Some researchers do not separate this George Ruff from the George Rugh that had the land grant in 1848. I think that there is too much time elapsed for the same person that had children in 1748 to have had service in the Revolutionary War in 1780. Also this George Ruff in his will stated that he appointed as one of his executors "My dear nephew-John Ruff". I think that this was the son of Christian Ruff and Barbara Yost.

George Ruff lived in the part of Ninety Six District which became Newberry County. His residential plantation (250 acres) was on Crim's Creek; at death he also owned an additional 675 acres. The 1800 federal census listed thirty slaves as part of the Newberry household. During the American Revolution, George served in the militia and supplied provisions for public use. Elected to the House, he represented the Lower District Between Broad and Saluda Rivers. He served various regions in an around Newberry County in the Fourth through the Ninth General Assembly (1782-1791). Other offices he held included justice of peace and county court judge for Newberry County (1785-1792) and delegate for Lower District Between Broad and Saluda Rivers at the state constitutional convention (1790).

An intersting story is attributed to George Ruff. Prior to the Revolution the community of Little Mountain was called Ruff"s Mountain. He reportedly traded Ruff's Mountain for a hiefer calf. When asked why he did so, he responded, "I could eat the calf, but I coundn't eat the mountain". He was born circa 1734 at Germany.2 George Ruff was the son of George Rugh. He married Ann Barbara (?) before 1760. Some researchers report that Ann Barbara's maiden name was Schoepplin..3 George Ruff appeared on the census of 1790 at Newberry County, South Carolina, Christian Ruff, Godsend Ruff and David Ruff were listed on the same census page. George was listed as the head of family on the 1800 Census at Newberry County, South Carolina.4
              George died circa 1803.

Relationship=5th great-grandfather of Joe Frierson Grant.

He came to Philadelphia aboard a ship under the command of Captain Steadman prior to 2 March 1748 with his wife and two minor children. Received a Royal Grant of 200 acres of land on 18 May 1751.(Included in the minutes of Royal Council) His first grant was on Sixteen Mile Creek, on the south side of the Saluda River, and within Saxegotha Township. He later moved north across the Saluda into the Dutch Fork, lived at the foot of Ruff's Mountain (currently called Little Mountain) near Pomaria SC.
In 1750 A George Rouch petitioned the colonial goverment for permission to "return to Germany and bring back over some relatives, and others," for settlement in South Carolina2. Many researchers believe that this is the George Rugh that made application in 1748, but I believe that this is a different person, possible the George Raugh that lived in the South portion of Saxegotha Township.4,3,3

George was born circa 1718 at Germany.
George Rugh Was possibly the son of Johan Rueff of Hesse Germany, and the brother of Daniel, and Johan Sebastion Ruff. This was reported by Martha Thompson, but has not been confirmed. The descendants of Johan Sebastian Ruff settled largely in the Lexington District and commonly signed their name "Roof". I have a large amount of information on this family, but have not included them in this book because of the inability to positively prove the connection (But they are included in the website). I believe that they were originally from the same family and am still trying to prove the connection..5

He was the son of Johann Rueff.5 He married circa 1732 at In Germany.6
George Rugh applied for Land Grant on 2 March 1747/48 at Charleston, Colonial South Carolina.7
