SMITH
JOHNS was
born March 20, 1843 in Arthur Kentucky, and died May 30, 1892 in
E. St. Louis Ill.. He married ELIZABETH
SKINNER August 31, 1863
in Randolph County Ill., daughter of SKINNER
and ORDELIA.
William Smith Johns at the age of 43, on 20th Aug 1861 joined Company
"C" of the Illinois Volunteers.Private Johns was in the
battle of BigShanty & was in General Shermans march to the sea.
He was in a skirmish in which 20 were killed and was wounded at
Brush Mountain near Kenisaw Georgia by Shapranel around 27 June
1864. He was treated at Rome Ga. Hospital and transferred to Fort
Donaldson Hosp., at Jackson Tenn. He was sent to Washington
DC for war ending ceremonies and sent to Louisville Ky. for discharge
on 17 July 1865. His company walked from Memphis Tenn to meet with
Shermans march to the sea in Georgia and was wounded in Georgia.

Court House:
General Lee was accompanied only by Colonel Marshall, formerly
of Baltimore, at present aid-de-camp on his staff, and Orderly Johns
, who has served him in that capacity for fourteen months.
(The identity of the Johns who served as Lee's orderly has not been
definitively established.)
