My GG grandfather Edward "Ned" SLAVEN, (c1805-1886), son of miner Edward & Rose Ann SLAVEN/SLEVIN, arrived in Port Jackson, NSW, on the "Mangles" in 1828 as a convict, transported for life. He was listed as a 'waterman' in Dublin, and convicted for street robbery. He was assigned to Jno Dickson and worked as a flour miller in Darling Harbour, Sydney in 1828.
He received his Ticket of Leave in 1836
Bridget CARR, daughter of James CARRand Mary LUDWIDGE, of Ireland, arrived on the 'Duchess of Northumberland' in 1836 as a bounty emigrant.
Bridget and Ned were married on the 26th January 1838, by the well known Father John Joseph Therry at Redbank, NSW.
They ran a small property of 40 acres at Steep Spring, Gullen, together with a local inn known as Slaven's Shanty, notorious for illegally brewed poteen and bushrangers.
In 1869 Ned, Bridget, and sons James and Henry Junot were arrested for the theft of cattle. Only Bridget was found guilty and sentenced to 3 years in Parramatta Womens prison, but it is believed she spent only a short time in there before her release. At that time her husband was very frail.
