Duffield, (baptized Theophile) Joyal,

was born on March 16, 1828 in

St. Francois du Lac, P.Q.

He was the son of Jean Baptiste Joyal

and Josephte Fortville.

7Duffield's lineage is as follows:

6Jean Baptiste, 5Michel (Fils),

4Michel (Pere), 3Joseph Lafrenier,

2Jacques Jouiel, 1 Etienne Jouiel.

Duffield married Emily (or Amelia)

Grange (Barnes.)

Emily was born on December 27, 1830

in Highgate, Vermont.

She was the daughter of Peter Grange

and Mary Ann Loon.

At some point, Duffield had moved due

South, from St. Francois du Lac,

P.Q., to Bakersfield, Vermont.

There, he and Emily farmed, and raised

their children:

Louise b. 1853

Pauline b. 1855

Lewis (died at birth)

Moses b. 1858

Andrew b. 1860

Nelson b. 1865

Eli b. 1868

Hillary Israel

Philbert b. 1870

Alfred b. 1872

School records show that at one point

the children were registered under the last

name of Playful. In later years, some

chose to go back to Joyal and some chose

to keep Playful as their surname.

(For example, Philbert was one who kept

the name of Playful, while Nelson chose

to go back to using Joyal.

Duffield died on June 23, 1902

in Bakersfield, Vermont.

Emily died on October 21, 1906

in Bakersfield, Vermont.

They are buried in St. George's

Roman Catholic Cemetery

in Bakersfield.
