Regarding the parents of William SLATTERY (c. 1878 - ? ), census records from 1880 suggest that they may have been William SLATTERY (1850 - ? ) and Hannah SLATTERY ([maiden name unknown] 1850 - ? ), both born in Ireland. William Slattery immigrated to the United States in 1870 and married Hannah in 1873.
Family legend has Amelia SLATTERY's maiden name as BURGARD or a similar form such as Beaurgard, Buregard, or Beuregard, as name which was supposedly changed from Beauregard when the family moved from the South to the North, and ran a brewery in Pennsylvania. The 1880 census records identify an Amelia Burgard, born almost the same time as the Amelia SLATERY of the 1910 census, in Pike County, Pennsylvania. Similarly, a sibling, Christopher BURGARD (c. 1872 - ?), is identified in Pike County, Pennsylvania in 1880 and 1900, but in Newark, New Jersey in 1910. This suggests that at least some of the family immigrated to NJ around 1900 or slightly earlier. Assuming that this is the correct family, we can say that Amelia's mother seems to have been one Elizabeth BURGARD (c. 1830 - before 1910* ) and her father possibly as George BURGARD (b. circa 1829, died after 1910 census). In any case, there are many BURGARDs identified in Pike County, Pennsylvania before 1900 and in Venango County, PA between 1900-1910. All are identified as stone masons or stone cutters.
