Subject: 1820 SC Census and Daughters of William and Delila
...
I have just read, with interest, your information on the 1820 SC
Census. Before I left the Genealogy Center last Tuesday, I copied the
Ashleys' on the 1790, l800, l8l0, and the l820 Census Indexes. I did
not have time that visit to look at the actual census records, but I
plan to do that this week when I go back to the G. Center.

I have always thought that our Ashleys came from Abbeville County or an
area close to Abbeville County. I agree that the "William" that you
pointed out on the l820 SC census look promising as "our"
William.

On the probate records that I found, there was a Joseph, David and
Edward that had records on corresponding pages with William, Delila,
and their known sons. Could they have been missing sons of William and
Delila?

Also, on your web page, it was mentioned that Sarah and Ann Ashley
could have been daughters of William and Delila. Wouldn't that have
been very likely since William, Delila. and Samuel were the only
"Ashleys" listed as heads of households on the l830 and l840 Madison
County Censuses? Also, nothing definitive, but Moses first son was
named Joseph and his first daughter was named Sarah Ann; and it seems
to me that "our' line of Ashleys never named a child unless it was
named after a family member.

Also in all of my searching, I have come across information that makes
me believe that Tabbitha was Moses and Delila's daughter and not their
daughter-in-law. What I saw in my search was her age and she was too
young at some point when she was living with William and Delila to have
been married. I should have written the information I saw down, but it
did not register with me until a later time that perhaps she was
William and Delila's daughter. I know, I have to consider that she had
a son named Marcus Ashley.

As I have already stated, I am going to the LDS Family Center on
Tuesday to see if I can order the Madison County Probate Records
microfilm. However, if it is not available there, I have discovered
that I can order the probate records for $3.00 per name and $1.00 per
page copy from the Probate Court in Madison County, GA. I have the
telephone number and the address of the P. C. in Madison County. That
sounds a lot more economical than the $25.00 per name fee from the GA
Archives. I'll keep you posted on the results of my searches this
week.
