Coming into Bilbao /Santurtzi harbour after our overnight 'cruise' from Portsmouth via the (calm thank goodness) Bay of Biscay on an Acciona line ferry. On this leg of the trip we didn't see any but on the return ferry we thrilled to the sight of a school of Porpoises which ducked and dived round the ferry for over an hour. Salamanca Cathedral. Viewed from south of the river as we drove to our super campsite (Camping Regio) a couple of miles out of the centre. Campsite had use of a lovely swimming pool at the hotel next door - most welcome as it was (according to our journal) "exceedingly Hot". Main Square in Salamanca. A lovely sight. Cycling through Salamanca. Mobile phone is an essential accessory... Salamanca Cathedral. Not sure if this is part of the old or the new cathedral as the two are joined together and the new is still pretty old ! Just look at that fantastic blue sky - it was a feature of almost all our trip.
The cloisters of the old Salamanca Cathedral. I love the light and shade of cloisters. Inside the "New" Cathedral in Salamanca. Wonderful lighting effect. Another view of the main square in Salamanca. We are now in Portugal. Crossed border into Elvas and then travelled West. This is the beautiful historical town of Evora. It was full of tourists but that was not surprising as it was well worth the visit. Lovely bright white town of Evora en route from Spain to the west coast of Portugal.
More of Evora in Portugal. Took this photo just because I liked the bright washing. Found a super market just outside Vila Nova de Milfontes (on the South West coast of Portugal). They sold absolutely everyhing here. Vila Nova de Milfontes sunday market. Vila Nova de Milfontes sunday market. Vila Nova de Milfontes beach. This really was superb and we spent a wonderful sunday afternoon sunbathing and swimming in the very calm (and warm) sea. Outside the river estuary the waves were too strong for swimming but here, within the estuary, the protected little bays were absolutely perfect.
Now this really was a wonderful spot - Praia de Odeceixa - on the south west coast of Portugal well away from the crowds and tourism of the Algarve. The entire beach area along this part of the coast is protected, National park. Another superb beach (Carrapateira) on the south west coast of Portugal en route to Sagres from Vila Nova de Milfontes. The only way to get to the beach was to wade through the river but oh it was so worth the effort. river but oh it was so worth the effort. Not us in the photo I should explain - just a family keen to get to the sea. Bob crossing the river to get to Carrapateira beach in Southwest Portugal. Carrapateira beach- just about in the Algarve on the protected South West coast of Portugal. The colours were astonishing. The sky and the water were both so very bright blue that they merged together. A village near the coast in South West Portugal en route for Sagres. The flowers are roses and dahlias - how do they manage to grow them in such a hot and dry climate ?
The cliff tops of Sagres. Most South Westerly point of Continental Europe. We did not manage to find the owner of the car - he could have been fishing off a ledge round the other side of the cliff. On the other hand he could have jumped off ! A rather iffy bit of parking though. Beautiful (empty) beach at Sagres - south west corner of Portugal. Fishing in Sagres harbour. Travelling along the Algarve coast of southern Portugal. River estuary in the Algarve.
Silves - just inland from the Algarve. Only one problem with this town - it had extremely narrow streets and these were made even narrower by the cars parked along them. We unfortunately managed to turn right into the centre while trying to find a parking spot for the Motorhome and had to drive out down a street which really was not wide enough to accomodate our vehicle. We made it but we must have lost a rubber from the side of the tyres ! Typical white church in Silves, just a few miles inland from the Algarve coastline. Driving through the bright white villages of the Algarve. Secluded Algarve beach just to the West of busy Albufeira. No guessing where this roundabout clock is located.
