Descendants of James Bannister Grace

James Bannister Grace, born 6 Oct. 1812 1 Northwood, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England, son of James and Elizabeth; died 17 May 1913 2 at Kempsey, NSW, Australia aged 100 years; buried 18 May 1913 West Kempsey Cemetery. He married 4 Apr 1840 6 in Boscombe, reg. Amesbury, County of Wiltshire, England, Anne Alexander "Ann", born 1823 3 in Devizes, Wiltshire, England; bapt. 14 Apr 1823 24, Devizes, Wiltshire; died on 28 Sep 1906 4 at Kempsey, NSW, Australia aged 83, buried West Kempsey Cemetery, daughter of James and Ann Alexander.

James and Ann Grace 12

James and Ann Grace accompanied by their first five children arrived in Sydney from England on the 25 Feb. 1855 on the Bengal. The immigration record had James' occupation as a brewer's or farm labourer indicating at some time in England he had worked for a brewer. Both the 1841 and 1851 census of England had his occupation as an agricultural labourer and the 1851 had Ann's as a school mistress. In March 1856 their first Australian born child Richard was born at Alnwick - a no longer existing village that fronted the west bank of the Hunter River just south of Raymond Terrace. From not long after arrival in Sydney James was employed as a labourer on contruction of the 16½ mile long railway line from Newcastle to East Maitland that was named the "Great Northern Railway" when officially opened on 30 March 1857 by the Governor General of the Australian Colonies Sir William Denison. When the birth of the second child Elizabeth was registered in April 1857 her birthplace was given as "railway near Hexham" and James' occupation as "railway labourer". The Hexham railway station was the only station on the line between Newcastle and East Maitland. It was renamed to "Tarro" in 1871 - the name it still bears today. Thus from at least April 1857 James would have lived in the area that today is Tarro and not in the actual village of Hexham located further east. When the next and last Hunter River born child Emma died in 1901 her Nov. 1861 birthplace was given as "Millers Forest at Hunter River" and her 30 December 1861 baptism record had her father's occupation as farmer and abode as "Cocodingy" - a rural property located in the Millers Forest area adjoining Alnwick village where presumably James was then leasing a farm portion.
Thus the records do not disclose exactly when between Apr. 1857 and Nov. 1861 James ceased to be employed on railway constuction and became a farmer in his own right. However it is likely his railway employment ended not long after the line was opened at the end of March 1857. His 1913 newspaper obituary gave the period of employment on the railway construction as 15 months indicating it would not have begun at the earliest until ten months after arrival in Sydney and before the end of 1855 and may have ended as early as a month after Elizabeth's late Feb. 1857 birth. Wife Anne's 1906 newspaper obituary gave 1862 as the year of their arrival at Macleay River where they were to remain for the rest of their lives and James' 1913 obituary confirmed that year in stating the family spent "about seven" years at the Hunter River before moving north to the Macleay.

Trek north from the Hunter

The precise reason for the move to the Macleay is not known - only that the family was not satisfied with "conditions" at the Hunter. From early in the history of the Macleay River settlement coasters plied the route between Kempsey and Sydney and from Nov. 1858 a steamer "New Moon" ran a regular service to and from Sydney and on the voyage north likely called at Newcastle to take on sufficient coal for the return trip to Sydney. So the family could have taken passage on it or on a coaster from the Hunter to the Macleay. However from son Frank's 1935 obituary it is known the family did not travel to Kempsey by way of the ocean but came by bullock wagon. The likely reason for that means of transport would have been that during the first seven years in the colony, and particularly during the farming years, the family would have acquired possessions it wished to retain such livestock, farm equipment, furniture etc.
The trek from the Hunter to the Macleay would have taken several weeks to accomplish. All would have been loaded on to a dray cart drawn by two or more bullocks for the trek along rough roads and tracks, passing through often inhospitable country, ever vigilant in case of a surprise attack by rouge natives or bushrangers. With four children under ten years of age it would have had many hardships and memorable moments. The obituary of son Frank, then about 15 years of age, mentioned the experiences on the trek left an "indelible impression" on his young mind.
With some variations there were two main routes from the Hunter that the family could have followed. One was from Maitland up to New England and then down to Port Macquarie via a road established in the 1840s to bring wool down from there for shipment to Sydney, from where with the vehicle and livestock they would have crossed the Hasting's River by the government punt at Blackman's Point, thence to Upper Rollands Plains and north to the Macleay via a road over the Marlo Merrican range to Dungay Creek. After crossing Dungay the road headed north and then east to the Macleay River following it down stream to the Callatina locality and then on to East Kempsey. By 1862 the route over Marlo Merrican, that prior to about 1859 when road construction began had been only a horse ridden mailman's track, had been converted to a dray trafficable road that during part of that year was trafficable by bullock drawn dray carts. Alternatively, and it appears such was the case, they would have come north via the coastal branch of the Great North Road from Morpeth to Port Macquarie that passed through Wingham - thence to Upper Rollands Plains and from there over Marlo Merrican range via the above mentioned road to the Callatini locality at Macleay River upstream from Kempsey. At the 1970 Grace family reunion held at Bowraville it was stated by a George Grace descendant that this was the route they travelled. Follow the link for an article by the compiler explaining available routes to Port Macquarie and Macleay River from the earlest times.

Macleay River

Whether James Grace leased or purchased the farm he settled on in the locality of Callitini (aka Callatina) could only be ascertained from the records at the State Archives. From 1836 it became legally possible to take up squatting runs beyond the County of Macquarie for which an annual licence fee was paid, and from 1848 squatters were able to obtain leases of their runs and later to puchase a portion by pre-emptive right. A licence for the run named "Callatini" was first taken up by John Henry Sullivan - son of the Police Magistrate at Port Macquarie. It was located on the most westerly section of a sweeping part circular bend in the Macleay River up stream from East Kempsey adjoining on the east the 1836 taken up run of William Henry Chapman named "Euroka". In 1848 when notice was given of the leases applied for under the regulation of March 1847 permitting such, Callatini's Macleay River boundary extended from on the east where the boundary of adjoining Euroka met the Macleay River to as far upstream as the mouth of Dungay Creek. On the west the boundary adjoined the Dondingalong run of Marcus McLeod and the southern boundary was the dividing range 34. John Sullivan relinquished the 19,260 acre "Callatini" cattle station run in 1840 and it was acquired by Patrick Campbell who held it until it was acquired by Herbert Salway in 1845. After it became possible to purchase leased land Salway bought one hundred and eighty six hectares (459 acres) of the run (portion #6 on Parish of Kalateenee maps). This portion was later subdivided and sold to farmers and it is said maize in great qantities was grown by them on the rich alluvial soil. The Grace farm was on this portion opposite Warneton, five to six miles up river from Kempsey, and approx. two miles below the head of navigation at Belgrave Falls. The linked to section of the Kalateenee parish map shows the location of the Herbert Salway purchased portion of his Callatini run. Today (2012), athough part obscured by private forestry, the farmlands at Euroka and on old Callatini station present a most attractive picture viewed from across the river at Greenhill on the Armidale Road.
It may be the circa 1862 Grace purchase, or as the case may be tenancy, of the farm at Callatini was arranged in Maitland before departure through a Stock & Station Agent repesenting the landowner. Perhaps a factor in deciding on the move to the Macleay was that later the sons might purchase land there as lands north and west of the river etc. had become open for selection following the passage of the Crown Lands Alienation Act in 1861 (aka the Robertson Lands Act) that allowed conditional purchase (CP) before survey at the price of £1 per acre on a 25% deposit with the balance over three years and interest from then at 5% per annum on unpaid balances.
Nine and half years after arriving in the colony and, only a couple of years after arrival at Macleay River, the family suffered what must have been a devasting blow. They lost absolutely everything, house, barn and furniture, and were left with just the clothes on their backs when all was swept away in the great flood of 1864 when the river at Callatini rose to a height of about 40 feet above the normal height, exceeding by 6 to 7 feet that of the highest previously known Macleay flood that occurred in 1848. During the night of 9th August the Grace family was rescued from certain death by drowning by the captain and crew of the schooner Woodpecker, that had been lying at anchor on the south side of the river near the Grace farm, who upon hearing their desperate cries for help. launched the ship's boat to rescue them and others in the same perilious predicament. To reach the ship's boat they had to wade up to their armpits through the floodwaters against a current so strong they could hardly keep their feet whilst carrying the younger children on their backs. In three trips the schooner's boat was able to ferry twenty-nine to safety aboard the schooner but on a later trip with seventeen refugees the current prevented it from reaching the safety of the schooner and the group had to pass the rest of the night in the boat tied to a tree stump.
James' obituary said that following the flood "he buckled down to work". He must have rebuilt the house, barn, and fences etc. and remained on the farm for a period as six months later in Feb 1865 when youngest child Susan was born her birth registration record gave her birth place as Kalateenee. Whilst seemingly from the above linked to account of the 1864 flood, son Walter likely then had a farm of his own on the opposite side of the river between Warneton and Belgrave in Yarravel parish, and it is known from an Oct. 1869 newspaper report he was at that time one of the main sugar cane growers on the river, if James still owned or was leasing the Callatini farm in late 1866 it is possible he preceeded son Walter as a pioneer Macleay sugar cane grower as on 8 Nov 1866 The Maitland Mercury Macleay River correspondent reported: "SUGAR-GROWING. - In many parts of the district this industry is much expanding, and the samples I have seen are most encouraging. Messrs. Cochrane, Flach, Grace, and M'Dougall are the principal movers in the industry, and their example is being followed."
James was subsequently the publican of the "Rose Inn" at East Kempsey for a period before acquiring land in Belgrave Street where by late 1870 he had established a market garden, and where he built a dwelling and retail store from which he traded as a seedsman (supplier of seeds) and fruiterer and remained until his death 5. A 1859 E.W. Rudder sketch map of Kempsey showed this hotel was located on the river front on the northern side of the road leading to the cross-river Government ferry. On the opposite side of road Port Macquarie and, from at least the first quarter of 1857 also Kempsey, merchant Horatio Tozer had a store. Whilst James was in the hotel business The Sydney Morning Herald on 4 Jan 1869 reported that a 1868 New Year's Eve prank was played on him as follows - "NEW YEAR'S EVE AT KEMPSEY. - The people, at least a portion of them, who reside at Kempsey, appear to keep up New Year's Eve in the old, but somewhat inconvienient and unpleasant manner, if the statement in the Macleay Herald is to be relied on - which states that Mr. Grace, of the "Rose Inn", East Kempsey, found, on rising in the morning, that his sign-board had been taken over the river and fastened to Mr. Harriott's verandah. Mr. Emerton's sign, from Kempsey, had replaced Mr. Grace's" 32.
Shortly after leaving the hotel business James again encounted misfortune caused by flood. On 1 Dec 1870 The Sydney Morning Herald, regarding the extensive flooding at Kempsey, reported: "Messrs. Newton and Heffren, living on the river bank, opposite Commandant Hill had to vacate their houses on Saturday afternoon, as had Messrs. Grace, Stanley, Denning, and Mrs. Grant, all of whom reside in Belgrave-street. Mr. Grace's garden, lately cultivated to great perfection, had a strong current of water passing over it, and has been left almost a waste.

James on his 99th birthday 12

Based on the age of 38 given at the 1851 census of England, confirmed by the 42 in his Feb. 1855 Australian immigration arrival record, James was born in 1812 thus was aged 100 when he died and not the 101 years stated in his obituary and in a Sydney newspaper report of his death. Apparently his and Ann's graves in West Kempsey Cemetery are unmarked. His 1906 dated will left his estate to his unmarried youngest daughter Susan who sometime post 1921 moved from Kempsey to live in Sydney where she died in 1944. Late in life James was presented with a chair honouring him as the oldest Mason in New South Wales and three days after his death the Sydney Morning Herald also reported he had held that distinction. An article in the 2 April 1910 issue of The World's News, picturing him in full regalia, indicates he was then the oldest Freemason in the world. Both his and Ann's obituaries appeared in The Raleigh Sun and his also in The Macleay Argus.

Ancestry

It has been noted incorrectly claimed on a web page that James Bannister Grace was baptised at West Cowes on the Isle of Wight on 24 Oct 1813 10. The Isle of Wight Record Office has microfilms and a card index of all church parish records on the island with those for the Church of England parishes starting from the 1600s. The Grace entries are few and there is no indexed marriage of James' parents James and Elizabeth and no baptism for a James Grace. So the web page is claiming a seemingly non-existent baptism took place on 24 Oct 1813! The record office has advised a full check of the actual baptism registers for 1813 disclosed a JAMES BANNISTER of West Cowes in Northwood parish, by occupation a labourer, and an Elizabeth, had a son named James baptised there on the claimed James Grace baptism date of 24 Oct 1813 with no birth date recorded. Thus in effect the web page claim is that James Grace changed his surname from Bannister to Grace sometime before he married in April 1840 whilst retaining his Bannister surname as a second given name. So in essence the claim is it follows, from the mere coincidence of the James and Elizabeth given parent names being those of James Grace's parents, that the 1813 Bannister surname baptism was actually his. Such is an outrageous claim and completely unsupported! Falling into the same category are claims noted in files at some internet genealogy web sites that give the names etc. of the parents of James Grace Snr's. father. In the absence of evidence of a same dwelling place of James Grace's father James and that of his claimed parents, or a will linking the claimed parents to James' father, who in any case has not been identified in either the 1841 or 1851 census, claims as to the names of James Jr's grandparents can only be rejected as completely unfounded and mere unsupported speculation presented as fact!
In those days James and Elizabeth were common given names and there were a considerable number with the Bannister surname on the Isle of Wight. In her ca. 1990 book Nancy Edge listed 12 Bannister and nil Grace marriages between 1792 and 1811 in Northwood parish that is said to have formerly been West Cowes, and a baptism on 15 Dec 1794 of an Elizabeth Bannister whose parents were Richard and Mary Bannister who was possibly the Elizabeth who was the mother of James Bannister Grace (in that respect Richard was also a name bestowed by James Bannister Grace on his 1856 Australian born son). Between 1844 and 1862 the official death registration indexes list three for an Elizabeth Bannister and between 1857 and 1874 three for a James Bannister. The father of the James Bannister baptised at West Cowes on 24 Oct 1813 may well have been the James Bannister buried in Northwood Cemetery at West Cowes on 12 Jul 1861 aged 71 thus born ca. 1790. He could have married ca. 1811 when aged 21. Alternativly Elizabeth Bannister's father could have been a James Bannister who died on the island in 1857 or the James Bannister who died there in 1874.
In this compiler's opinion it has to be assumed James Grace Sr. and wife Elizabeth married elsewhere than at the Isle of Wight, and whilst James was born there, that they left not long after his birth and he was baptised somewhere on the mainland. It may be that his mother Elizabeth's parents lived on the island and, as it was often the practice in those days for a woman expecting a baby to return to her parents or a sister's abode so they could assist, that she came back from the mainland for that purpose and afterward the birth returned with baby James to rejoin her husband thus explaining the absence of an island baptism record for a James Grace. The occupation of James' father is not known as it was not given in James' 1840 marriage registration record or in his 1913 death registration. It was not uncommon for itinerant mariners, seasonal workers, and others, originally from elsewhere to marry a local girl and afterwards depart with her, although if that had been the case with James' parents it would be expected there would have been been an Isle of Wight marriage record. It has been said it follows "obviously", from the absence of the names of James' parents as residents of Boscombe at the 1841 and 1851 census where James' 1855 NSW immigration record stated they resided where he left for Australia, that his parents moved to Boscombe after 1851. However such most certainly is not obvious as for one reason and another many did not participate in the census and the various compiled indexes are subject to ommissions due to unreadability and spelling errors etc. Whatever the reason for the failure to identify them in the indexes for either census it does not logically follow, as has been also claimed, that they remained living on the Isle of Wight after James departed for the mainland! Such is just another speculation presented as fact 22

The below early ancestry of Ann Alexander (1823-1906), wife of James Bannister Grace, was researched by Nancy Edge and is as given in her book The family Grace : Early Years.

The chart is based on the marriage and baptism registers of the St. John the Baptist parish in Devizes, Wiltshire, that record a James and Mary Herring had six children (two were twins) baptised there from 1766 to 1774 - viz:  Sarah 3.10.1766, William 25.9.1767, James & Mary (twins) on 20 (or 26).2.1769, James 1771, James 28.6.1774.
Of the six the first born Sarah on 3.12.1783 at the age of 17 years married Ambrose Alexander. The baptism register listed four Ambrose Alexander and Sarah Herring children - Betty baptised on 23.3.1784, Tabitha (or Talitha) on 6.6.1786, Aaron on 3.4.1789, and James on 13.6.1791. It appears likely the last born was the James Alexander who married at a place and time unknown an Ann whose surname is not known and, was the father of Ann Alexander baptised in the same parish on 14 Apr 1823 with parent names given as James and Ann Alexander of Devizes, who in April 1840 married James Grace in Boscombe.
Whilst the 1840 marriage registration did not record either the name or occupation of the father of either party, Ann's 1823 baptism record gave her father's profession or occupation as waiter at the Bear Inn. Post that event nothing is known of Ann's parents James and Ann Alexander except the 1855 NSW immigration record had that both were deceased before the family left for Australia in Nov. 1854. It is possible Ann's father was the James Alexander whose death was registed in Devizes in 1839 and her mother the Ann Alexander whose death was registered there in 1852 3. In her book Nancy Mackay Edge commented - It would seem that James Alexander may have progresed from waiter to owner or manager of the hotel as on the death certificate of his daughter Ann many years later her father's occupation was given as "publican".

Originally a coaching Inn the Bear Hotel has been prominent as a hostelry for centuries in Devizes and the West Country. It dates back to before 1559 and in 2010 was considered one of the best small hotels in Wiltshire and the south west. A short (1 min 24 secs) QuickTime viewable tourism promotional video of the hotel can be viewed at the link. In respect of the hotel name it is of interest to note the obituary of Ann's 1847 born third son Frank mentioned his parents Macleay River farm at Kallatina was named "Bearbury" 23.
On Easter Sunday 29 March 1970 a Grace family reunion was held at Bowraville attended by approximately 150 descendants who were told ancestors had been identified predating the Norman Conquest of England. Reports of the reunion with photographs appeared in two newspapers covering the Nambucca and Macleay Rivers. They contain a significant error in respect of the identity of the earliest identified ancestor who was not as stated Raymond le Gras - the commander of the English forces at the 12th century invasion of Ireland. Subsequent to the 1823 publication of the book quoted from at the reunion, titled Memoirs of the Family of Grace, the Grace ancestry was determined not to have been from Raymond le Gras but actually from the house of Blois founded by a Scandinadian pirate, and that it traces from the ancient lords of Tuscany down through Odo the Count of Champagne - the brother-in-law of William the Conqueror who accompanied him in the Norman Conquest of England. From 1283 AD Odo had a line of descendants establish themselves in County Kilkenny in Ireland where the family name gradually evolved from le Gros to le Gras and then by English pronunciation to Grace - being a name subsequently born by numerous prominent personages in Ireland and England. In addition to the 1823 publication, journal articles and manuscripts dating from 1712 to the early 20th century identify prominent descendants and provide a history of the family of Grace 14.
Photos of five James and Ann children appear below. In all they had 9 children, 56 grandchildren, and 167 great-grandchildren. Of the grandchildren the longest living was Christina Sheridan née Mackay who had eight children and lived to the quite remarkable age of 108 years and 112 days. Of the 167 great-grandchildren, several of whom at the time of this compilation in 2009 were still alive, known deceased centenarians were Ethel Grace Whatson née Moody (101) and Jane Grace Morris née Andrews (104). Linked is an alphabetical list giving age at death of descendants whose details appear in the text below.

He married in 6 Apr 1868 6 (#2497) in C of E East Kempsey, NSW, Catherine Simon "Kate", born 1847, Hattenheim, Nassau (now Hessen), Germany; died 13 May 1933 (#5954) Graces Road, Bowraville, NSW; buried C of E Section Bowraville Cemetery, eldest daughter of Michael Simon (1812-1894) and Margaretha Gros (1813-1884).

Like may children from working class families in the 19th century, when employment of pre-adolescent children in industry and agriculture was prevalent, Walter Grace would have begun his working life at a very young age. In the 1851 census of England when aged 10 his occupation was given as an agricultural labourer and when he arrived in Australia aged 14 the immigration record had it as shepherd. When he married in April 1868 his occupation was given as mariner which was also the occupation followed by his younger brother George after the family settled at Macleay River where George once owned the river boat "Tilly May" before becoming a carpenter and builder.
Greville's 1872 P.O. Directory listed Walter as a farmer at both Bowraville and on the Upper Macleay. The above linked to newspaper account of the 1864 flood indicates there were Grace farms almost opposite one another - one on the south side of the river at Callatina in Katateenee parish and the other on the north side between Warneton and Belgrave in Yarravel parish. The former had been his father James's farm and the latter presumably was Walter's - at least in 1864. As it is known before the end of 1868 James was the publican of the "Rose Inn" in East Kempsey, suggesting in 1870 both farms may have been farmed by Walter is that his and Catherine's second child Margaret was born at Kalateenee in January that year. Three months before her birth Walter was mentioned in a report in The Maitland Mercury as farming sugar cane. On 19 Oct 1869, copying from The Macleay Herald, the Mercury reported - "REMARKABLE OCCURRENCE - Some short time ago a dog belonging to Mr. Walter Grace, of the Upper Macleay, was bitten by a snake on the head. The dog killed the snake, and recovered from the bite. On Tuesday last when among her master's sugar cane, the dog was again bitten by a black snake, on the tongue. She killed this snake also ; and after running about for two days with her tongue swelled up and hanging several inches out of her mouth she recovered, and is now as right as if nothing happened. This is truely a most remarkable occurence." Whether this was the same sugar cane referred to in the 8 Nov. 1866 newspaper report mentioned above in the main family history section as then grown by Mr. Grace is not clear.
Confusing Walter and Catherine's subsequent location, is whilst the third child Catherine was born in Dec 1871 at Nambucca River, the fourth Jacob was born in 1874 at East Kempsey. The explanation for his birth being at Kempsey rather than at Bowraville may be that in 1874 the only doctor in the area was located at Kempsey and it was usual for a woman expecting to temporarily relocate to her mother's, a sister's, or another female in-law's abode so they could provide assistance. In that regard it is noted then living at Kempsey were Catherine's mother-in-law Ann Grace and a sister-in-law Margaret Simon who was a midwife.
Although the 1935 obituary of his brother Frank suggests otherwise, it has been said it was not until 1878 that Walter is recorded as having selected land in Buckra Bendinni parish west of Bowraville. The evidence suggests his initial residence was located on portion 50 that was originally selected before 1872 by a J. Moylan. On it and on adjacent acquired portions he farmed until his death. According to his will he named the aggregation "Woodbery" 20. It seems likely the name was derived from a rural property named "Woodberry", situated in the immediate area of the once Hexham railway station (since 1871 renamed Tarro), that today (2012) is part of the northern Newcastle suburb of Woodberry. The farm's southern boundary lay only just north of the railway station and about 1½ miles South West of the once Alnwick village and 2 miles South West of "Cocodingy" - an area where the Walter's Australian born siblings Richard, Elizabeth and Emma were all born between 1856 and 1861 - so seemingly a case of the Bowraville farm being Walter's "Woodberry". His obituary appeared in The Raleigh Sun of 25 June 1898. The executor's copy of his will and the twelve months later probate are held by the Bowraville Folk Museum and the images of same are produced here courtesy of the Museum.
Walter's wife Catherine Simon was born in Hattenheim, a small town on the north bank of the Rhine river in the famed German Rheingau wine growing region in Nassau - now the State of Hesse (or Hessen). She arrived when aged eight in Sydney from Hamburg in Sep 1855 on the Wilhelmsberg with her parents and four surviving siblings - Jacob (11), Francis (6), Joseph (5) and Margaretta (1). The Simon family initially arrived at Macleay River sometime before April 1857 when a son was born at Dondingalong up river from Kempsey. Subsequently they were at Rollands Plains where the last child was born in 1859 before they finally settled in the Dondingalong area sometime before Walter and Catherine married in 1868.
Walter and Catherine had eleven children (seven daughters and four sons) and thirty grandchildren. A Simon family history and genealogy authored by the compiler appears on the linked web page. In 2011 an extensively researched both in Australian and German records book on the Simon family of Macleay River was published by long-time Simon family researcher Dick Adams and is available through the Macleay Valley Historical Society Museum at South Kempsey. It has a full chapter on Walter & Catherine Grace and their descendants.

George's obituary appeared in The Macleay Chronicle of 15 September 1920 and Jane's in the same newspaper on 23 Jul 1919 on page 4.
Unlike his brothers Walter and Frank, who moved to the Nambucca, George remained in Kempsey where his parents had settled about 1865. In the Commonwealth electoral rolls from 1903 to 1913 he was listed as residing in Bissett Street in East Kempsey and in the 1919 roll he was at Belgrave Street. He would have been there from at least 1918 as it was mentioned as the family address when the Chronicle reported the death of son Stanley in action in France in April that year. Wife Jane's obituary appeared in the The Macleay Chronicle of 23 July 1919.

Frank Grace arrived in the Bowraville district about 1869 to harvest red cedar in company with his future father-in-law Allen Argent and his young sons Willie and Joe with Frank employing his bullock team to haul the cedar to market.
Frank's wife Rebecca Argent arrived in Sydney from England with her parents and younger sister Matilda on 3 Aug 1855 aboard the "Lloyds". Shortly after the family moved to Port Macquarie where it is said her father worked in the brickworks and as a gardener for Dr. Frederick McKellar before leasing a farm on the "Cogo" property west of Rollands Plains. In 1870 the other members of the Argent family joined Allen and his two sons on his selection about 8 miles west of Bowravile. Other families eventually moved to the area, erecting a store, post office, and church, with the resulting village of Argents Hill taking its name from the pioneer family 13 .
Frank's name appeared on a 1901 Parish of Buccra Bendinni map on portions adjoining those selected by his brother Walter. Rebecca's 1914 newspaper obituary indicates the farm was named "Happy Valley". Frank's obituary stated at the time of his 1935 death there were 30 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren still living.

Mary Jane was James and Ann Grace's first daughter. Transcripts of several lengthy letters written by her in the 1870s, mostly from "Gamigol" which would have been their above pictured property at Missabotti, are printed in the Nancy Edge book The family Grace : Early Years. During her last pregnancy Mary Jane accompanied by husband Robert and mother Ann Grace went to Sydney for medical treatment where in December 1881 she was admitted to the Infirmiry in Macquarie Street. Her last surviving letter dated 24 Jun 1882 was written from Kempsey to her sister Elizabeth "Betsy (1861-1924) - the wife of her husband's brother James Mackay. Later that same day baby Agnes "Ethel", who was raised by her sister Susan, was born and three days later Mary Jane died. Four years later in 1886 husband Robert married Sarah Fidelia Raymond (1858-1936) and had three more children. Mary Jane's niece Margaret Ann Grace, the eldest daughter of her brother Walter, in 1896 married Sarah's Fidelia's older brother Augustus Mead Raymond).

Ellen & James Hulbert  12
The above image is from a large oval framed photograph of Ellen and James held by the Bowraville Folk Museum. Both were aged 87 years when they died. They farmed at Missabotti and appeared there in the Commonwealth electoral rolls until 1921 but were not listed there in the 1925 roll. According to Ellen's obituary in the Nambucca District News of 4 Jul 1941 they moved about that time. It appears the move was to Kogarah in Sydney where on 21 July 1936 James died from injuries he received when hit by a car when crossing a street near his home. His funeral service was held two days later in Bowraville and after his death Ellen returned to the old homestead at Missabotti where she died 5 years later.
Ellen's obituary stated four sons pre-deceased her and there were four sons and one daughter surviving - Henry and William of Bowraville, George of Missabotti, Arthur of Sawtell, and an ummarried daughter Emma of Missabotti 27. However the survivng sons also included Robert and only two sons Frederick and William pre-deceased her. The caption on the Bowraville Museum held photograph indicates there was another son Benson Hulbert "Ben" but his Bowraville Cemetery headstone has him as born Mancester, England on 23 Jun 1835 and as died 18 May 1914 and the official death registration has his father's name as "Lee" - the same father's name given in the registration for a sister Rachael (1821-1914) buried beside him who died at Bowraville only three months later in August. There was another brother named Levi (1833-1921) whose father's name was given as "Leigh" and a sister Isabella but how the four were related to Ellen's husband James Richmond is not known.

She married in 10 Jan 1876 6 (#3097) at East Kempsey, Macleay River, James Mackay, born 3 Jun 1836 6 at Farr, Aberdeen, Scotland; d. 1918 (#4775) NSW, son of Angus Mackay (1794-& Christina Mackay.
Elizabeth and James Mackay lived most of their lives on their farm known as "Wia-ora" situated where two creeks meet at Missabotti near Bowraville. In 1913 the Commonwealth electoral roll listed them still residing there 25. In addition to their six children they raised a foster son Norton Clyde Gaddes, whose natural parents were William & Emma Gaddes nee Byrnes, William Gaddes being the son of James Mackay's full-sister Jane Mackay. When James Mackay died in 1918 his obituary stated he had 28 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
To mark the sesqui-centenial of the Oct. 1838 departure of the Mackay family from Scotland for Australia on the James Moran, where they arrived in Feb. 1839, a McKay / Mackay Family Reunion was held at Bowraville over the weekend of 1st and 2nd Oct. 1988 in conjunction with a "Back to Bowraville" carnvial attended by an estimated 2500 family descendants from the USA, Scotland, Europe, New Zealand, New Guinea, Asia and from every State of Australia.
In recognition of the reunion and, the Mackay family's Bowraville history, the Nambucca Shire Council named the park near the Bellingen Road approach to Bowraville as "Mackay Park" and during the reunion a plaque set in the park was unveiled. Central in the unveiling photograph are a grandaughter of James Bannister Grace (1812-1913) and Angus Mackay (1795-1894) - #58 below James & Elizabeth daughter then 99 year old Christina who lived to 108 years of age, and her same age first cousin Angus Mackay granddaughter Minnie Munro who when she married for the second time in 1991 at 102 years of age became the oldest person in the world to marry - a record still standing at the 2012 time of the last update of this genealogy/history compilation! In early Oct. 1991 about 400 attended the launch in Bowraville of a 600 page book on the history and genealogy of the family in Scotland and Australia titled, The McKay-Mackay Family History that contains over family 500 photographs of which two copies are held by the Bowraville Folk Museum.

Mary Jane was an active worker for the Red Cross in Bellingen. As was the case with her sister Margaret Raymond who predeceased her a stained glass window in St. Margaret's Church of England recognises her close association with that church. Ernest's North Bellingen farm was named "Orange Grove". Part of his original purchase became the Bellingen Showground and many years after his death the balance became the Sunset Ridge Estate at the western end of Wheatley Street.

SOURCES:
1.   Wife Ann's Friday 12 Oct 1906 obituary in The Raleigh Sun stated James turned 95 the previous Saturday 6 Oct. 1906 That age calculates to a 6 Oct 1811 birth date. Contradicting by a day is his obituary that gives his birthday as 7 Oct. Whilst there is no reason to doubt the day was the 6th or 7th, and that the month was October, it is apparent his birth year was 1812 and not 1811 so he was 100 and not 101 when he died.
In determining his birth year the 1840 Boscombe marriage record is of no assistance as it had his age only as "full". Also of no asistance is the 1841 census as ages as ages in were rounded down to the nearest 5, with his accordingly given as 25, Ann's as 15, and their then only child Walter as 7 months. As Walter was born on 1 Nov 1840, and the census was taken on 6 & 7 Jun 1841, only his age was accurately recorded. For the 1851 census taken on 30 Mar 1851 the practice changed to actual ages and his age was given as 38 indicating a birth year of 1812 and his 25 Feb 1855 Australian immigration record gave it as 42 also indicating an 1812 birth year. The next available record was the April 1857 birth registration of daughter Elizabeth Ann which had his age as 43 calculating to an even later 1813 birth. Not sighted is the last record that could determine his age - being that of the 1861 birth registration of the last born child Emma.
Accepting 6 Oct was the day and month of his birth, it follows he was born 6 Oct 1812, and between his arrival in Sydney and Ann's 1906 death a year was added to his actual age. Thus at 6 Oct 1906 when Ann died he was actually 94 not 95 and 100 not 101 when he died in 1913. In 2009 the IGI did not include baptisms from any Isle of Wight baptism register and the Isle of Wight Record Office card index of church baptisms on the island lists no James Grace baptism suggesting after his birth his parents James and Elizabeth relocated to the mainland such as to Southampton etc. where he would have been baptised later in 1812 or in 1813.
2.  Date from the NSW Probate Index - probate #61902 for John (sic) Bannister Grace and same date in the Tues 20 May 1913 SMH news item re the distinction of being the oldest Freemason in the State. NSW Death Index - #1913-9595 listed him as James B. Grace and his father as Banister (sic) Grace. The Banister as father's given name is considered incorrect as his 1855 immigration record gave his father's name as James. Nothing is known of his father's occuption as neither his name or occupation was not given in the 1940 marriage registration or in James' own death registration.
3.  In the facsimile of Ann's marriage record printed at p. 15 in the book Family Grace : the Early Years by Nancy Mackay Edge her age was given only as "under age". However her 25 Feb. 1855 immigration record gave it as 32 and her obituary as 83 when she died on 28 Sep 1906. In combination the records indicate she was born between 29 Sep 1822 and 26 Feb. 1823. The Saint John the Baptist in Devizes parish record has her as baptised on 14 April 1823 suggesting 1823 was the birth year. Her obituary in The Raleigh Sun had her as born in Dorsetshire, and as marrying 66 years previous - i.e. 1840. Her obituary in the Macleay Cronicle of 4 Oct. 1906 varied the county of birth to Dorset. Both are incorrect as the three earliest records of her birth place - her 1851 England census entry, the 1855 NSW immigration record, and the 1857 birth registration for daughter Elizbeth all had her birth place as Devizes in Wiltshire. Perhaps a garbling occurred and it was her mother or one of James' parents who were born in Dorset?
The latter stated both Ann's parents were dead. Perhaps they were the James Alexander whose death was registered in Devizes in Sep. Qtr. 1839 (v. 8, p. 192), and Ann Alexander whose death was registered there in Mar. Qtr. 1852 (v. 5a, p. 63). Perhaps Dorsetshire (or Dorset) was actualy the birth place of Ann's mother?
4   28 Sep 1906 date from NSW Probate Index (probate #38308 - duty paid 6 Dec 1906. Note - it follows the reference in her Friday 12 Oct 1906 newspaper obituary to the death having been on "Friday last week" should have read - last Friday week.
5   The Sands Directory from 1903 to 1915 listed him as James Grace a "fruiterer" in Kempsey. The Commonwealth electoral rolls for the Cowper electorate from 1903 to 1913 listed him as - James Grace a "seedsman", of Belgrave St., Kempsey. His obituary gave both fruiter and seedsman as his occupation. His death registration gave his occupation as gardener which was obviously just in reference to his main occupation in retirement with the retail activities from then being carried on by unmarried daughter Susan etc. No doubt at his great age he would have taken considerable pride in the produce of the garden with produce it then being sold in the shop. The Macleay River Historical Society holds a photograph of the shop.
In respect of the "Rose Inn" the 1859 E. W. Rudder sketch map of Kempsey had it located at East kempsey immediately adjacent to the where the Government ferry crossed the river. It was in existance by 1855 when The Maitland Mercury of 13 Jun 1855 reported that a public meeting was held there that resolved to request the Governnor to have Kempsey and the south bank of the river removed from the jurisdiction of the Police Station and Court House 50 miles distant at Port Macquarie and placed under the jurisdction of the Police Station and Court House at Belgrave located only 9 miles distant up river at the head of navigation. The Sydney Morning Herald of 27 Dec 1857 reported that the first public dinner ever to be held in Kempsey was held there and The Maitland Mercury on the 5 Jan 1861, reporting on Boxing Day at events at Macleay River, mentioned - "The enterprisng proprietor of the Rose Inn, Mr. Heads (he would have actually been Thomas Neads who the SMH of 1 May 1860 reported was granted renewal for the upcoming financial year to 30 June 1861 of his publican's licence for the Rose Inn - the other Kempsey publican's granted licences then being George Knight for the "Star Inn" and Thomas Robertson for the "West Kempsey Inn") had contributed a bullock, which was roasted, and every other auxilary to that comfortable arrangement of internal fortification".
6  Marriage date as per opt. cite Nancy Mackay Edge at #3 above - ages of the parties were given as "full" and "under age", the groom's given name was just "James", and the names and occupations of the father's of the groom and bride were not given.
The Boscombe baptism dates for the first five children of James and Ann Grace are per opt. cite Nancy Mackay Edge at p. 14. 32  The full text of the article in the The Sydney Morning Herald of 11 Jan 1869 read - "NEW YEAR'S EVE AT KEMPSEY. - The people, at least a portion of them, who reside at Kempsey, appear to keep up New Year's Eve in the old, but somewhat inconvienient and unpleasant manner, if the statement in the Macleay Herald is to be relied on - which states that Mr. Grace, of the Rose inn, East Kempsey, found, on rising in the morning, that his sign-board had been taken over the river and fastened to Mr. Harriott's verandah. Mr. Emerton's sign, from Kempsey, had replaced Mr. Grace's - while a chair, taken from the verandah of Mr. Neale, the painter, took the place of Mr. Emerton's sign. Mr. Marriott's sign of "Board and Lodging" was found up the rigging of a schooner Fred S White, which was lying at East Kempsey at the time. Mr. Crossman's flagstaff was decorated with a kerosene oil can at the mast head- while from Mr. Neale's flagstaff hung the Star Inn lamp. Mr. McCarthy's verandah was strewn with bones ; and a form was hung from our sign-board - which not seeing, we received a forcible reminder of its presence by our head coming in contact with it. The whole town presented a most grotesque appearance.

34  In respect of the Callatini locality name in 1842, Clement Hodgkinson, contactor for the Government survey of the Macleay area, wrote:- "The stations on this part of the rivers are ... on the south side, Euroka and Callatini, being all cultivation and cattle stations." [The Sydney Morning Herald 19 Sep 1842].
When then squatting licence holder Herbert Salway applied in 1848 for a crown lease of the run he gave its' name as Calatini and part of its eastern boundary as the fence dividing it from the Euroka run - [The Sydney Morning Herald 26 Jul 1848]. In the same notice John Evans (William Henry Chapman's manager), as applicant for the adjoining Euroka run, gave its western boundary as the fourth section line of the "parish of Callitini" (sic). Thus it follows the original run's spelling of Callitini was his assumption of how the parish name was spelt. However when the parish was created by the government apparently it adopted the phonetic equivalent more aboriginal "Kalateenee" spelling. That Kalateenee was by then the government's spelling of the parish name is apparent, as at the same time Enoch William Rudder when applying for a lease of his "Woodfield" run whose eastern boundary from the river adjoined the Euroka run, gave the parish name as Kalateenee. Hence references to a place as being Kalateenee, Callitini or Callatina are all the same. Thus the parish of Kalateenee must have existed in the County of Macquarie before the counties of Vernon and Dudley were created by proclamation on 29 Dec 1848. After then the parish of Kalateenee was in Vernon before in 1861 it was relocated to the County of Dudley where it has since remained.
John Warne J.P. of Warneton, who in 1864 wrote that his station homestead was situated on the north bank of the river opposite the Grace farm, in a letter to the editor commenting on the S.M.H.'s leader of 25 Aug 1864 that had included an earlier letter from him re the August 1864 flood in which the Herald had incorrectly spelt the locality name as "Collatina", in a second letter published on 26 Sep 1864 the paper corrected the spelling from an obvious initial misreading of Warne's handwriting to Callatina viz - "no surveyor could have foreseen the flooding of the Callatina and Euroka, and other properties opposite my residence."
