John MC INTOSH 38 M Inverness,
Rel: Head
Occ: Hawker
Perhaps John was a Hawker and travelled around although this latter bloke seems a couple of years older and this address could be his permanent residence. Marriage status was not shown.
The above list is one page of the Fort George Garrison. This is quite likely given that John was formerly a soldier. I am informed that the garrison of Fort George would have been made up of volunteers at this time - like territorials (see below). The birthplace of Stornaway does not tie in with the information I have from John's army record in the 93rd Regiment. Neither does the occupation of Farm labourer. Also this soldier appears to have jacked his age down a bit (see birth details below). However, apart from the above two Johns, I have eliminated all others in the Highlands. Next stop the Lowlands?

Hello John,
The three men mentioned by you (William, George and John McIntosh) were part of the Highland Rifle Militia; the forerunners of the Territorial Army, really, and there were hundreds of them doing their few weeks training at Fort George. The Head Officer was a captain in the 78th Highlanders and some of his under officers were in the 71st Highland Light Infantry. The Fort was manned by regulars who had their families with them and according to the census return there was a total of 1202, of 1037 males and 165 females.
Cheerio for now,
Donald.
Hello John,
