raymond household at 9 Waborley Rd., Penge, Surrey.

4.   Edward Terrey Sumerfield (sic) chr. 16 Jul 1823 1 St. Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, England (the IGI bapt. extraction has surname as Summerfield).

5.   Sarah Terrey Sumerfield chr. 28 Jul 1824 1 St. John The Baptist, Croydon, Surrey, England; died between 1849 and 1856 on a voyage to Australia. She married on 1 Feb 1849 2 in St. Giles Parish Church, Camberwell, Surrey, Augustus Raymond, born 1821 at Camberwell, London, Surrey, England, christened 4 Jan 1822 1 at Christ Church, Southwark, London, England; died 18 Jan 1877 3 aged 55 years in Sydney, NSW, Australia, buried in the Old Church of England section of Rookwood Cemetery (section E, row 10),  son of Mead Raymond (1785-1843) and Ann Chapman (1785-1830). There were no issue of the marriage.

6.   Rebecca Sumerfield chr. 16 Nov 1825 1 St. John The Baptist, Croydon, Surrey, England. She married reg. St. Giles district in Sep. Qtr. 1857 (v.1b, p.539), Ambrose John Cocks "John",  born ca 1826 6, Stepney, Middlesex. The marriage is incorrectly indexed as Rebecca Sumerfield to Ambrose John Cock.

At the 1851 census, when they were sharing the same household with two other sisters, the occupations of Rebecca and sister Margaret were given as stationers. Neither Rebecca or husband John Cocks were noted in the 1861 census indexes. All census listings at which they were subsequently noted have her husband's name just as John Cocks so apparently he did not use his first given name of Ambrose. At 1871 census, when residing at Weybridge, Surrey, his occupation was given as stationer. They were at the same address at the 1881 census when his occupation of was still stationer. Their son William's occupation was was given as wood turner and printer as that of the eldest son Edward. That year a Maud Cooke, aged 21 and born Epsom, Surrey, was listed in the household as a visitor. No doubt she was the Maud Jane Cooke who the next year married eldest son Edward. At both the 1871 and 1891 census Rebecca's sister Margaret was listed as as a visitor. In 1891 the occupation of Rebecca's youngest son Walter was given as stationer suggesting he likely carried on the business when his parents retired.

Children of John Cocks and Rebecca Sumerfield were:
     11.   i.     Edward Cocks
     12.   ii.    William Cocks
     13.  iii.    Walter Cocks

7.   Elizabeth Darlington Sumerfield chr. 10 Mar 1829 1 Oystermouth, Glamorgan, Wales.  She married in Sep. Qtr. 1852 (v. 1c, p.396), registered Shoreditch, London, Edward Power, born ca. 1829 7, Shoreditch, London, son of Mary Power.

At the 1861 to 1881 census the family was listed residing at Walton on Thames, Chestney, Surrey. In 1861 the occupation of Elizabeth's husband was given as chemist and sub-postmaster, and her birth place as Oystermouth, South Wales. Both their ages were given as 31, and in addition to her first four children, Elizabeth's sister Margaret also resided in the household with her status given as visitor. In 1871 the household included Edward's mother Mary Power, aged 78 years, with her status given as widow, and birthplace as Bishopgate, Middlesex.
By 1881 the total number of Elizabeth's children listed in the various census's had become eleven born over a twenty-two year period, with only Jane who was aged six in 1871, and Charles aged 4 in 1871, not listed in the household in 1881. Edward's occupation was still chemist and that of his eldest son Thomas H. was dentist. The family unit was not noted in the 1891 and 1901 census indexes. It is understood there are descendants in New Zealand.

Children of Elizabeth Darlington Sumerfield and Edward Power were:
     14.   i.     Mary E. Power
     15.   ii.    Thomas H. Power
     16.   iii.   Ellen Power
     17.   iv.   William Power
     18.   v.    George Power
     19.   vi.   Jane Power
     20.  vii.   Charles Power
     21.  viii.  Florence R. Power
     22.   ix.   Constance Power
     23.   x.    Kate M. Power
     24.   xi.   Frederick J. Power

8.   Amelia Ann Sumerfield Chr. 08 Apr 1830 1 Oystermouth, Glamorgan, Wales (the IGI bapt. extraction has the Summerfield variant spelling); died Jun. Qtr. 1868 (v. 1d. p.371) reg. Camberwell, Surrey. She married in Dec. Qtr. 1855 (v.1c, p.123) reg. West London, Adam Glendining, chr. 27 Apr 1817 Saint Leonard, Colchester, Essex, son of Adam Glendining and Mary Ann Penney.

In the 1861 census her age was given as 29 years and her birth place as Swansea, Glamorganshire, with her husband's age given as 44, and there were four male children aged from 1 to 5 years all listed as born Bermondsey, Surrey. There were likely more children born after 1861. James Quintus was obviously one because of the employment of Latin words for second given names seemingly to denote order of birth. Although doubtful, because a Harriot Hughes Glendining birth was registered at Bermondsey in 1869 after Amelia's death, suggesting another Glendining family in that locality, three possibles noted in the birth indexes were:   (1) Douglas William Glendining born Sep. Qtr. 1863 (v.1d, p.60) reg. Bermondsey. (2) William Henry Glendining born Jun. Qtr. 1865 (v.1d, p.67) reg. Bermondsey; died Jun. Qtr. 1865 (v.2a, p.53) reg. Farnham, Surrey. (3) Lizzy born 1866 (v.1d, p.46) reg. Bermondsey; died Sep. Qtr. 1866 (v.1d, p.55) reg. Bermondsey.
The residence in 1861 was in Maismore Square, Park Road, Camberwell. Her husband Adam's occupation was not clearly readable in the census record but may have been cattle trader & manufacturer. At the 1871 census he was listed, aged 54, without his occupation or a birth place given, with son Halbert aged 11, at 8 Langdale Rd, Peckham, Camberwell. Despite the death index by then no longer being hand written he may well have been the Adam Glendenning (sic) whose death at the given age of 59 years was registered in Sep. Qtr. 1876 (v.1d, p.116) at St. Olave, Southwark as it adjoined Bermondsey and the age of 59 calculates to a 1817 birth.

Children of Amelia Ann Sumerfield and Adam Glendining were:
    25.  i.     Adam Glendining
    26.  ii.    Secundus Glendining
    27.  iii.   William Tertius Glendining
    28.  iv.   Halbert Duartus Glendining
    29.  v.    James Quintus Glendining

9.   Edith T Sumerfield  b. 1831, chr. 26 Jul 1831 1 Oystermouth, Glamorgan, Wales. (IGI chr. extract has surname as Summerfield); d. aged 81 years, Sep. Qtr. 1912 (v.1b, p.383) reg. Hackney. She married in Dec. Qtr. 1856 (v. 1b, p. 678) registered Clerkenwell, Middlesex, Thomas Plester, b. ca. 1829 in Spitalfields, Middlesex, England; d. aged 67, Sep. Qtr. 1896 (v.1b, p.300) reg. Hackney, son of Joseph & Mary Plester.

Suggesting she had a second given name of Terrey is that she was listed as Edith T. at the 1851 census in her sister Margaret's household in Hackney, aged 18 years, born Swansea, Glamorganshire, with the occupation of governess (i.e. a teacher). In the 1871 census her birth place was given as Oystermouth, Glamorgan.
In the 1861 and 1871 census the occupation of her husband Thomas was given as commercial traveller (Berlin Wool).  In 1881 it was commercial traveller and corn dealer and in the 1891 census was just corn dealer. In 1861 they resided in Islington and from 1871 to 1891 in Camberwell. In 1861 the household included an annuitant Ann Ward aged 63 and in 1891 a nephew Albert J McCloud, aged 19 years, who would have been the son of John William McCloud & Eliza Jane Plester who had married at Hackney in June Qtr. 1869, who likeewise to eldest daughter Edith had his occupation given as assistant which is assumed to have meant an assistant to his uncle Thomas in his business as a corn dealer. At the 1901 census daughters Edith 43, Elizabeth 42 & Florence 26 were listed in their mother's household. No BDM record has been noted of their subsequent marriage.

Children of Edith T Sumerfield and Thomas Plester were:
    30.  i.     Edith Plester
    31.  ii.    Elizabeth Sarah Plester
    32.  iii.   Frank Thomas Plester
    33.
iv.   William Alfred Plester
    34.  v.    Florence Beatrice Plester

10.  Ellen Terrey Sumerfield b. ca. 1833 Mumbles, Wales chr. 10 Jul 1833 1 Oystermouth, Glamorgan, Wales (IGI chr. extraction had just Ellen as given name whilst marriage registration had Ellen Terrey). She married in Mar. Qtr. 1860 (v.1d, p.586) registered Camberwell, Richard Tidy, b. ca. 1834, England.

She was listed at the 1851 census in her sister Margaret's household in Hackney, aged 17, born Swansea. In the 1861 census they were in Peckham, with one child Catherine then aged 5 months, and her husband's occupation was given as commission agent. In the 1871 census the family of three were in the household of a Henry Atkins in Epsom in Surrey with their status given as lodgers and Richard's occupation given as corn dealer. They were not noted in any of the three England census indexes from 1881 to 1901. Neither their deaths or the marriage of Catherine were noted in the BDM indexes. The failure to note any record after the 1871 census suggests they may have left England.

Children of Ellen Terrey Sumerfield and Richard Tidy were:
    35.         Catherine Tidy
