Subj: Re: Greene County Ala Marriage Index 1823-1936

Troie,

Thank you for the Greene County, AL Marriage Records. S. A.
Ashley who married William D. Holcomb was probably Sarah Ann Ashley,
Moses and Nancy Lay's daughter. She was born in l854 in Greene
County, AL, and she was a sister to Rebecca M. and a half sister to
Joseph. Note that she married in l870 in Greene County even though
Moses's household was not listed on the l870 Greene County Census--a
good indication that they were still in Greene County and not counted
on the census. Moses and Annie R's marriage was not included on this
record even though it covers the period of their marriage. I read
that the courthouse in Greene County burned sometime after l860 and,
some of the records were destroyed. Maybe this is why their marriage
record is missing.

The James G. Ashley listed on the marriage record, who married
Melvina Oakes in l862, could be the same James G. Ashley who married
Ruthie A. Holmes on July 23, l879 in Tuscaloosa County--L.S. at this
marriage was John T. Robertson. There was a James G. Ashley listed on
the1870 Tuscaloosa County Census. He was listed as age 26 and the
only member in the household. His occupation was listed as, ferryman.
I don't know if these James G. Ashleys are the same person, but I
think a James G. Ashley was related to our line. If not, why was
John T. Robertson " L. S." at his wedding in Tuscaloosa Co. in l879?
I would think that he was a son of Moses, but he was not listed in his
household on the l850 Greene Co. Census.

The Jessie M. Ashley on the marriage record, who married Etta B. Hammet
in l90l, was Samuel and Rebecca M. Ashley's son. He died when I was
about 7 or 8 years old. I remember going to his furneral in Meridan,
Missisippi. He had a beautiful old home, I remember that the wake was
held there. He worked as a railroad engineer.
