The Family of Levi Childress (1805-1879)
Brother of Obediah Childress, Sr.

(Above photo courtesy of Louis Allen and Kathleen Childress Holt)
Like several of his siblings and his father, Levi
Childress lived a successful life and dabbled in the public arena of
politics. He was a Justice of the Peace and a judge. He must have
had a sense of fairness as the following tale depicts. "A Van
Winkle descendent who married a Childress told the story about his
great-grandfather and another man having a fist fight. They appeared before Levi
Childress, the judge. Levi disappeared for a while to consult his law books
which he kept in another room. After studying the case, he came back out
and announced his verdict. Each man had to pay a fine of $5, which both
thought was fair and just. After Mr. Van Winkle returned home and told his
wife about the incident, he received a much worse verdict from his wife who was
aghast that $5 had been thrown away in a fight and that he had torn his shirt
too."
The following four photos were furnished to me by a descendant
of Levi Childress, Mrs. Lucille (Vann) Cohen (1914-1999). Mrs.
Cohen did a great deal of research on her family and contributed greatly to the
family tree data base.

Levi Childress and his wife Susannah Montgomery had a total of
fifteen children, four of whom are pictured above. The first photograph is of John Snow Childress
(1825-1912). Never married, John Snow once walked from his home in the
hill country to the Texas coast and lived among the Indians. The second
photo is that of Samuel Childress (1829-1908), whose legs were so large
that his newly purchased boots had to be split at the top in order for his
calves to fit, according to one of his granddaughters. Elizabeth (Childress)
Batson (1835-1912) is shown next, followed by her youngest sister, Cornelia
Jane (Childress) Crow (1851-1937) and her husband Henry Lafayette Crow
(b. abt. 1850).
The following photograph is of the Henry Lafayette Crow family,
made circa 1896.

Son of Levi Childress
The following photographs were furnished by Kathleen Childress
Holt, direct descendent of Levi Childress. The first photo features Elizabeth
Evaline Tolbert (1853-1930), wife of William Marvin Childress (1852
to 1914) who was the son of George L. Bayles Childress. The second photo
is of the three sons of William Marvin; George L.B. Childress (b. 1879), William
Tolbert Childress (b. 1886) and Charles Lewis Childress (b. 1888),
grandfather of Kathleen Childress Holt. Kathleen could only provide the
name of the center individual, her grandfather, Charles Lewis
Childress. The third and last photograph below is of the sister to the
aforementioned three men, Minnie Maude Childress (1895 to 1929).
Minnie married Sam Larry Crow (1887 to 1968) in 1911.
