The Tully Family has its roots in Ireland, arriving in the U.S. sometime before the year 1855, date of the marriage of Patrick Tully (also born in Ireland about 1826, died in 1872 ) to Mary Reardon (c. 1826 - 1883), in Newark, New Jersey. The Tullys seem to have settled in Newark, and several generations lived in this city: The children of Patrick Tully - Mary Tully (c. 1859 - ?), Peter Tully (c. 1864 - ?), and Francis P. Tully (c. 1862 - ?). A son of Francis Tully and Mary Ryan (born c. 1863 - died ? , married 1887 ), Joseph Tully (1898-1965), was also born in Newark. After Joseph Tully's marriage to Genevieve Slattery (1904-1990) sometime around 1932, the Tully family moved to Monmouth County, New Jersey, probably in the mid to late 1940s.
