Nellie E. Beach, 97, loved family, church

Nellie Elizabeth Beach was a tough lady who lived on her own until the last few months of her long, long life, said her son, Ronald Beach.
With seven children, 28 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren, she had to be able to withstand a lot.
"She had a lot of grit," said Ronald Beach, of Crittenden.

Mrs. Beach, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at Grant Manor Nursing Home in Williamstown. She was 97.

She was a homemaker, a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and a Sunday school and Bible school teacher at the church. Beach said his mother was particularly supportive of missionary work.

"She was a good Christian person, she loved the Lord. She was always interested in missions and inspired us to be as well," he said.
Her family took top priority in her life.

"Family was really important to her," Beach said. "She was always concerned about others."

Late in her life, Mrs. Beach became somewhat of an environmentalist, her son said, and would read news stories about taking care of the earth. "Once she had me take a truck full of glass to recycle up to Cincinnati, " he said.

Beach said his mother also took care of his ailing father for nearly 15 years before he died. "I'll always be indebted to her for that, for taking care of him like that," he said. Her husband, Ronald C. Beach, died in 1984. A daughter, Norma Smith, died in 1991.

Other survivors include another son, David Beach of Dry Ridge; daughters Garnett Jones of Georgetown, Lois Carnes and Ruth Glass, both of Mount Zion, Eileen Mullins of Beauty and Claudia O'Neil of Lexington; and a sister, Mable Ferrell of Latonia.

Services will be at 11 A.M. Saturday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Vine Run Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C. 28607.
