While at the Gadsden library I copied a few pages from "The Roster of Confederate Soldiers, 1861-1865, Volume VIII" edited by Janet B. Hewett. I found the following listing:

Marion Johns Co. E, 51 Alabama Partisan Rangers Captured Shelbyville, TN 6-27-1863  Taken to Louisville, KY 7-3-1863  Taken to Camp Chase, OH 7-6-1863  Taken to Ft. Delaware, 7-14-1863  Died 10-18-1863 of small pox.

Marion Johns Co. E, 12 Alabama Cavalry Donelson's Co., 1 Alabama Cavalry Enlisted 8-21-1862 at Mt. Alvies, Alabama;(near current day-Vinemont in Cullman Co., AL) horse value $150 POW of Middleton, TN 1-31-1863; sent to City Point, James River, VA. 2-11-1863 Roll of POW, Ft. McHenry, Maryland 2-14-1863 Sent to Fortress Monroe for exchange by order of Mjr. Gen. Schenck 2-15-1863Paroled at City Point, VA, no date  Admitted to General Hospital, Petersburg, VA 2-18-1863  Died of Typh. pneumonia 3-3-1863


WILLIAM SMITH JOHNS  was born March 20, 1843 in Arthur Kentucky, and died May 30, 1892 in E. St. Louis Ill.. He married ELIZABETH SKINNER August 31, 1863 in Randolph County Ill., daughter of SKINNER and ORDELIA.

William Smith Johns at the age of 43, on 20th Aug 1861 joined Company "C" of the Illinois Volunteers.Private Johns was in the battle of BigShanty & was in General Shermans march to the sea. He was in a skirmish in which 20 were killed and was wounded at Brush Mountain near Kenisaw Georgia by Shapranel around 27 June 1864. He was treated at Rome Ga. Hospital and transferred to Fort Donaldson Hosp., at Jackson Tenn.  He was sent to Washington DC for war ending ceremonies and sent to Louisville Ky. for discharge on 17 July 1865. His company walked from Memphis Tenn to meet with Shermans march to the sea in Georgia and was wounded in Georgia. This data taken from copies of the official War Dept Adjutant Generals Office Pension record No. 55,9369. by Lester P, Johns Jr.   Burial Mt. Hope Cemetary Belleville Ill.


Gen Lee's Orderly Johns present at his side at Appomattox Court House:

General Lee was accompanied only by Colonel Marshall, formerly of Baltimore, at present aid-de-camp on his staff, and Orderly Johns , who has served him in that capacity for fourteen months.   (The identity of the Johns who served as Lee's orderly has not been definitively established.)
