Robert's father, James LEVETT [1615-1680] [IRN 556] lef t h i m Berwick Windmill in Alfriston, Sussex., as it was n ot s ub ject to the Custom of the Manor, it was left to hi s n Ro ber t [1656-1709] [IRN 559]. Robert was the eldest s on of J ames 's second marriage. But on the condition tha t Rober t permi tted his mother to be a partner and to shar e in th e profit s of the mill, so long as she remained a w idow.
Robert worked the mill from 1680 until his death in 17 0 9 . During which time it suffered the vicissitudes of th e w ea ther. On 26 Nov 1703 a terrific storm [akin to our h urri can e in 1987] hit the south of England, causing exten siv e dama ge throughout the area. Salt laden winds cause d th e Downs t o be so impregnated with salt, that the shee p ref used to gr aze for a week afterwards.
It was also reported that "the miller of Berwick , t h ree miles from the sea, whilst attempting with his ma n t o s ecure his mill, was so washed with flashes of sea-w ater , wh ich he represented as beating against them like t he br eakin g of waves against the rocks, that they were fo rced t o giv e over their attempt; and in consequence, th e mill wa s cons iderably damaged."
Following Robert's death, his eldest son James LEV E T T [1683-1765] [] took over as miller.

James father, Robert LEVETT [1656-1709] [559] left him Be r w ick Windmill, Alfriston, Sussex., as he was the eldes t so n . James took over as Miller and during his Tenancy a noth e r storm caused the mill to be blown down, in Januar y 173 5 . James paid for the mill to be re-erected, and i n 1742 h i s son William LEVETT [1722-1777] [IRN 566] was g rante d a 10 0 year lease on the half of acre of land on wh ich th e mil l stood, by Sir Thomas DYKE of Waldron.
Local tradition says that Berwick Windmill was mov e d o r rebuilt. On maps dated 1753 and 1779 the mill sit e i s sli ghtly different, put down to a map makers error
However, the lease of 1742 states that William was gr a n ted "one piece of land containing half an acre parce l o f th e hill commonly called Little HILL, lying near Wic klan ds i n Alfriston, upon which there is lately one windm ill e rrect ed and built at the cost of James LEVETT , th e fathe r of th e said William ".
It does not say that the mill was a re-building, but s u g gests a new building, so perhaps the local tradition i s c or rect.
William LEVETT [1722-1777][IRN 566] took over from h i s f ather as Miller.
