In the history of our family, the names PRICE and AMBROSE are forever linked, not just due to marriage, but also due to adoption and a name change that took place in 1918. Upon the death of his mother Mary Elizabeth Burnham (1842-1877), William C. Ambrose (1876-1968) went to live with his grandmother, Elizabeth Price (1819-1901) and her second husband, Skelton Price (1814-1887). His other siblings, Eugene Skelton Ambrose (1871-1933) and his sister Mathiline Ambrose (1874- ? ) may have gone to live with their paternal grandmother, Mary Ambrose (1820-1893). William C. Ambrose's father, William T. Ambrose (1851 - 1920) remarried in 1879 to Phebe Cox (1861-1946), but apparently did not live with them. William C. Ambrose officially changed his name to Price, along with his wife Margaret Ritter (June 1878- January 1947) and son Clarence Warner Price ("C.W.") as all had been going by the name Ambrose for a long time.
In any case, the name AMBROSE is an old one in Maryland, especially in Frederick County (see Patricia Asher's excellent Ambrose Genealogy Page for more about the Frederick County Ambrose family). Our branch of the AMBROSE family seems to have been established in the Baltimore County/City region by 1850, and may or may not derive from the Frederick county branch; at this point there are no identified common ancestors. Visit George Ambrose's Balt. County Ambrose genealogy site.
Like the AMBROSE surname, the name PRICE is also an old one in Maryland, and going back to the settlement of Maryland colony in the 1600s.
