I'm guessing here at this first part but it's the best I can do for now. Daniel's Father (Possibly named) Rees JENKINS or Daniel himself left Merthyr Tidfyl in the hopes of gaining employment at the newly established YnysCadwen Iron Foundry in Ystalyfera, finding accommodation in Ystradgynlais. Ystalyfera was at this time still no more than a few farms and no or little housing for workers. Daniel probably had a job at the Iron works and learned his craft as Iron Mill Refiner there. At some point in the 1830s he met Lyzod WATKINS, courted and married her on June 24th 1837. Their first son Daniel (My Grt. Grandfather) was born in 1838 at Ystradgynlais. By this time however the Ynyscedwen Iron Foundry was experiencing a decline in it's fortunes and Daniel must have decided to seek work elsewhere, for in 1841 we find him and his family living in margam where he found work at Margam Iron Works. In the years following 1840 Lyzod returned to Ystradgynlais to give birth to her second son Rees and daughters Lyzod, Mary and Elsizabeth. By 1851 he had moved on to live in Gower Street, Cwmafan a few miles up a valley to the North of Port Talbot where he was employed still as an Iron Refiner, his eldest son Daniel was working alongside him as an apprentice or assistant. It was from Cwmafan that Lyzod went home to her parents in Ystradgynlais to have her last child Thomas and I believe she found out that the Ynyscedwen Iron Works had seen an upswing in it's fortunes and was again employing for we find that the family has returned to the area by 1861 and is living at Craig Arw, Alltygrug which is now Ystalyfera. Except for their eldest son Daniel they had all returned to the upper Swansea valley, Daniel must have met his future bride by this time or just decided it was time to strike out on his own because we find him living in Briton Ferry on the 1861 Census. In 1862 Rees Married Margaret REES and they had a son John Daniel in 1864, 2 years later in 1866 Rees fell victim to the Cholera outbreak in Ystalyfera and died after what must have been an agonizing 25 day illness, Daniel, his father also succumbed to the Cholera and died in the December. Rees was living on Gough Road at the time of his death, he was aged just 26 yrs. His widow Margaret never remarried. Mary JENKINS was living at home when Evan CLATWORTHY the son of Thomas CLATWORTHY a local businessman (Watchmaker and Brewer) started courting her, they married in ??? and opened a Public House in Ystalyfera called the ??? Thomas Clatworthy was able to set his two eldest sons Evan and William up in a business each from that which he already knew and could share. Whereas Evan went into the Brewing and Licensed trade, William became a Jeweller and Watchmaker, we know that he had a shop in Pontardawe and possibly Clydach. Evan and Mary moved down the valley too, ending up in Morriston and "The Swan Inn" & "The Dillwyn Arms" knew them as licensees. Daniel, who had stayed in Briton Ferry met and married Mary Ann Williams, they moved to Morriston taking up residence at 29 Dillwyn Street (Later renamed "Glantawe Street"). There they had 2 children both girls, the first they named Lyzod after her Paternal Grandmother and the second Mary Elizabeth after her Maternal Grandmother. Mary Elizabeth was courted by Gwilym JONES my Grandfather, they married in Swansea Register Office. More detail will be added here as it becomes available. |
