Mrs. J. L. Jean of this city died at the family home on West Main street Saturday afternoon at 3:10 December 3, on her 68th birthday, following a serious illness since the Sunday previous. She had been in declining health several months. Her husband and six children were at her bedside when the end came, three of the children having come from long distances.
Mrs. Jean was born and reared at Atlanta, this county, and was a member of one of the pioneer families of the county. She had been a member of the M. E. Church many years and was a faithful Christian, beloved wife, mother and neighbor. She was before her marriage Miss Frances Elizabeth Wallace. The family came to Magnolia eleven years ago and Mrs. Jean had made many friends here.
Surviving are her husband, Magnolia merchant; four daughters, Mrs. M. W. Peace, Haynesville, La., Mrs. D. A. Dollarhide, Poolesville, Md, Mrs. Chas C Dobie, Washington City, and Miss Vera Jean, Magnolia; two sons Walker Jean, Atlanta, and Winston Jean, Houston, Texas; two brothers, I. C. Wallace, El Dorado, and Jeff Wallace, Haynesville, La., and eleven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the home Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev J B Luck assisted by Rev. J. A. Sage, in the absence of Mrs. Jean's pastor, Rev O. E. Holmes who was at the bedside of Mrs. Holmes at Texarkana hospital. A touching feature of the service was a voice solo, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought", by Mrs. W. W. Webster of Minden, La., niece of Mrs. Jean. Another selection was a quartet by Miss Jewell Stevens, Mrs. R. O. Mitchell, D. C. Perry, and G. G. Martel, who sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere". Mrs. Luther Beene of Haynesville sang "Face to Face". The scripture selection was part of the 14th chapter of John, read by the minister, who gave a beautiful talk on the life of the deceased. After the services at the home interment followed in the Magnolia cemetery, where Rev Mr. Sage, concluded the services.
