Isaac1 ASHLEY was born circa 1667 (I estimated Isaac's yob by his eldest child's date of birth (1689), Lancaster County Virginia?).(1),(2) He married Elizabeth "Eliza" (--?--) circa 1688 Virginia? or Maryland? On 19 January 1700 Cecil County, Maryland, Isaac Ashley witnessed the will of William Hubbard (John Tweege/Twigg also witnessed). William's wife and only legatee was Eliza. Estate included 50 A on south side of Worton Creek. Was this the plantation ("that seated by Wm. Hubert") mentioned in Isaac Ashley's will? Could Isaac's wife, Eliza, have been William's daughter?(3) On 6 April 1707, Land Office (Patent Record) Pt. 1, p. 243 Isaac Ashley, William Ashley and John Ashley "Ashley's Lott" Kent County Maryland. 300 acres 1744. Isaac ASHLEY had on the 6th April 1707 surveyed and laid out for him a certain tract of land called "Ashley's Lott" containing 300 acres by virtue of a special warrant for that quantity granted him the 2nd April 1707, but before he sued out patent thereon he died and his right thereto is vested in the petitioners [Isaac Ashley, Sr, William Ashley, Isaac Ashley, Jr., and John Ashley], viz 100A the right of the petitioner Isaac Ashley Sr., 100A the right of the petitioner William Ashley, 50A the right of the petitioner Isaac Ashley Jr and the remaining 50A the right of the petitioner John Ashley. Lying at the head of a creek called Whartan Creek. He died between 24 January 1709 and 29 March 1709 Kent County, Maryland (Isaac wrote his will on the 24th of January 1709 and it was probated on the 29th of March that same year. To son John and heirs, dwelling plantation, or that seated by William Hubert; Son Isaac and heirs one which son John refuses. Son Thomas and heirs 100 acres next to main road; son William 100 acres adjoining John Tweegyes [Twigg] plantation; young son Abraham 100 acres. To wife Eliza, executrix, personalty during life. Witnesses William Hopkins, John Beck, Jr., Mary Beck, Sr., Mary Beck, Jr. Isaac's will was administered again on 6 Jun 1710, extx. Elisabeth Twigg, wife of John Twigg).(4)

Information found in "Colonial Families of the Eastern Shore of MD", states that she probably married Jacob Gooding. Jacob and Sarah Gooding were parents of: Sarah, b. 1 Jan 1728; James, b. 8 Aug 1731; Jacob, b. 8 Feb 1733; and John, b. 1 Aug 1736. KESP This is probably not the Sarah Ashley who was a daughter of Isaac & Rachel, as this Sarah Ashley could not have been old enough to have a child in 1728. Her father was born after 1714 (his parent's marriage date) and would not have married until the mid-1730's (at the earliest). Another possibility is that Isaac was not a son of John & Martha Ashley's and therefore could have been born earlier and had a daughter old enough to be married by 1728).(14),(15)

He is almost certainly the John Ashley who petitioned to examine the evidence of the bounds of his tract called Ashleys Green.(22) He died in 1767 Kent County, Maryland. Heirs named in John's will were wife Mary and children: John, Daniel, Nancy, and Milcah Ashley. Mentioned were Col. Edward Lloyd and Richard Frisby. The tract Ashley's Lott was mentioned. The will was witnessed by John Green, Richard Frisby and Kinvin Wroth. On 5 Nov 1767, his estate was appraised by John Wickes and Jean Yeates, and valued at 272.11.1. On 30 Apr 1768, John's estate was appraised by John Wickes and Marmaduke Tilden, and valued at 65.2.0. William Ashley and John Jones Ashley signed as next of kin. Mary Roberts, wife of Robert Roberts, extx., filed the undated inventory. Richard Frisby and James Wroth became bound for the due administration of the estate of John Ashley, dec., whose widow and admx. married Robert Roberts.(23),(24)

Matthew Beck was his surety; also John Ashley, William Ashley, and Abraham Ashley.(32) At November Court, 1725, Isaac Ashley, St. Paul's Parish, laborer, was charged with stealing one weather(?) worth 10s., property of Honor Hurley. Witnesses: Honor Hurley, George Hanson, Sarah Underhill, Marmaduke Tilden, Thomas Underhill, Elizabeth Canaday, Richard Wilis, George Griffith. On November 16, 1725, it was ordered that Isaac Ashley stand in the pillory for one hour and receive 20 lashes.(33) He died in 1749 Kent County, Maryland (Isaac's estate was appraised on 25 July 1749 by Samuel Groome and Richard Kinnard, and valued at (pounds) 19.15.5. A John Jones and Mary Lankfoord were married Oct 1728; John Jones son of John and Mary Jones was born 21 Feb 1730 in Talbot County Maryland). On 20 October 1743 William gave a deposition regarding the bounds of a tract called Beckworth.(50) He died in 1753 Kent County, Maryland.(51)

He was fined 10 shillings.(57) On 30 April 1767 John Ashley's (son of John and Martha Wroth Ashley) estate was appraised.... William Ashley and John Jones Ashley signed as next of kin. He died in 1773 Kent County, Maryland.(58) On 30 August 1773 Kent County, Maryland, An Inventory of William's estate was taken, Sophia Ashley was the administratix. Next of kin were: Mary Greenfield & Edward Ashley. William must have died before writing a will as one has not been located. Sophia Ashley was on the 1790 Kent Co MD Census with 2 males over 16 years (Aaron & Moses?); she was not found on the 1800 Kent County Census but in the household of Aaron Ashley was a female over 45 years of age (Sophia?). Moses Ashley was also on the 1800 Kent County Maryland census.(59),(60)
a) William4 ASHLEY was born in 1757 Kent County, Maryland.(61) On the 14th of May 1778, in Kent County Maryland, William enlisted in the Revolutionary War and served as a Corporal. In September 1779, upon completing his service, he was honorably discharged in Beaufort, South Carolina.(62) He married Agnes 'Anna' (--?--) in January 1781 South Carolina?(63) In 1800 William and Anna had 1 male and 2 females born bet. 1785-1790, and 4 males and 2 females born bet. 1791-1800 when the 1800 census was taken. There were 2 daughters born between the 1800 and 1810 census, making a total of 6 girls and 5 boys . 3 daughters and 2 sons had married or died between 1800-1810. There were no children in the household in 1820. James Ashley's research shows 8 daughters and 5 sons. There could have been 2 daughters born between 1781-1785 who were married by 1800. He left a will on 7 April 1837 Abbeville, South Carolina.(64) He died on 3 March 1839 Abbeville, South Carolina.(65)

She said that the register of her birth and marriage were in the handwriting of her husband in their family Bible. She died in 1853 Abbeville, South Carolina.

As the men returning helped spread the smallpox, so people were being vaccinated against it. She died of the vaccination and not of the disease. The children were very young, one and three, when she died, probably before their father was killed." Of Masters Ashley 1828 she said, "Uncle Masters Ashley was living near us on Central Avenue when he died, I don't think he had to be in any fighting during the war, he was some kind of a construction regiment, building bridges or something like that." Of Amy Ashley Wadkins she said "Aunt Amy Wadkins was at our house after her husband died. She wrote to the two sons of her husband by a former marriage who remained in Little Rock Arkansas and told them to sell their father's belongings and divide amongst them, that she was going to stay in Alabama. At the final settlement of his estate which was 1/2 of his father's farm (his father had left the farm to him and his brother Aaron), there was no mention of any wife or children.(127) He was born in 1816 Abbeville County, South Carolina.(128) He and Amy (--?--) (his mother) appeared on the census of 1850 Abbeville County, South Carolina (#872). He died in 1852 Abbeville County, South Carolina.(129)
(6) Aaron5 ASHLEY was born in 1822 Abbeville County, South Carolina.(130) He married Sarah J. SHAW circa 1840. May also have had a son named Aaron born 1840. He was found on a list of Confederate Soldiers from Abbeville District who had died during the Civil War.(131) He appeared on the census of 31 August 1860 Due West, Abbeville, South Carolina (p. 245). He died before 1880 Abbeville County, South Carolina (Aaron Ashley not found on any census after 1870. In 1880 his wife [Sarah] and daughter Milcah Rebecca were found to be living in the household of another daughter, Frances Mildred who had married Levi Gilmer born SC 1850).(132)

After the death of her husband Frances moved into the household of her sister Milcah Ashley Burns and lived there until Milcah died in 1897, then with her nephew, James M. Burns until she herself died.(136) She died in 1900 Etowah County, Alabama,, and is buried at Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery in Alford's Bend.

e) Aaron4 ASHLEY Sr was born in 1773 Kent County, Maryland. He appeared on the census of 1800 Kent County, Maryland (1 male age 26-44 (Aaron), 1 female under age 10, 1 female between 16-25, and 1 female over age 45 (his mother Sophia?)). He married Elizabeth HOPKINS on 30 December 1801 Kent, Maryland (nothing is known about Elizabeth Hopkins).(213) On the 8th and 10th of July 1804 a notice was published in the "Republican Star" newpaper: letters remaining at Chestertown Post Office (Kent Co MD) for Aaron Ashley and Moses Ashley. I believe it was probably around this time that they moved to Abbeville County, South Carolina. Both appear on the 1810 Abbeville Co S.C. Census.(214) He married Catherine (--?--) before 1828 South Carolina? (Since Catherine gives her place of birth as South Carolina it is most likly that she and Aaron married in South Carolina. It is not certain if she is the mother of the eldest child (Ebon)). He died on 19 January 1860 Level Land, Abbeville, South Carolina.(215),(216)

In 1863 the three children (not named) of Letty Smith received their deceased mother's share of her father's estate.(225)

(9) Aaron5 ASHLEY Jr was born on 28 August 1828 Abbeville County, South Carolina. He married Amy SHAW, daughter of Robert Washington SHAW and Martha 'Patsy' ASHLEY, in 1855 Abbeville County, South Carolina (or Elbert County Georgia?).(228) Around 1858 Aaron and Amy, along with her parents and other Ashleys, moved to Cherokee County Alabama. On the 7th of October 1862 Aaron enlisted in the Confederate Army. He served as a Private in Company E of the Nineteenth Alabama Regiment. On December 31, 1862 while engaged in battle at Murfreesboro Tennessee, Aaron was wounded in the small of his back by a piece of shell. That following October he guarded prisoners in Atlanta Georgia. On March 30, 1864 Aaron was released from Walker Hospital in Columbus, Georgia (record does not give reason he was hospitalized or for how long). He was honorably discharged from service in April 1865.(229) He appeared on the census of 1870 Etowah County, Alabama. He appeared on the census of 1880 Cherokee County, Alabama (age 52). He appeared on the census of 1900 Cherokee County, Alabama (age 69). He died on 27 October 1906 Cherokee County, Alabama, at age 78, and is buried at Sand Valley Cemetery.
