From: Flo (Brown) Jordan as compiled by Blake Conrad: Listed as Andrew Gardain on 1871 census of Wine Harbour, Guysborough County.

From Margaret Orr Nutter Alexander: Adeline Jordan wrote this story about Andrew: "Janie (Langille) told a funny story that she said her mother (Martha Ann Jordan Bennett) used to tell them. It seems that she and Mary (Tommy Jordan's wife) were great friends and spent a lot of time together. This day, her father, Red Andrew (who never was blessed with much energy and in later years was a bit odd) decided life wasn't worth living and was going to end it all by drowning himself. She and Mary watched out the window as he started down over the hill to the lake knowing that he would never go through with it. As he went, he started to sing at the top of his voice "Why do we mourn departed friends or shake at death's alarm, 'Tis but the voice of Jesus to call his loved ones home." He waded out into the water to his waist and found that the water was just too cold, so he turned and started back and when he got to the shore, he started singing again, "We'll work, we'll work till Jesus comes, then we'll be gathered home." They did feel sorry, but said her mother and Mary often spoke of it and laughed. The first verse must be a real old hymn, for no one had heard it before (Adeline Jordan received her information from Janie Langille and Fraser Jordan).

Andrew married 2 Ann (Annie) DINGLE [scrapbook] 1 on 26 Jan 1840 in Sherbrooke By Rev. Joseph Alexander. Ann was born 3 in 1813 in England. She died 4 on 4 May 1919 in Indian Harbour Lake. She was buried on 6 May 1919 in Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia.

According to the 1891 census for Guysborough, Ann was 66 years of age in 1891, which would make her born about 1825 and not 1813.

From Jane McInnis: "It is believed that Ann came over on a ship from the British Isles when she was orphaned as a toddler, and was adopted by a family on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. Ann lived to be over one hundred years old. She and Andrew are buried in the Church of England gaveyard in Sherbrooke, Guysborough Co., Nova Scotia."

From: Flo (Brown) Jordan as compiled by Blake Conrad: "Anne Jordan, aged 102 years, was buried 6 May 1919, by the minister of Holy Trinity Anglican Parish, Country Harbour, Guys. Co. Burial was at Sherbrooke." Margaret Alexander, of East Bridgewater, Mass. believes Anne Jordan may have died earlier in the year, possibly in Jan.

From Margaret Orr Nutter Alexander: "Aunt Emma told me that she was born in Massachusetts and sent to Nova Scotia to live with an uncle."

From Margaret Orr Nutter Alexander: "Aunt Emma told me and apparently Kathleen MacKay had heard also from an old relative that at the time of the wars between the French and the English in Europe - which lead to war in Nova Scotia, an English boat captured the French boat. On the French boat was a little Jordain boy and on the English, was the little Dingle girl. And when they grew up they were married. However, Aunt Emma also told me that she had heard that Ann Dingle was from Massachusetts and was part Indian. The other story came Janie ?

From George Nye: "When I spoke (Jan 2000) to Blake Conrad, (he does searches for the Native Council of Nova Scotia) he found no evidence that Ann Dingle had native blood."

From Margaret Orr Nutter Alexander: Ann and Andrew are buried behind the Anglican Church in Sherbrooke. Her birthplace is uncertain. Some relatives feel she was born in England while others feel that she was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was taken by boat when she was 4 years old and taken to Liscombe where she was adopted by an uncle. They lived in Jordanville, Nova Scotia in a log home that had a trellis covered with hops vines. Everyone grew hops in order to make yeast.

From Margaret Orr Nutter Alexander as told to her by Kathleen Jordan MacKay: Annie was a great worker and would walk the 2 1/2 miles into Sherbrooke on dirt roads, barefooted, carrying her shoes so that they wouldn't get worn out. When she reached the Anglican Church, she would sit on the steps and put her shoes on and then go to work cleaning people's houses. Going home she would reverse the process and take her shoes off again on the church steps. All the time she was walking, she would be knitting. She had 16 children, 15 of whom lived to adulthood. One of Anne's sayings was: "Oh my, what a way to live, but a worse way to die."
