Raymond & Chambers farms at Bowraville
fronting North & South Creeks
Following the passage of the Crown Lands
Alienation Act of 1861 (aka Robertson Lands Act) the first
selection on the Nambucca River was in Bowra parish in
September 1864. The first in Buckra Bendinni parish was
not until 1867. The initial rate of conditional purchase
selection on the river was slow with only 111 selections
during the first five years to 1869. In 1869 the rate of
free selection picked up with the 64 for that year
almost doubling the number of the previous year.
On 6 May
1869 Augustus Raymond selected portion 5 (outlined in blue)
of 100 acres (CP 69/1570, Catalogue No. 146) on Capeharrow
Hill with a ¾ mile frontage to North Creek he
named either Hampton Court or Hampden Court.
On 22 July the
same year stepson Angus Chambers selected portion 6 of 40
acres (CP 69/2770, Cat. No. 147). When he died later that
year his selection was allowed to stand in the name of his
brother James. In 1869 James selected portion 21 of 51 acres
(Cat. No. 136) adjoining the western boundary of Augustus's
portion 5 and eastern boundary of his brother's portion 6.
By 1871 James had also selected portion 22 of 41 acres
(Cat. No. 136) adjoining portion 6 thus creating a block
of three adjoining portions totaling 132 acres (outlined
in yellow). Portions 4 and 46 further east on North Creek
outlined in red were originally selected in 1869 by
J. Blayney.
