Unverified Information:
(1) Per Aunt Ruthie (Cresseveur) Jacquin, Emil's oldest daughter, as told to me in the
early 1970's.
(A) Emil placed in Saint Peter's Boy
School, an orphanage, on Lyons Avenue, Newark, NJ while Joseph
Cresseveur (father) returned to France. Emil stayed until he was 12 years old (circa
1880), running away twice. Request for a search of records at Saint Peter's resulted in
the reply below which neither proves nor disproves the possibility.
Dear Mr. Cresseveur April 2, 1998
Sister Katherine passed your letter on to me because I am the one in charge of archives. I
searched every possible location, unfortunately though, I was unable to locate any
information on your grandfather, Emil Cresseveur. I am sorry I could not be of help to you
in your ongoing search for family history. Truthfully, based on the records I've recovered
for others in the past, I must tell you that even if I was able to locate any records on
your grandfather, I'm sure that the limited information we would have had would be far
less than that which you've already discovered.
I wish you luck in your continued endeavor.
Sincerely,
Michele D. Squeo, Administrative Asst.
(B) Worked as hatter on Orange Street, Newark, NJ
(C) Had brother, an orphan, possibly from Saint Peter's Orphanage in Newark, NJ.
(D) Had sister in France, possibly a nun in Catholic Church.
(E) Owned truck farm in Newark, also worked in Bloomfield, NJ.
(F) Emil came home extremely upset over
something having to do with Catholic Church and relatives in
France. He took all Catholic artifacts (crosses, pictures, etc.) and threw them into the
street.
Afterwards, all children were baptized as Episcopal (verified).
(1) Per cousin Ruth (Jacquin) Aber,
daughter of Aunt Ruthie as told to me on February 20, 1998:
(A) Emil was intelligent man, speaking seven languages, including Jewish.
(B) Had two cousins in France who were
nuns. Per information Ruth was told by Aunt Ruthie, the cousins
became pregnant by priests in France. Nuns (cousins) wanted to renounce vows and leave
Church. Emil returned to France but was unable to help them. He returned to Newark and
smashed all Catholic artifacts. Eliza Jane was Episcopal and Emil was Catholic. To avoid
conflict, they did not take children to church. Due in part to problems in France,
children were baptized in Episcopal Church.
Speculation on my part:
(1) Joseph Emil's return to France and Emil's placement in orphanage may be associated
with Joseph's return to France to marry second wife Alice. No record has been found of
marriage between them in Newark. If Emil was in orphanage until he was 12 years old (1880)
and Melena Cresseveur died in 1882, Joseph's marriage in France may be the reason.
(2) Religious conflict between Emil and Jennie may have been the reason for baptism of children after his death. Emil died on April 2, 1901, all children baptized on June 27, 1901. Jennie likely waited until Emil's death for baptism of children. Unverified problem in France may have been contributing factor.
